Christina 'CEE BEE' Bauer thinks that fantasy books are like bacon: they just make life better. All of which is why she writes young adult romance novels that feature demons, dragons, wizards, witches, elves, elementals, and a bunch of random stuff that she brainstorms while riding the Boston T. Oh, and she includes lots of humor and kick-ass chicks, too. Christina lives in Newton, MA with her husband, son, and semi-insane golden retriever, Ruby. Magicorum Box Set contains the first novels of the Magicorum series by Christina Bauer. The original books included were released from 2017-2021, this reformat and re-release 4th Nov 2021 is 1,220 pages and is available in ebook format.
These are well written and engaging action driven YA/NA paranormal romance novels. The narrative is written in dual first person alternating chapters between two of the main characters Knox (a shifter and alpha) and Bryar Rose (female protagonist and general snarky badass 18 year old).
The books are full of fractured fairy tale archetypes and riffs on classic fairy tales. The happily-ever-afters are not easy to attain and there's a metric ton of crisis and drama and tortured teenage angst and longing between the start and finish.
I'm about 4 decades outside the target audience (older teens and YA), but I am confident that they'll be gobbled up by the readers for whom they're intended. There is a little bit of rough language, but nothing which would raise an eyebrow in the average school hallway. There is also a fair bit of nudity, since lead love-interest Knox is a shifter and they do a lot of clothes shredding, so there's some discussion of his "junk".
The dialogue is sometimes eye-wateringly sarcastic, but again, for readers in the target audience, that will likely be a plus and not at all negative. This would be a good series to binge, since book 8 has just dropped. For fans of Twilight, Marissa Meyer's Lunar Chronicles, and similar, these books will fit the bill.
Four stars for this collection. The individual books for me range in the three and a half to four star range. Likely higher for the target audience.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
Like fairy dust, familiar fairy tales slide into an even more exciting world of magic, shifters, fae, dragons and so much more.
This box set includes two novels and one novella, each one surrounding the adventures of Bryar Rose and her friends. Bryar Rose starts out as a pretty normal girl, except for the fact that she's has a Sleeping Beauty Template, which is faulty. Since she's not allowed to attend a usual school, she's stuck in a support group for cases similar to hers. But secrets abound, and soon she winds up in a much bigger conspiracy to take destroy magic. Mix in her best friend, a Cinderella Template, who's a thief and con-artists, and two very hot guys, who pack amazing powers, and boredom stays far away.
This story drew me in even more than I thought it might, and I found myself not wanting to put the books down...which is really not wonderful considering how long it takes to read 700 + pages. Bryar Rose has a few rough edges to her personality, but it slides in nicely with who she is and her past. The friends surrounding her are gems. Each holds their own quirks, guaranteeing more than a couple slightly humorous scenes. It's this sense of humor which balances out the action...and there is ton of action. Bad guys abound, but all aren't what they seem. In the world of magic, anything is possible and does happen. It's an exciting read for fans of strong heroines, friendship, magic, action and a slight bit of fairy tale thrown in.
I received a complimentary copy and enjoyed every minute even more than I thought I would. So, I'm leaving my honest thoughts.
Wolves and roses I really enjoyed this story. All supernatural creatures follow a fairy tale template. But Bry and her best friend don't exactly follow their template thus putting them in a special therapy group. Things aren't always what they seem though, and the girls are in the middle of some big trouble. Really liked how Bry is no damsel in destress and handles a lot of things we snappy wit.
Moonlight and midtown I love the inner wolf dialogue! Poor Bry is getting stressed out about trying to control her wolf and getting ready to start a regular school. So, Elle tries to take her shopping in some fairy stores with some really bad results. The wolves are also pressuring Knox to become their alpha adding to their worries. This story has some fast-paced hijinks and shows the girls quick thinking.
Shifters and Glyphs I read this story in the set and really enjoyed it. Bry is struggling with the stress of trying to start a regular school and some horrible nightmares she can't remember. Magic isn't done with her yet and she has to choose between protecting her friends or protecting the world. I love the colorful characters and twists in fairy tale templates. There’re some twists I didn't see coming and the series stays older YA all the way through.
Magicorum Box Set 1-3 by Christina Bauer. WOLVES AND ROSES (Book 1) Bryar Rose is supposed to live by a fairy tale life template: sleeping beauty. So why does she dream of ancient Egypt and a handsome young werewolf?
MOONLIGHT AND MIDTOWN (Book 2) Bryar Rose and her bestie Elle (never call her Cinderella) go shopping in hidden Manhattan stores run by faeries. Mayhem ensues.
SHIFTERS AND GLYPHS (Book 3) Bryar Rose discovers the secret behind her connection to the pyramids of ancient Egypt ... and to the heart of a certain werewolf. I really enjoyed this book. It was different. Great story and characters. 5*.
There are some good points to this series and some bad points. The good points is that I liked the characters and how they were from popular faiytales with new plots. I liked the storylines and I found the storyline gripping and read each book quickly. However, the writing style takes a lot of getting used too and there are so many mistakes in the book that it is hard to imagine that this book was ever properly edited. Unfortunately this really distracted from the story and the quality of the book so it ruined the experience, without these mentioned issues I would have been scoring this set higher.
I love these books and I'm so excited to see a box set available. I will always jump at the chance to read any magicorum sets and if you're interested in fairytale retellings this is definitely the right pick for you!
