Where the Devil Says Goodnight

--- Forgive me, Father, for I will sin ---

Adam. Catholic priest. Celibate. Does not yield to temptation.
Emil. Sinner. Seducer. Snake. Hot as hell itself.

After a sheltered childhood ruled by religion, all Adam wants is to be a good priest and make his parents proud. But it’s hard to stay virtuous in a big city like Warsaw, and when he makes one slip up, his life spirals into ruin. He is sent to a tiny mountain village where he hopes to live down his shame and work on restraint.

But staying celibate becomes far from easy when he meets Emil, a local man with long dark hair, a mysterious past, and as little morality as he has luck. Emil has no qualms about flirting with a priest. Worse still, he seems hell-bent on tasting forbidden fruit and unearthing the desires Adam has always kept hidden.

The odd village hides secrets far more sinister than Adam's insatiable lust for Emil. Old Slavic magic looms everywhere. Superstition mixes with reality. Someone is watching his every move. Someone follows him in the dark, lurking in the shadows of the ancient forest. Adam is plagued by disturbing events, and Emil could be his only salvation even if he is the devil himself.

Can a priest shepherd the black sheep to safety or has he been the wolf all along?

Oh I hesitate to post a review because I'm still a bit speechless.

I loved the whole story a lot - until the very end when the supernatural resolution kinda caught me off guard and went in a different direction than I thought.

Still, this story has one of the most enthralling settings you could imagine.

Adam, a young Catholic priest needs to relocate to a remote village in rural Poland where he shall get rid of his impure thoughts (aka the gay porn his superior found under his bed).

The village, however, is anything but a reprieve from his struggles. Mysterious hoof beats following him at night, a handsome Satanist atop a jet black horse trying to seduce him and eventually the devil himself crawling down from the church display of Adam and Eve's tree in the garden of Eden to capture the poor priest's body and soul are just a few of the things Adam has to deal with.

description

Still, what I loved most is Emil. The poor guy is followed by a streak of terribly bad luck (and a murder of crows) wherever he goes. I adored him so much and even though he's this strong stubborn alpha male, I just wanted to hug him so bad and wrap him in a warm blanket.

The romance is between Adam and Emil (among other...things...) and it really captured my heart.

I loved the mystery, I loved the atmosphere, I loved the characters. It was like reading a Tim Burton screenplay. As always, the authors are painting with words in their unique style.

What I really couldn't handle was the ending

Yeah that was a bit much.

Still, an impressive book that should not be overlooked!

FANTASTIC!
MYSTERIOUS!
CREEPY!
RIVETING!
SCINTILLATING!

Can you tell I loved this book?

Look at that cover!! This devilish tale delivers that and more!

We are in Poland, in the now.
We are in the mountains, full of the yesterday.
Full of superstitions and old gods.
Full of small minds and petty grievances.
Full of mystery.

This is were our MC’s meet.
One is a rebel plagued by bad luck.
The other is a priest seeking to bury parts of himself.

The instant connection is electric—but what drives it?
What will happen in a relationship between a priest and a man in a small town that loves nothing more than to gossip? Can there even be an HFN?

I loved this paranormal mystery! I was always waiting for SOMETHING to happen next—and it always did! The tension Merikan created in the action made me white-knuckle my kindle. The heat between the two men made me take *ahem* breaks.

This is my favorite book I’ve read all year!

You will LOVE Emil, the Rebel, and you will want to strangle Adam, the priest. You may even dislike Adam, but hold on until the end...there is logic to this paranormal puzzle!

My rec? Hell, yes! (Literally and metaphorically).

This was a bonkers, gorgeous, captivating, spooky read.

I loved the folklore, the setting, the …everything.

Merikan is already phenomenal at descriptions and vivid imagery, but they really outdid themselves in this book. Some of the most creative wording I've ever read:

His mouth watered, and he knew that if he bit in, he’d taste roast pork with apricots and nuts, covered by the most divine crunchy skin.

Truly a gay bbq.

Especially with the way it all tied in together…! There were tie ins I could see, and then ones I didn’t even know I missed until I’d finished the book.

