This review first published on Oh Just Books.

The Other Magic is book one of the epic fantasy series Passage to Dawn. I'll be honest, I haven't read any epic fantasy books in the longest time, and this book was such a welcome surprise. At 600+ pages, it isn't a small book by any means, but it's just what I needed. The feeling of being able to immerse yourself in a book universe for days on end (and often late into the night) is a feeling I haven't experienced in a while.

The challenge with epic

As far as first books go, this was among the best I have read. Smythe was able to effortlessly capture all the elements of a truly great epic fantasy. For me, the most impressive thing was how he was able to present such an expansive world while still providing the perfect amount of detail into his societies and political systems. I never once felt like I was sitting through a history lesson of a world, nor was I overloaded with innocuous detail of the current scene (my two biggest issues with ...more

‘The Other Magic (Passage to Dawn Book 1)’ is the debut novel of Derrick Smythe’s high fantasy adventure series. Told through the eyes of two young protagonists; one born to royalty, the other to poverty. Aynward is a highborn arrogant prince, sent to a strange land to be schooled in the art of humility. Kibure is a naive slave, with childlike fear and curiosity of his new found supernatural powers. It is a tale of two boys divided by social status and distant locals, brought together by the ...more

Mr. Smythe's debut novel is a captivating adventure situated in a rich fantasy world with multiple POV characters. Kibure is a slave boy who feels his magic powers blossom; Sindri is an outcast priestess with her own agenda who finds and guides him; Grobennar is a middle-aged priest who raised the promised God Emperor (read: dark lord) since his birth/hatching and is trying hard to guide the monster he unleashed; and, last but best, Aynward is a sanguine prankster / princeling from a small ...more

My favorite thing about this book is the characters. I felt a good connection with them early on as I found multiple chances to see the two young men as foils to each other. Rich vs poor, royalty vs slave, naive vs worldly, arrogant vs benevolent. They play so well against each other. Smythe uses actions to drive his characterization… vivid scenes that really open the readers to the type of characters we’re dealing with.

I also really liked the magic system. The educated clerics are the only

Although this type of genre is not my usual go -to -reading ,this book kept my interest as I learned more about the world Derrick Smythe created between the haves and the have nots. Kibure is a slave boy with vision and a power he doesn't fully realize until he is under the scrutiny of those in power. Aynward, a spoiled royal teenage boy, learns lessons of what his wealth and money cannot buy. Mr. Smythe weaves a tale on the grandest scale of power, greed and magic. The story is an old one but ...more

This has what every epic fantasy tale needs.

Megalomaniac so-called god king, Kick-arse disgraced priestess, Heroic but clueless good guys, slave boy of unknown heritage with magical powers, Scheming wizard and scammers.

These fascinating characters are all married together with an engaging tale of action and adventure. Their lives intricately entwined that eventually sees them colliding

Have to congratulate Derrick for his first novel, it holds your attention and I personally can't wait to read

Looking forward to this series!

I like the many story lines and and how well this author, Derrick Smythe, keeps them from tangles!
I've read books with similar story lines but I would usually need to go back to the story's origin to figure them out. Not this novel, though. Remarksble, really.

Derrick Smythe's debut novel is full of adventure, danger, and fun. Kibure, a runaway slave boy is chased by the minions of a an evil ruler who, for his own reasons, is afraid of Kibure. Meanwhile, a spoiled prince is sent to a school where he is supposed to be reformed but ends up as a part of something much bigger. A promising new author: if you like epic fantasy, check this out.
