Shifter Academy

An Impish Christmas

Rate this book
This Year, Kenzie's going to make Christmas great again. ;)

Kenzie is finally at the Shifter Academy, living her dreams, dating her super hot (and super granola) cat shifter boyfriend. After all the drama of last year, making this Christmas the best ever should be a piece of pie (make that a large slice with extra whipped cream). Right?

Wrong.

When Kenzie’s Christmas plans meet with heavy reluctance, Kenzie’s left holding the decorations all by herself. Oh, except for the impossibly adorable mer guy, who seemed to be on team make-Kenzie’s-life-miserable, now wants to help. What’s with that?

Add to the mix a dash of magic gone awry, and now Kenzie’s chasing a magical imp that’s tearing down all her attempts to jollify the joint.

She’ll need to track down the imp, undo the errant magic, and get everyone in the Christmas spirit before time runs out. Fail, and she could be expelled—or worse, the school might just come crumbling down. Again.

This story is a part of the Shifter Academy world, and occurs about one year following the USA Today bestselling Siren Prophecy series, but can be read as a stand-alone novel. Perfect for fans of heartwarming Christmas shenanigans, like The Grinch, and sweet holiday romantic comedies.

Angel Leya is a hopeless romantic who’s been dreaming about her OTP (one true pairing) for as long as she can remember. She’s a lover of the paranormal and believer in the supernatural, and she infuses all her stories with at least a touch of that magic.

This just was not my cup of tea.
The christmas theme felt very forced and pushed basically everywhere one turned and did not exactly fit with what was happening. I did not enjoy the characters either, they were trying too hard to be like the countless other academy like books...fun and sassy. But it did not work for me.

I got this eARC from Netgalley

If you are in the mood for a festive story that is fun with bells on than this book is it ! Kenzie is a Selkie and its the last term at the Shifter academy where all manner of young supernaturals are taught. It doesn't matter that the Merfolk can be snooty because Kenzie has friends she trusts and Wes her boyfriend who is finally getting to grips with his transformation. Still Kenzie doesn't want a repeat of last year's disastrous Christmas so she's going to do everything she can to ramp up the good cheer but with strange dreams about a Mer boy and what appears to be sheer bad luck what will Kenzie do when she realises there's an Imp on the loose ?
Sweet, silly and engaging are the words that come to mind. This YA holiday story keeps pouring on the charm as the heroine lurches from one catastrophe to another. Add in emotional tension as her relationship teeters on the brink and a most unpleasant"helper" to make this story very different indeed. It ends leaving this reader feeling very ready for Christmas and yes I'm ready for more from this new to me author.
This voluntary take is of an advanced copy and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

This book is classed as a standalone, but at times I did feel as though I should have read the other books in this series. To be able to understand everything fully. Needless to say it didn’t really stop me from enjoying the book.

Kenzie is a Seklie and she is finally a student at the Shifter Academy. As a Selkie she has magic where other students have other talents. Kenzie is the only Selkie in the school which has made it hard for her to be accepted by some of the other students. As they still don’t thing she should be at the school.

When Kenzie goes back to school after Thanks Giving, and as Christmas approaches all Kenzie can think about is bringing back the Christmas Spirit to the school. As something happened at the school the Christmas before.

Kenzie decides to approaches her boyfriend Wes and her friends Leya, June and Jesse during meal time to see if they would help her. They really don’t feel excited about trying to get the school in the Christmas spirit. Basically they don’t want to spend their spare time decorating the the school and trying to get the other students into the swing of things.

Kenzie still can’t give up on her vision of Christmas so she decides that she will just have to go it alone. In doing so she cast a helpers spell in spell’s class as she thought that she could use it on her friends. As she was practising to cast the spell she was interrupted. So she quickly cast another spell to cancel out the helper spell. Except the spell had backfired without her knowing it.

Later Kenzie decides that she is going to make a start on her bring the Christmas Spirit to everyone by herself. While she is decorating the entrance to the food hall, Trevor one of the Mer, who is best friends with Kenzie’s main antagoniser, offers her his help. Kenzie is sceptical on his motives for helping her but she relents as he is taller and can decorate higher than she can. Please with their handy work they think Kenzie’s idea to bring back the Christmas spirit is defiantly now on track.

However the next morning as Kenzie goes to the food hall for breakfast, all of her and Trevor’s handy work was destroyed and in tatters. Needless to say Kenzie is upset about what has happened and she is sure Trevor’s friends and her nemesis are behind this destruction. She makes known her suspicions to the Academy Director.

Still undeterred Kenzie puts different plans in to place, and each time her efforts are yet again either destroyed or sabotaged.

During one night Kenzie is woken up as she sensed that something wasn’t quite right. When she went out to the main part of the school all hell had been broken loose. As she looked around at all the mess and destruction she heard a manic laugh, and a small figure running away, which she decided to class as an anti helper.

