You’ve been warned about middle-age spread. But no one told you about the squeeze .
You’re in the “Middle Ages”–sandwiched between the “greatest generation” and the “gimme” generations, busily juggling both with no relief in sight. Children are driving, and parents are not. Money is tight and so are your favorite jeans. And things that never ached before are beginning to give you trouble! For every baby boomer who wonders if it’s possible to navigate the Middle Ages with grace and style, Phil Callaway offers plenty of hope and a little hilarity, too. Because there’s nothing like a smile to make wrinkles less noticeable.
The author of Who Put My Life on Fast Forward? and Laughing Matters offers this lighthearted look at the challenges of the middle years — and promises that while we can’t slow down the aging process, we can ease the worries it brings by focusing on what really matters most.
I found this book while searching for books that provide guidance or in this case some humor on being an individual in this 'sandwich generation'....caring for children and aging parents. It's a book I read in stages and while I didn't laugh out loud, it did make me smile and look at some of my situations differently. One apparent key is to find the humor.
I read this cause my mom loved it and wanted me to read it. I did enjoy it as well. There are some quotes that I’m going to take away with me. For example, “‘No’ is a complete sentence.” This author intertwined his stories of his parents (first living on their own, than moving in with his family, and finally, having to move to a nursing home), his childhood, his kids, his career, his marriage, and his faith. He’s in the “sandwich generation”, a term that isn’t actually used, but instead the terms “spread” and / or “squeeze.” All are relevant and paint the picture of how hard it is to be in the middle.
Fantastic book! Humorous, loving, helpful. It addresses folks who care for their teen kids as well as their own aging parents. Giving my copy to my kids to read!
Very good read. Sent a copy to someone who I knew needed a lift. It was good to have read and laughed this month, because the next month would bring tragedy into my life, with the sudden death of my much-loved husband.
If you are struggling with caring for elderly parents and need a compassionate viewpoint with lots of humor and hope mixed in, you definitely will want to read this book.
