Thomas Mann received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1929, Hermann Hesse in 1946. It goes without saying that I was reading the correspondence of these two eminent writers with great curiosity.

It starts in 1910. Hesse has published in his journal Der März a moderately critical review of Mann’s new novel Royal Highness that seemed to him a bit too harsh afterwards. Therefore Hesse is in a way apologizing to Mann in his very first letter. But Thomas Mann is not

A collection of letters, spanning 45 years (!) of friendship, during the reading of which you feel like you get to know the two writers really well.

Once again, lovely and fascinating to hear the voices of well-known authors without the formality of a piece of work. Thankfully, they talk a lot about their individual works, and works of others- so I have a whole bunch more added to my reading line-up!

at times funny and cute. most of their interaction is very formal and not very in depth, but their discourse over the rise/fall of hitler is revealing enough as to the social landscape they saw themselves as writing in.

Mmh, einige Rezensionen in Englisch, vielleicht von Deutschen geschrieben.
Keine deutschsprachige Rezension, poor Germany.
Was ja eigentlich klar sein müsste, da Thomas Mann gerne in Travemünde Urlaub machte.

Many works, including Siddhartha (1922) and Steppenwolf (1927), of German-born Swiss writer Hermann Hesse concern the struggle of the individual to find wholeness and meaning in life; he won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1946.

Other best-known works of this poet, novelist, and painter include The Glass Bead Game , which, also known as Magister Ludi, explore a search of an individual
