Off The Grid by John Hunt is a psychological thriller/horror novel.

First, let me thank the author for offering his book to me in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

The Good

Plot. Oh man, oh man, horror and thrillers are not my thing but I can definitely see this changing. Although it didn’t seem to be something I liked, I really wanted to get out of my comfort zone so I was like meh, let’s give this a try. Was I wrooooong????!!!! Yes I wassss!! The plot in this book is goalz. It is handled so well and the characters are so true to their identity you would believe this book was based on a true story. The way this plot twisted and turned and how t

Not exactly the story I was expecting after reading the synopsis. However, it did not disappoint.

Graham is a victim of a mass shooting, that takes the lives of his wife and child. After waking up with them gone and having been shot in the face, Graham wants nothing more than to live Off the Grid, away from people's staring gazes. When a young girl goes missing in the small town he lives in, the stranger with the mysterious past is a suspect. The detective on the case, Jodie, questions Graham an

Police Detective Jodie is called in on a missing child case. All the clues point to the town hermit, a disfigured man who lives out in the woods far from town. Jodie doesn't think he's guilty, but he's certainly involved...

The summary of this fascinating book only covers the first about fifteen percent. Although it seems like it's going to be a solid police procedural, it takes a swerve into urban fantasy after a while. None of this is meant as a deterrent; I really enjoyed the read.

In the beginning, Graham Richards is just another, typical family man. A trip to a new shopping mall, however, ends all this with the murder of his family and a close-range shot to the face. Damaged and scarred both physically and mentally, Graham becomes a recluse unable to hear much concourse with his fellow human beings.
Detective Jodie Reyes suspects there is more to Graham than meets the eye, when a young girl is returned safely to her family after being abducted.
Then there is a new case i

This is a very good book. A man withdraws from society after he is severely injured and his family killed. This first part of the book comes as no surprise, but the writing is excellent. You feel the anxiety and fear as the gunman draws nearer and the stark depression when Graham must face his future. His decision to live "off the grid" lets him go on when his options are few.
Then the world interrupts. When a young child is missing and authorities contact Graham, he must decide whether to

Off the Grid begins like too many people's stories end these days....with an active shooter killing random, innocent people at an outlet mall. Just like that, Graham's life changes forever. Three years later he lives "Off the Grid" in the woods outside of a small town. He can't stand to be around people. They literally make his head hurt. One night a 6 year old girl is kidnapped and Graham meets Jodie, the Detective working on the kidnapping and thus, his life changes yet again when he allows a ...more

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this book, and I am so glad I did. I am constantly looking for horror novels that are truly frightening and this book is a pristine example.

The book is an intermingling of multiple perspectives with meticulously developed characters. I was so deeply immersed I had to put the book down a few times with how realistic the writing is. I don’t want to give anything away, but it is really a unique, unexpected story that will make you question sleeping with the

5 Stars for Off the Grid by John Hunt! I didn't quite finish this one in time for Halloween but it's a great fall read, nonetheless! The first 5 pages were nauseatingly descriptive. So much so that I was hoping the gruesome details were only at the beginning and the rest of the book would be dedicated to resolution and justice. I was immediately hooked.

John Hunt chooses an unlikely hero in this book, a survivor. A lonely recluse who lost it all, lives "off the grid," until he can no longer sit

I discovered John Hunt’s fiction last year and was completely bowled over by The Tracker, which was one of my outstanding novels of 2018 and featured in my ‘Top 10 of 2018’ on Horror DNA. I then quickly backtracked and was equally impressed by his debut Doll House, which is an entirely different kind of horror; deeply psychological, grisly and incredibly powerful. His new novel has all the hallmarks of a very skilful writer at ...more

This book just grabbed my attention from the very beginning and didn’t let go. This is no slow burner - it’s a face paced thrill of a ride that will have you unable to tear yourself away from the pages. It’s gruesome and violent but it’s not gratuitous - it fits the story. The author’s attention to detail is just so good -and his writing flows very well. I love the interaction between Detective Jodie Reyes and Graham, a young father who survived a mall shooting in which his family was killed but ...more

A recluse in the Canadian woods

Graham Richards is living as a recluse in the woods of Ontario, Canada. He and his family had gone shopping at a small when a madman started shooting people. This book pulled me out of a reading slump. It was fast paced, interesting and unlike anything else I've read recently. I'd describe it as mystery/paranormal/romance but not in the way you think. There were moments I sat in awe of the author's use of detail. I felt like I could "see" the scenes unfolding in front of me. 5 stars!

Thank you to Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book. Very interesting premise with almost a science fiction overtone. Large segments of the book do not have the main characters in the story. The author could have tightened up his writing with more action and less mental ramblings. Many papragraphs are far too long, even to running over a full page in legnth.

This book was a fun, quick, spooky read. The main character is blind but can "see" spirits when he touches objects that once belonged to them. In this case, he is asked to investigate a haunted house to help determine what really happened there. I would say this book is both a mystery novel and a paranormal thriller. Interested to see what happens in the sequel!

Detailed review right here : http://thebusyshelf.home.blog/2019/10...

A much more detailed review is to come soon but until then, maaaan, I loooved it and it's not even my favorite genre of books!!! This was the perfect read for October and I appreciate Mr Hunt for some of his choices in this book to no end! I almost feel like putting a heart emoji here but it would clash with the gore and horror in this book. Anyway, I will stop rambling now but guys put this on your list for books to read for Halloween!!

Thank you Net Galley for allowing me to read Off the Grid.

All I can say is WOW! I could not put this book down! When Graham survives a mass shooting, which killed his wife and son, he is left with ugly scars and a dark and scary world which forces him to move in the woods and off the grid. He no longer wants to see, talk or deal with people and would rather be alone. However, he finds the company of local policeman and Detective Jodie Reyes at his door questioning him about the abduc