Kenzie started to realise that this small creature was down to her doing and that she needed to fix it fast. So she wouldn’t be expelled from the school she had worked so hard to get into. Luckily for Kenzie her new friend Trevor was there to give a helping hand. Which really didn’t do anything in helping her relationship with Wes. As the days went by and more disasters happened she ended up being royally dumped by Was in front of the whole school, as he couldn’t take anymore.

Can Kenzie stop this little anti helper that she is now calling an Imp, from destroying everything without the director finding out she is responsible for whats been going on. Will Travis still stand by her as all of her other friends have turned their backs on her and will she ever be able to win back Wes back.

An enjoyable little read to get you into the Christmas spirit. With some very funny parts that made me chuckle and I’m sure they will make you chuckle as well.

What’s better than a ride in Santa’s sleigh on Christmas Eve? Sitting down and reading this Shifter Academy gem.

Kenzie has finally made it into the shifter school she’s wanted to join for some time. Since last Christmas was full of vampires and danger, she’s looking to make this Christmas the best it can possibly be. But friends and peers aren’t as eager, except one particular guy who’s been eyeing Kenzie. But what about Wes?

There’s drama. There’s a crazy imp bent on ruining Kenzie’s Christmas plans. There are twists and turns that will keep you guessing?

Have an itch for an awesome holiday read to cozy up with on a cold winter’s night. Check this one out!

Disclosure: I was sent an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This was a great mix of a PNR book with a Hallmark movie. I genuinely had no clue what twist was coming next and if ended with a super warm, hit chocolate at Christmas feeling in my chest.

I really enjoyed that the heroine isn’t perfect and makes mistakes. I’m super curious to find out what happened with several of the loose ends yet to be tied up.

I couldn't really put my finger on it but something felt off throughout the story. The main character's back and forth regarding her relationship, calling her bf "granola", and the Make Christmas Great gain thing got annoying quick. I wish it had delved more into her friendships instead of just focusing on love interests.

Set aside a day for this delightful YA paranormal academy Christmas romance that starts in Shallow Grave at Thanksgiving and follows selkie Kenzie MacLugh back to school at Dome Shifter Academy in Chicago. I had an ARC via StoryOrigin that got lost in the queue and this is my voluntary review.

This is a fun, light, YA fantasy novel. This is the first book I've read in this series, and I thought the world was extremely well built and very interesting. I love the high school/college style setting of the Shifter Academy and how it's full of different and exciting types of supernatural beings.

This book had me googling what in the world 'granola' means in this context, I must be getting old!

I thought Kenzie and Wes were adorable (mostly). Even though there are times when Kenzie is definitely not going to be winning any 'Girlfriend of The Year' awards, she is young and still learning, so I do cut her some slack. (Her favourite catchphrase would certainly be 'whatever'. She says or thinks it 60+ times throughout the book - it did start to get a little irritating).

However, I thought Trevor's actions and his obsession with Kenzie was far from cute and not okay, it was harassment. I did not like the way the romance was headed but I was relieved that Kenzie realised her mistakes in the end. The imp's identity was also very predictable but it didn't really bother me.

I enjoyed the book, though I'm not sure I entirely agree that this can be read as a 'stand alone'. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't completely lost or anything, but past events are constantly being mentioned, and those events have clearly greatly impacted the current dynamics, relationships, plot line, and it made me feel like I was missing something. It's still readable but I do think most readers will enjoy this more if they are already familiar with the world and characters.

I'm sure fans of The Shifter Academy series will love this special Christmas edition.

***I was given an ARC copy and I am voluntarily writing a review for this book***

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC copy of this book from the wonderful Angel Leya and while my review is definitely overdue, (don't you hate it when life gets in the way of reading?) I have to say that I absolutely loved An Impish Christmas! I couldn't put it down! No, seriously, I read the entire book in one sitting. I absolutely love Kenzie and all of the mischief that happens in this book from her desire to spread Christmas cheer. This book had me laughing out loud almost the entire time. I love that you get to delve deeper into the characters of Kenzie and Wes and see just how strong a bond they have. And could Ren and Kenzie's mom, Lita, be any cuter? These characters are wonderful and the story completely absorbs you. I would recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of the Shifter Academy series, or if you haven't read any yet, this would be a fun place to start. I'm definitely hoping to read more from Angel Leya as well as more in the Shifter Academy world in the future. I will definitely be reading this book again during the holidays!

Woops! I joined this series already REALLY in progress. We're talking a lot of stories, world building, and character development! It says this can be read standalone, but I'm sure you would appreciate a lot of what happens more if you knew these characters better.

Kenzie is a selkie shifter who is a bit of an outcast at school. She has a core group of friends and a boyfriend, but appears to feel very alone, especially when nobody wants to join in with her christmas celebration and decorating. One random person who appears suspiciously interested in helping her is a mer-shifter, who also happens to hang around her biggest bullies. Trevor, said mer-person, obviously shows interest in Kenzie, and I was a little torn about rooting for him when she was apparently mated to Wes (previously mentioned boyfriend).