Despite involving a Catholic priest, this doesn’t feature heavily on the religious side. It’s more about folklore and superstition, so there’s no off putting modern religion presence. The overall vibes are Old Country and wow, what a vibe. Not that I really know what I’m talking about, but the contrast of rigid religion and primal folklore…so good.

The ending. I could never have seen that coming, or how the HEA is pulled off, but it works so well.

MM Romance
Paranormal Folklore
4 Stars ⭐️

🎵Narrated by Wyatt Baker🎵 New to me and while I wasn’t feeling him at the start because he reminded me of Alexander Cendese, he grew on me as time went on and I loved his accents. The voice he did for the paranormal part of this book was seriously spooky. I was listening to this late at night, home alone, cat sitting at my parent’s house and when the voice came through, it scared me! Super creepy but perfect for this time of year.

I had given up trying to find a KA Merikan book I liked besides Jack Addison but then I read Dickhead earlier in the year and fell in love with Dex and Hammer much to my surprise. This made me want to try more of their books but I’m just not into biker clubs or mafia romances so I thought I’d try out their paranormal stuff and I lucked out with this one. I was hooked from the first page and had the hardest time putting this down to go to bed at night. This entire book was bonkers in the best way because half the time I had no idea what the hell was actually happening. Everything was so mysterious and odd in this little polish town and it gave it this creepy overall vibe that just thrilled me because it was so unlike anything else that I’ve read. It was also quite taboo since Adam is a gay priest so that was a huge plus.

I don’t want to write too much because this is great due to the mysterious vibe it has but I really adored Emil and Adam and their connection. It was obvious from their first meeting that there was something between them and they couldn’t stay away from each other even though Adam tried his hardest to avoid the temptation. It was futile though because these two were destined. There was just so much in this book that I liked and the folklore was easy enough to understand once everything was explained. It’s one of those books that when you finally get answers, the weird things just fit into place and make perfect sense.

However, this is 120k words and I felt it dragged in some places. Adam’s a priest so obviously he goes through an identity crisis but his back and forth gave me whiplash at times and I just wish that he would have given in sooner. It also mentions in the blurb that this is high heat but because Adam spends so much time fighting against his nature, it wasn’t as steamy as I would have liked. I just would have preferred a few more sex scenes but I did love how Emil waited patiently for Adam to be comfortable after what happened the first time.

Also, TW for death of an animal. This has to do with part of the main storyline but it gutted me a bit to have it happen at all and I don’t see it in the warnings on this blurb. Maybe it’s there on the written version but the audiobook didn’t say either. I would have preferred a heads up so just putting it out there.

Ominous. Slow Burn. Intimate

Written by: K.A. Merikan
Narrated by: Wyatt Baker

Overall:5 stars
Performance:5 stars
Story:5 stars

Just finished reading/listening Where the Devil Says Goodnight and at loss for words.

I should begin saying , this is a very unconventional story . It is also provocative, creepy, darkish, intimate, emotional, slow burn, mystical , hot AF and utterly entertaining.

Set , in a small town ,in a valley, by the edge of a forest , deep in the Carpathian Mountains in Romania. It has an extraordinary and fascinating world building around Slavic superstition, myth, folklore, paganism, old deities, demons , magic and cults.

Where the Devil Says Goodnight kept me on edge and guessing the entire time. Began reading it late at night , so of course, was imaging I heard a noise , then floorboards creaking, followed by something breathing down my neck; get the picture? I freaked myself out. 😁😀😂 So yep , it's a spooky , intriguing, spellbinding and thoroughly enjoyable book.

Adam and Emil, the heroes , are great characters. They fought hard to be together. And I absolutely love their unique brand of HEA .

Will re-read: Yes
Recommend: Yes

DNF!!!!!!

I DNF this book at 35% and I DO NOT RECOMMEND!!!!

If you scroll through my GR it’ll be obvious that I have a taste for dark and peculiar books. I love pushing my boundaries and delving into the unknown when it comes to books.

With that being said this book is definitely not for me. I’m sorry but at some point even I had to step back and reevaluate when I was reading this. I fuck around with a lot of weird shit while reading but when it comes to Pagan and Satanism Folklores that’s where I draw the MF line!!!

