Teaching Science to English Learners is a go-to resource for science educators to promote listening, speaking, reading, and writing in their classrooms. Each chapter outlines specific, easy-to implement that foster academic language development and comprehension of science concepts, with specific scaffolds highlighted for each language proficiency level. The second in a set of books designed to help content-area teachers create learning environments in which English learners thrive.
My school purchased this book for each grade level. It has some good strategies and ways to include the different language objectives into a lesson. The book is very short and a quick read for you busy teachers. EL strategies are not just for EL students. As the author points out:
...teachers who take the time to embed support for ELs into their lessons facilitate increased content comprehension and vocabulary retention for all students.
As some of you may know I'm a science teacher and one of the things I admittedly struggle with is teaching content to my English Learners.
I just finished this read and I am so excited to apply the things I have learned to my classroom, especially when we go back in person. It has a lot of great suggestions that will not only help me English Learners but all my students.🌞🌞🌞🌞 (4.5/5)