Things go from bad to worse when Kenzie accidentally casts a "helper" spell that causes someone to be compelled to make all sorts of mischief. There's a lot of boyfriend drama, friend drama, misunderstandings, and christmas related destructions. All in all, we find our way to a happy ending, but jeez it takes a lot to get there.

Well put up the Christmas tree and hang your tinsel because An Impish Christmas is the best, lighthearted, fun and funniest book I have read all Season long! Although Angel is a new author to me, I could not resist the description of this book and I was not one bit disappointed. Trying to spread some major Christmas cheer is a big enough job on its own. Adding in a terrorizing little 'anti-helper' or imp made it 3 times harder but Kenzie was not about to be deterred. This book had me giggling, smiling and laughing as I read along at practically breakneck speed. It was such a fast read, I had it done in a couple of hours. Of course, then I was sad because the fun was over. I did think her boyfriend Wes needed to get over himself a little but thank heavens for Trevor. Although this is linked to the other Shifter Academy books, it truly can stand on it's own. So if you are looking for some Christmas Spirit or just a good, fun book, do not miss An Impish Christmas!

5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Kenzie decides to get her school into the Christmas spirit. She tries to get her friends and others involved. No one wants to help her. So she sets out to do it herself.
While trying to get others into the Christmas spirit, she is dealing with Wes. He seems distant, tired and not really into the relationship. She is worried but doesn't want to push him.
When Trevor decides to befriend her, she is starts to see him in a new light. She feels guilty for it. As he helps her with her Christmas stuff, they become closer. Wes doesn't like it.
With the problems going on at school, Kenzie will try to fix this problem on her own. With school, problems with Wes and her friends, dealing with Trevor. Kenzie will have more than enough on her hands.
Will Kenzie survive the issue or will lose everything to is important to her.

This was a really enjoyable read, takes you away for a little while.

It says this book can be read as a standalone but it keeps referencing to previous stories and characters that I knew nothing about and it was confusing at times. Quite a few characters are mentioned but not really developed (maybe you really have to read the other books to know them).

I understand this is a YA book but it seems to be for a much younger audience. The main character Kenzie sounds childish and acts like a brat, I didn't like her at all. Apparently she only knows one adjective to describe her boyfriend ("granola") and has only one goal in life "make Christmas great again", it got old really quick.

For those who have read the Shifter Academy books and enjoy them, I'm sure this is a nice and light Christmas read. I'm afraid it wasn't really for me.

Thank you to the publisher who provided me with an e-copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

"An Impish Christmas" is the first book I have read by this author. The story was easy to follow as a standalone but kept referencing past events that happened in previous stories. Kenzie is the only selkie at the Shifter Academy and apparently last year she ruined Christmas for everyone. This year she is determined to make it great for everyone but no one wants to help. A little magic spell gone awry and an imp appears that keeps sabotaging all Kenzie's plans. Cute and sometimes funny with hints of romance, the story is enjoyable with characters you want to get to know. I plan on going back to read the first story and all future ones as this author has made a new fan. My voluntary, unbiased review is based upon a review copy from Netgalley.

A big thank you to NetGalley and Books Go Social for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. This is part of the Shifter Academy Series. It says it can be read as a stand alone but I am not sure that this really works. I felt confused and frustrated as I didn't understand the world. There are a lot of names thrown at you in a short time. There are hints of romance. This is a YA book and I think in the Harry Potter theme. It was ok but as I said I was a bit frustrated. I think reading one of the others in the series would help a lot with this one. 3 stars

I didn't realize this book was part of a series when I received my ARC but it was a very cute read. Kenzie is an extremely klutzy heoine that you can't help but cheer for. She is determined to help bring Xmas to her school. The cast of secondary characters were enjoyable to read. Its a quick happy read that will leave you with a cliffhanger.

An Impish Christmas was a wonderful read. It was the first Shifter Academy book I've read which made me wish I'd read more! This book definitely referenced a lot of things from the rest of the series, but was still a good read without knowledge of the previous books. I loved reading about Kenzie and Wes and seeing Kenzie's family. Maybe I'll go back and read more Shifter Acadmey books, too!

I never was invested with any of the characters. The relationships between Kenzie and her friends and especially her boyfriend, Wes, were not developed at all. In fact, I didn't really like any of the characters. Her "Make Christmas Great Again" project was a good idea but it didn't have enough be a whole book about it. Book just wasn't for me.

Magical Mayhem!
Hysterically funny Christmas story. Kenzie is a selkie Shifter who wants to make Christmas special for everyone at the Shifter Academy. Her attempt to get help backfired when the spell she cast creates an Imp determined to wreak Christmas. Great characters and unique storyline. This is the first book I’ve read from the series and I loved it. I plan to read the rest. Enjoy!
