Kathleen Weidner Zoehfeld is the award-winning author of more than sixty books for children, including DINOSAUR TRACKS, "a great choice for even the most discriminating dinophiles" (School Library Journal); DID DINOSAURS HAVE FEATHERS?, a Children's Book of the Month Club selection, described as "fascinating" by Kirkus Reviews; and DINOSAURS BIG AND SMALL, a 2003 Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Best Book Award winner.
When she's not reading, researching, writing, or editing, Kathleen loves to spend her free time exploring, doing fieldwork, and preparing fossils for her local natural history museums.
"In the sage green and dusty hues of the prairie, [the painting] showed a herd of exuberant wild horses charging across an open range under a glittering blue sky" (Zoehfeld 2). Katy McLaughlin longs to be back on her ranch in Wyoming, galloping over the hills with the horses she adores. However, as she sits daydreaming in school, she could never have imagined that her father would one day, after deeming it too dangerous, force her to sell the magnificent horse of her dreams, which horse she would soon meet and tame. Flicka: The Movie Novel is a story of how a teenage cowgirl, Katy McLaughlin, struggles to create a relationship of mutual understanding with her father, to tame the black stallion of her dreams, and to help her brother muster the courage to leave the ranch and go to college. Although this book is fairly short and somewhat juvenile, it grabbed my attention from the very beginning, particularly because I have a fascination with horses. The author uses beautiful imagery in some places, and the book flows fairly well; therefore, I would say that overall, this is a mediocre book with an intriguing storyline. Nevertheless, it is a short, fun, easy read that I thoroughly enjoyed. This book has a nice balance of suspense, romance, and passion that is light-hearted and entertaining. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a simple, quick read, which they could share with a child, if so desired.
I really really love this book! I really also loved the movies so I figured I would try to find the book and read it. I also really love horses so this book/movie is so great. 💓
I really like this book because it talks about a girl who falls inlowve with a horse and her dad sells it and she scemes with her brother and his feancey to get her back.

This book is a heart warming story about Katy a free spirited girl and her special bond with Flicka, a black stallion that is too wild for anyone to train. Katy is the one person Flicka trusts and their love for one another builds throughout the book. Katy and Flicka in the end both face challenges, but come out stronger than before and together.
