Today, my students and I celebrated our annual “Tea with Miss E,” a raffle reward for our fall fundraiser for our school. The student chosen gets to choose a friend to enjoy tea, hot chocolate, treats and conversation with me after school (not to be confused with detention!). This year’s tea was particularly poignant to me for two reasons. I sat at a table with two boys, shattering the stereotype of girls’ tea parties, and I read David Platt’s Something Needs to Change:

“On a table in the room,

This book is dangerous.

It’s also nothing like I expected when I picked it up. (Then again, the underwhelming solid-blue ARC cover had nothing to do with it, I’m sure…and blue is my favorite color. I mean, come on, look at the awesome final cover above! Beautiful!) “Oh … this released a couple weeks back. Guess I should read it.” Heh. Famous last words.

Something Needs to Change is the clean and — if I may say it, nobler — version of Jon Krakauer’s Into Thin Air. I’ll confe

Told as a story. This book has opened my eyes afresh to the desperate physical and spiritual suffering in the world. It’s hard to forget the stories Platt shares. Two quotes:

“Rescue those being taken off to death,
And save those stumbling towards slaughter.
If you say, “but we didn’t know about this,”
Won’t he who weighs hearts consider it?
Won’t he who protects your life know?
Won’t he repay a person according to his work?
(Proverbs 24:11-12)

I wasn't sure what to expect with this book but now that I've read it, I can't stop contemplating the things brought to me. It's a call to action, a call to what it means to be a Christian, to love God. The author is on trip, trekking through the Himalayan Mountains, and as meets the villagers and people of this region, he realizes there is so much need, darkness. What he tells us is eye opening, startling, as he begins to question the gospel and ask where is God in all of this hopelessness. And ...more

I received this ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
David Platt, the author is a pastor who was invited to go to the Himalayas to see first hand the poverty and the needs of the people living in this huge mountains. He was awestruck by the scenery to begin with but was confronted with some large truths as he trekked along the mountain trails and met some of the people. Most of the people had never heard about Jesus and were very hostile to the gospel, but under it all t

"Something Needs to Change" is much different than Platt's previous books. In this read, Platt writes a day by day journal style of his experiences trekking through the Himalayas. He shares experiences he witnessed, conversations he had, scriptures he read, and personal convictions he weighed. Each story is an eye opener to how Christians are called to live in serving and reaching the nations. Platt is very honest and vulnerable in what he learned during this trip, while also calling other Chris ...more

David Platt seems to be a very dualistic thinker - you're either in or out, saved or lost, forgiven or damned, etc. I just couldn't seem to get past that.

This book will challenge you in your faith. I guarantee you cannot read this book without being moved to go deeper with God.

Wow! What a powerful book!