This book made me very fucking uncomfortable. Any romance the two characters may have been developing took back stage to the demonic possessions and occultism going on here.

There was no chemistry at all between the two characters and the supporting characters were bland. I’m sorry but those of you giving this book 5
Stars are fucking crazy. I read your reviews and so many of them you guys rec an ARC for your " honest” review so I’m pretty sure y’all are being fake as fuck because there is NO WAY this book deserves 5 stars.

It took me more than a month to read this book, but I did overall enjoy it. As in loved several of themes in the plot, while equally struggled with others.

Pros: Very refreshing to read a story set in Poland, Europe by authors from that very region. I want more European authors' books! The setting and world details worked like a charm; from learning about Kupala Night (surprisingly similar to Swedish Midsummer celebrations), sudden want to sample Babka bread, and to travel to the Bieszczady mountains to take in the views.

Cons: The romance. Although I liked the characters' background stories, once they met I couldn't feel much attraction or UST between the two. The steamy scenes held zero steam for me. I found my disinterest in the romance surprising, as the only other title I've read by the authors had the opposite appeal to me; there the sexual attraction was great but the story and character growth lacking. So very odd to find it flipped here.

If I could change only one thing it would be to cut many of the introspective moments, as I found them getting in the way of scene progressions. Can I also say the cover art with the animal skull is absolutely gorgeous? It fits the story so well.

OK that took a lot to get to a point that I enjoyed. I REALLY loved the last 25% but the first 75% was a miss. I'm giving it 3 stars and I feel like that is pretty generous but I've liked this duo before.

It got clearer, things were explained, and I started caring more about the two MC's by that 75% time. However, the writing is awkward to me - feels oddly formal at times (the authors address that a bit in the beginning but that alone does not explain it to me). I thought the narrator was ok - but not my fave performance. He got better as he went.

Original ThoughtsUmmm. I clearly am not listening to what other people read. I am really struggling - I don't like either character and am not feeling any chemistry between them. It feels very uneven - I'm spending a lot of time not being sure what I'm listening too. I'm about 35% in and I'm just not feeling it. Not the occult parts - if you read my reviews you know I like dark (in fact I like the darkest of dark!) but this just feels a bit like a convoluted mess at this point. I don't do much updating on status or early reviews but I had to come and read the other reviews and so many of my friends loved this. I guess I'm odd woman out on this one. I'm going to finish as it for a challenge. The audiobook narrator can get quite "screaming" in tone of voice which I don't love. I do like the way he does the voices though. But that literally sort of screaming. No.

Most of the books of this author duo I really like - so this may be a one off. Disclaimer: I didn't get an ARC or review copy - I paid a credit for this on audible so full price.

Sigh, I dislike writing negative reviews.
I didn't enjoy Where the Devil Says Goodnight for many reasons.
The most important one being an unlikable character.
I need to connect, understand and love the characters who's love journey I get to take part in.
I disliked Father Adam with every fiber of my being.
His ability to easily lie and feel no remorse.
His hypocrisy.
His audacity to place blame Emil for his own desires.
His ability to give Emil hope only to take it away at every turn.

There is something to be said for morally ambiguous characters and for the most part I enjoy them because they always have a redeemable quality. Father Adam had no redeemable quality.

It didn't help that he's paired with Emil who is the brunt of so much bad luck and negativity. Emil keeps getting beaten down, over and over and over again throughout the story.
It was depressing.

It's hard to love a romance story if I can't believe in the romance and the compatibility of the characters.

On a positive note

The cover is everything.
The premise of the story is very imaginative and entertaining.

Fantastic! What a story.
K.A. Merikan's Where the Devil Says Goodnight is one incredible journey, and I enjoyed every last bit of it.

Wyatt Baker does a stupendous job bringing these amazing characters to life... the voices, the accents, the special effects - it's all quite an experience. Definitely go with audio for this one.

That last part was fucking weird. I actually surprisingly liked this book though. The sex scenes were awesome and their love was shown so passionately. It was a bit scary not gonna lie and I haven't hated any characters more than I hate those four sorry excuses for humans. But it was good.

