Christmas at Whitefriars by Elizabeth Camden is about a crumbling Castle in Yorkshire, England in 1912.
Elizabeth Camden is a favorite author writing in my favorite genre.
This was an enjoyable trip back into the first part of the 20th Century when Americans wanted to invest in English culture.
Mary Beckwith has stayed in England to oversee the family estate while her brother, Colin from Ms. Camden’s Empire State series, has married a girl from America. Christmas brings the siblings and a f

"It can be frightening to step out into something new. I've been knocked down, but then comes the time to crawl back up onto your feet, start walking, then running, and don't stop until you get where you need to be."

Elizabeth Camden masterfully weaves history, especially the lesser known history, with beautifully crafted fiction in all of her books and this novella is another clear example of her superb storytelling that will draw you into the heart of 1912 Yorkshire, England. Fans o

From the castle renovations (both those completed and those on the list) to the food to the wonderful characters, Christmas at Whitefriars is the perfect gift for fans of Elizabeth Camden.
Catch up with some fictional friends from Camden’s Empire State trilogy while spending time at the castle made famous from gourmet food labels.

Mary and Everett are opposites in so many ways but they quickly grow to appreciate them in each other. Kindhearted Mary loves her quiet country home an

Wonderfully descriptive, this Christmas novella is just what your holiday season needs. When family and friends join together to celebrate, the family business must be addressed, making this holiday memorable. In addition, at this estate all the characters are quite the characters! Between these unique characters and the setting, Camden creates an atmosphere that makes me want to visit the Whitefriars estate. Of course, the author’s romantic scenes make me smile. Although this holiday romance is ...more

Mary Beckwith is trying to renovate Whitefriars castle, her childhood home. It’s a huge undertaking and she is trying to do it on her own with occasional advice and yearly allowance from American businessman Everett Wooten. The funding never seems to be enough and Mary plans to rent out rooms to earn extra money. She is working hard to get the rooms ready for the paying guests. Going through mail, she discovers that Mr Wooten is in York, an hour’s carriage ride from the castle, waiting to speak ...more

A Historical Christmas novella that you don't want to miss! Author Elizabeth Camden has long been a favorite author of mine, she is a master story-teller and I especially love her ability to make obscure history come alive.

If you've read Elizabeth Camden's Empire State Series, you will enjoy cameo appearances by some of the beloved characters from those stories. It is a bonus, but not necessary to have read that series first. In Christmas at Whitefriars, we are immediately drawn to Mary Beckwit

Set in England in 1912 and with a cast of colorful, realistic, and endearing characters, Christmas at Whitefriars is a charming story that delighted my historical romance loving heart. It’s rare to find a novella that doesn’t feel rushed, but Elizabeth Camden unfolds this story with perfect pacing and a satisfying and meaningful conclusion. The heroine, Mary Beckwith, loves Whitefriars Castle and is in her comfort zone there until Everett Wooten arrives with some questions, and problems arise. C ...more

Christmas at Whitefriars by Elizabeth Camden is a Christmas novella. That being said, the remodeling of the house and the investor coming to check on his investment is a different story than most tales of Christmas. The writing is top notch. I love how Camden described this castle in the middle of nowhere. I could completely visual the land and the structure. The plot filled me with Christmas joy, even though it is only late October. Mary is a caring individual who loves to socialize as long as ...more

I'm at a loss for words. The Lord and I had a nice little conversation tonight. I think he nudged me to read this sweet novella as a reminder from Him that He will always be by my side no matter what my circumstances are.
Psalm 56:3
When I am afraid I put my trust in you.
I know for me, this is hard to do. I'm sure it is for you readers out there too. Especially if you are going through changes in your life like Mary did. But I also like this saying when Evertte was talking to Mary about making

Christmas at Whitefriars was an absolutely wonderful novella that's sure to delight fans of historical romance. With the shorter length, I was afraid I wouldn't like this one as much as Camden's previous books. But I had nothing to worry about. For a novella, there was a lot packed into it. It was a full and complete story that didn't feel too short at all.