Y'all. I put extra effort into this review. *pats self on back*

Also, I just want to say that K&A have this way of always poking and pushing at boundaries I don’t even know I have sometimes. And I love it. It’s not always a slam dunk for me, but I admire and appreciate their talent.

"And for no reason at all, he was sure their kisses would taste of raspberries and blood."

I loved so much about this book. It’s incredibly atmospheric at times. You just feel like you’re in this other place that’s at times so incredibly beautiful (e.g., the secret place in the forest scene: "With the fern flower burning close by, surrounded by the floating fireflies, and overlooked by the stars, they existed beyond time, and he wanted to believe that they would never have to leave the safety of their green cocoon." ) and at others terribly tragic (basically, everything that happens to Emil).

"They didn’t know each other, they barely spoke, but when Adam looked into his eyes, it felt like he saw Emil, not Old Słowikowa’s grandson, not a black sheep, or the resident metalhead Satanist, but the person he was. And in the brief moments they’d shared, Emil didn’t feel so alone."

Ugh, I felt so much for Emil. This outwardly strong tough man, who really is just a sweet guy who’s been dealt a shit hand. He is repeatedly beaten down again and again. The amount of times I was asking myself WTAF is going on in this town. It was a lot. Many times.

"It was so rare that someone took care of Emil that his toes curled with the simple pleasure of someone offering him help."

Then, on the other hand, you have Adam, who’s just constantly fighting this internal struggle with who he is and what he truly desires. I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about a book with a priest MC, but it worked for me here.

"Emil had been a ray of hope in a world of bleak rules, the trigger that allowed Adam to open his wings for the first time."

As a GR friend pointed out in his review (hi Dan), the pacing does get a bit wonky in the middle. There is definitely a bit of a lull.

I also wouldn’t have minded a bit more exploration/investigation/understanding of the magic and folklore surrounding Emil, his grandma, Adam, Chort and the Forest, as I personally found that one of the most intriguing aspects of the book.

"He didn’t need to rein in his instincts or feel guilt over loving the wrong person, because nature made no mistakes."

Loved it.

Genre: Dark Paranormal Romance
Type: Standalone Book 1 from Folk Lore Series
POV: Third Person
Rating:
(4.25 stars)

Throughout his life, all Adam Kwiatkowski wanted was to serve his God and make his parents proud. As a young priest, he was heading in the right direction until an indiscretion led him to be transferred to a remote village. What supposed to be helping him avoiding temptations turned out to be a complete opposite when the village’s black sheep, Emil Slowik walked into his life.

I liked both of the main characters. Adam’s reluctance to accept his true self was both amusing and frustrating. Emil had such a hard an unfortunate life it was hard not to feel for him.

For so many years, Adam had struggled with desires he didn’t dare speak of, but Emil had seen right through him and used that knowledge to unsettle Adam’s spiritual equilibrium as if it were a game.

This story was intriguing with its mix of religion, Slavic folklore, and paranormal/horror. I loved the mysterious and eerie ambiance, the fascinating festivals, and supernatural creatures. The book started great, but it was long and slow in the middle. Thankfully it ended weirdly wonderful.

Where the Devil Says Goodnight is a tale of embracing oneself. It would appeal to readers who enjoy a taboo paranormal romance.

Where the Devil Says Goodnight was so freaking good!!! Oh man I don't even know where to begin!

Where the Devil Says Goodnight is a romantic yet haunting story that left me uneasy the entire time. I wasn't sure how this tale was going to end but man I was not expecting that ending.

The one frustrating part of Where the Devil Says Goodnight is Adam. You'll want to bitch slap him once or twice but I could still see where he was coming from. Emil ugh that man deserved the freaking world!

All in all, K.A. Merikan crafted a hauntingly romantic tale that will leave you on the edge of your seat till the very end!

That was one weird but strangely enjoyable read. Usually any mention of religious themes in my books puts me off immediately, but I’d decided to give this one a chance and somehow, it didn’t happen here. I simply couldn’t take any of this catholic bullshit seriously and found it funny in a sarcastic way instead. Possibly I was just in a state and it’ll continue to piss me off in the future, so this book came around at just the right time. Anyway, I liked it way more than my previous read from this authors. The writing style could still use some more honing, but it’s better.