This is a companion novella to Camden's Empire State series. Mary is the sister of Colin Beckwith from A Dangerous Legacy. I love

Short stories and novellas require a certain skill, as an author has very little space in which to balance weaving a good story with creating characters that quickly become captivating. Of course, being the fantastic author that she is, Elizabeth Camden is definitely up to the task! On the surface, creating a novella such as Christmas at Whitefriars might seem a simpler task, drawing as it does on the Empire State series. Amazingly, though, a reader could easily enjoy this novella without ever having touch ...more

Completely engaging. This is a companion book A Dangerous Legacy. It's not necessary to read the other book, but it's great to recognize those friends in this book too. 1912 England. Mary lives at the family's old castle, and was tasked with the job of renovating it. A huge undertaking. She's in England, her brother and their investor are in America, so she's doing everything alone. Everett is an American, of a manufacturing family company that bought the castle for the image it lent to their fo ...more

It is rare that an author has time to pen characters that have depth and personalities that change and grow in novellas, but Elizabeth Camden does a fantastic job of crafting two characters that have realistic flaws, amusing quirks, and relatable insecurities that create truly memorable individuals. Their love story is sweet as it grows and is challenged throughout the story. I loved the descriptions and historical tidbits of the grand English castle, the details drawing me into the majestic set ...more

Christmas at Whitefriars is a delightful historical novella that is perfect for a Christmas reading spree. Although its length is short, the pages a packed with interesting and sometimes quirky characters, vivid descriptions of Whitefriars and its grounds, and a sweet romance that overcomes fear and social anxiety.

I loved both Mary and Everett and the manner that they encouraged and helped each other deal with their personal inadequacies. Despite its age and deterioration, Whitefriar

"It was both the happiest and the saddest Christmas of her life, for there would never be another quite like it." In 1912, Mary Beckwith (sister of Colin Beckwith from A Dangerous Legacy) lives alone in an English castle on her family's estate. They finally meet on a surprise Christmastime visit, and both parties decide it would be benefici ...more

This novella set in the year 1912 in England during the Christmas season is a heart-touching story of loneliness, love, and hope. Since this is a novella length story, I was not expecting the main characters, Everett and Mary, to have such depth to them. I felt Mary’s loneliness as she lived practically alone in the aging castle; and Everett’s sad conviction that since his personality was different than most in his upper class society, he’d never have a wife or family of his own. These two were ...more

Mary has been making good use of the funds provided by the deal her brother Colin made with the Wootens. Unfortunately she’s ignored mail from Everett and her brother reads it and discovers Everett isn’t happy and is talking about a suit against them. We see Colin, Lucy, Nick and Rosalind, along with getting to know Mary and Everett and her beloved castle Whitefriars. Beautiful story, most of which is spent at Whitefriars. Aside from our main characters we also meet some tenants at Whitefriars a ...more

I absolutely LOVED this novella!! Usually I don’t read novellas because I want more character and plot development than a novella typically gives. However, some how Elizabeth Camden worked her magic and this had amazing characters with a great plot. This didn’t feel rushed like a typical novella sometimes will. The heroine of this story is one of my all time favorites. I love how she exhibited that courage doesn’t mean the absence of fear; but moving forward while being afraid. She was perfectly

I loved this historical novella! A standalone spin-off from the series, An Empire State, that will leave you smiling long after you read it. Both characters Mari, and Everett are a bit eccentric,  which makes them endearing and has you rooting for them to work things out and for her castle success. I enjoyed seeing previous characters pop in, especially Nick. Although Elizabeth Camden didn’t add the element of suspense she usually does, it’s because,  and it has some measure of mystery as they t ...more

Loved it! Everett and Mary look to be so different in the beginning, but their differences bring the attraction to the surface. The tidbits of history about Whitefriars were delightful and just the right touch I've come to expect from this author.
It was fun to see the couples of the first two books in the Empire State series.
Wonderful story!

Oh my goodness, this was the perfect weekend read! Wonderful cast of characters. The chemistry and sweet love that grows between Everett and Mary was indeed enjoyable. I loved the spunkiness of Mary when it comes to defending her beloved castle and then how Everett comes to see that – just tingles of enjoyment reading that! This was well worth the read and perfect for a Christmas read, too.

Full circle...

A tidy story with all of our favorite Yorkers and New Yorkers. Christmas and love between two very tightly wound characters both outside their element made for a great story. I also love stories that lead the characters I to the future. Love it!!!