The blurb was a bit messy, so I was really surprised how fun this actually was. The fact the authors are Polish (I’d had no idea before) added a new level of authenticity to the story. It very realistically depicted the intolerance and religious fanaticism so often found in Polish people. Despite not ever being to Bieszczady myself, it was easy to immerse myself in the folklore characteristic of tiny mountain villages. The plot was engaging and not very predictable, so that’s another plus.

I liked both MCs, Emil more so, but that’s a given - any priest, no matter how pretty and corruptible, would have a hard time becoming my favorite character. I warmed up to him after he was possessed, though, and the big reveal at the very end helped, too. The sex was pretty hot, and nicely doled out - Adam being all tangled up inside was scrumptious.

I generally adore Merikan's bonkers brand of dark romance but this one maybe took the cake. Emil as the down on his luck metalhead, the black sheep of the nosy village, was one of my favorite characters they've written. The core relationship felt so sweet and exploratory, even with Adam's priestly internalized homophobia, and the setting and supernatural elements were interwoven perfectly. I was on the edge of my seat, often gripped by the spooky vibes, and could predict exactly zero of the plot lines. I could also really feel the strong connection to the Polish folklore of the authors' homeland and their tone of voice worked particularly well with the setting. It was a tumultuous ride from start to finish with gorgeous natural imagery and absolutely jaw dropping climaxes that you only find in a Merikan. Such fun.

I really wasn’t super impressed, Adam doubted himself and thought his feelings were bad. Yes, he was a new Priest but he went into the house of God thinking he could get rid of those thoughts and feelings if he choose to be a priest.
Emil I felt so bad for, he got nothing but crap from the whole town who wanted so much from him. Even Adam started believing the worst of him. 😡
It dragged out to long for me and I felt myself getting frustrated with the whole thing.

Adam Kwiatowski is a young priest censured to a small country village parsonage. Though Adam fought his internal desires for many years, the temptation intensifies when longstanding folklore and deeply repressed needs emerge. Over the years, Emil Słowik experienced a slew of bad luck and continues to be the target of prejudice. But as a new priest arrives, Emil slowly begins to believe in hope and an opportunity for change.

“Who would have thought the chaste priest is such a slut in private?”

Told in dual POV, the story begins with how pagan beliefs affects the lives of Adam and Emil. Delving into each of their characters, it becomes clear as to what drives each and where their vulnerabilities lie. Together they find a mutual connection, yet when insecurities plague Adam, he is forced to confront the demon he’s been refusing. As for Emil, his nature is to sacrifice for others, but it can cost him everything.

“I don’t know what it is, but from that night when I met you, I could sense… you were meant for me. As if we were supposed to meet.”

In this book, I enjoyed how the fantasy theme effectively sets an eerie tone as the unknown mingles with superstition. Though their personalities and struggles are so different, I liked Emil and Adam equally. With Emil, he is sex on a stick with his long dark hair and effortless sexuality. I felt for him throughout and wondered how much more he could tolerate. While Adam initially appears to be saintly compared to Emil, I liked the conflict he had to face and how much hotness it added to the forbidden. As the plot evolves, all the elements come together in an enticing way.

Where the Devil Says Goodnight is a MM fantasy romance sure to allure with its steam and imagination.

⭐︎3.25 stars rounded down!⭐︎

Hm, I wanted to love this, I really did.

And overall, I liked it quite a bit. I loved Emil, who was just a guy who was a victim of circumstance (and not getting a choice at all in the way his life went, THANKS grandma😠) and was different and so looked at as bad and wrong and a freaking satanist to boot.

But really he was just a gay man who liked tattoos and metal music and long hair and so looked down upon, and isolated for it. His whole life he's had some pretty shitty luck, and thus can barely get by and thus can't get out of the shit hole town he grew up in, where the townsfolk treat him like dirt.

He was the best part of this book. Really, he gets put through so much shit, and yet he's still kind and sweet and a better person than any of the other villagers will be.

Now, I didn't love Adam, but overall I did like him. I understood his POV and his troubles and why it was so hard for him to let go of the prejudice and homophobic world he grew up in, that told him repeatedly that liking men was a sin, sin, sin.

I understood his push and pull. But what I didn't like was near the end, and the quick AF turn he took to believing the worst of Emil and not trusting him when he's done nothing to suggest he wasn't what he appeared to be. And then he went on believing several other people who have shown to be pretty shitty people themselves, but oh yeah sure, what they say conveniently lines up with Adam's worries and he latches onto them, and then is a total shit head to Emil.

I guess the only reason I forgived him is the same reason Emil did, which is what he did for him at the end of the story. How he

So yeah, Adam really frustrated me at that point, but he made up for it.

Their romance overall was good. This wasn't as steamy as I was hoping, although what we did get was good enough. Although

Anyway, all those things above were overall good, even with Adam's ups and downs and taking so long to give in and such....

But my main problems were, well, the big one being how slow this was.

I think it didn't help that for a lot of this, not much actually happens. Not in the paranormal part of this, anyway. There might have been a part here or there, little bitty parts of it, and there is one big part before it slows down again, but overall there wasn't...much of the paranormal aspect until the last part of this.

It made this so slow. As evidenced by it taking me about 5 days just to get the 75%ish down, and then I was able to finish about the last 20-25% last night, because then shit starts happening.

I also wanted more of their "illicit affair" as it were. I wanted them to give in and be doing it all over the place. But instead after the first time where , but then Adam pulls back and then when he gives in again, they aren't having full on sex, just masturbating together, really.

Also they were supposed to be trying to figure out what was going on in the town and with what happened to Adam and all that, but aside from a first look in Emil's attic, they don't really do any research/trying to find out what's going on after that. I thought it was gonna be this big plot point and then it kinda...wasn't.

Or if it was, we didn't get to see it, because two times, about two months of time is skipped in this book. Just big chunks where it's like "it's not August and they've been doing so and so for 2 months" and then some action happened and then it was all the sudden two more months later, and the main thing Adam and Emil were doing was working on a project so Emil could sell what he makes and make money.

All the things weren't explained until the very end. We didn't get like increments of knowledge as the story progressed, we just kinda got crumbs until at the end when we get the whole pie. I think the information should have been revealed at several parts to start giving us a picture of what was going on until the big reveal - especially when these two were supposed to be researching what was going on.

Also while I am happy these two got their HEA in a way, I had two small questions at the end, which were .

So overall, there were positives to this book, and I did like parts of it, and I loved Emil and liked Adam, and I did enjoy their romance overall, but it was just too slow and was a slog to get through at times. I wanted more to happen before the last chunk of the book.

So overall, not the best I've read by these two ladies, but still likable overall. I'd say it's up to you whether you read this or not. There's the good of this story, but also the "meh" or bad of it, so it's really up to you.

Onto the next!

This was an interesting read. I have read one other book by this author Laurent and the Beast which I didn't really like, I assumed it was due to my distaste for Motorcycle club romance but after reading this book I think I just don't like her writing.

I didn't even have a problem with the occultism that featured heavily in this book. It was just dull. The romance between Adam and Emil went no where and the end left A LOT to be desired. I just didn't like it. I thought I was going to read about a Priest getting all hot and heavy while fighting against his urges and I ended up disappointed.

I loved everything about this book.
The theme. The setting (I'm Polish, sue me). The story. The smut.
Added to my favourite authors immediately.

I just can’t get into this book. The way that the non-consensual demon possessed sex really makes it feel like homosexuality is a sin indefinitely is really not for me. I also can’t get into Adam. I understand his religious background and the way that he is internalizing this homosexuality and making it a sin himself, but the way the author portrayed it with the actual demon possession is not for me. I have a few other books by this author on my TBR, but if this is how they write gay romance, I don’t think they are for me, but I will give them another try. I read a few of the spoiler reviews because I do not mind being spoiled, especially when I’m on the fence for a book. After reading those I am sure this is not the book for me and I cannot continue it for my own sanity. I feel bad for a meal in this book and I liked him as a character, but the combination with him and Adam and the entire town is just not sitting right with me and the way that it all ends according to the spoiler is just not it so it was a good try and I spent money and the author got paid, but it’s a no for me.
