A walk down memory lane, reliving the simpler times, recalling the signs of times, smiling, cringing and understanding! That’s the magic of Steven Manchester’s BREAD BAGS & BULLIES, the latest in his heartwarming tales of family, love, loyalties and life situations told with real attention to details. Embrace the unbridled fantasies and realities of middleclass youth, siblings who will fight each other, but never allow the outside world to come between them.

Relive the memories of childhood

This novel certainly took me down memory lane to the mid 1980s. The family story of three boys bickering, farting, playing Atari, and conniving was a bit of a shock for this reader having had all sisters. I wasn't quite ready for the foul language either. At times I felt like I was wandering down the aisles of a store with all the brand names. Pop didn't just watch TV, he watched the Zenith, for example. Ma didn't just smoke a cigarette but a Carlton 100. And the humor? Well, the boys laughed ...more

Bread Bags and Bullies is a coming-of-age story about three brothers, Herbie, Wally, and Cockroach and takes place during a February vacation in 1984. It made me laugh throughout, and conveyed the importance of family and the people in our childhood. Life is full of memories, but perhaps it’s the childhood memories that are the best, and help to shape who we are today.

In Steven Manchester’s signature style, the writing is simple, flowing, and easy to read, but most importantly, a feel good read

‘Some things never change’ – journey back to the 80s

This reviewer became acquainted with the very special novels of Steven Manchester with his novel `The Unexpected Storm: The Gulf War Legacy' and many short stories that deal with one man's view of the universe in a lighter tone. That followed with his TWELVE MONTHS, GOODNIGHT, BRIAN, ROCKIN' CHAIR, GOODNIGHT, GOOSEBERRY ISLAND, PRESSED PENNIES, THE CHANGING SEASON - each of which allowed entry into his ability to address end of life situations,

Those who grew up in the 1980’s are going to love this novel which describes the family of Herbie, Wally and Cockroach, three brothers who loved and tormented each other while growing up. They grow up in a strict family where the rules are definite although somewhat out of the box of today’s norms. Steven Manchester is uniquely talented to capture the essences of a person (or family’s) strengths and weaknesses that is real and without artifice. It’s funny as well!

They’re definitely addicted to

If you follow my blog, you know I am a huge fan of Steven Manchester's work and have read many of his books. One thing that I wonder when I start turning the pages of his latest book, in this case, BREAD BAGS & BULLIES, will it be another exceptional read as all his past books. I'll let you know!!!

I assume, with most parents, there comes a day when we all realize that we sound just like our parents when speaking to our own children. That's exactly what happens with Herbie, as he gets out of

Bread Bags & Bullies: Surviving the ’80s was a fantastic, heart felt, laugh out loud read. Steven has a personal way of writing that is honest, fresh and down to earth. You feel as though you are right there experiencing every moment with the family. It reminded me of all the good laughs you have with friends over the good old days.

The ’80s were definitely a simpler time (I was a very young child growing up but I still remember the endless days of being outside until it was dark and those

Everyone who knows me and knows this blog understands how big of an influence the 1980's were in my life. For a bulk of this decade, I was in high school and college. The music, the TV shows, the comics, and everything are touchstones for me. So, when I heard about my Twitter author-friend Steven Manchester's upcoming book, I was very excited to check it out.

Bread Bags and Bullies: Surviving the '80's is all about the memories from a decade gone by. After breaking up an altercation between his

I have a sister and a brother. There are so many things that go on in this book that I could see happening with my siblings. I shared a room with my sister and there were fights, my mom sent me outside to play and I did not return until the street lights came on, and only the siblings were allowed to talk about or pick on each other no one outside of the three of us were allowed.

I am a huge fan of Steven Manchesters. With each of his books I am pulled into a world that I could see myself in. I

“The 80’s really were a magical time”
Bread Bags and Bullies is a wonderful novel that takes place in the winter of 1984. A time I know well (I was a senior in high school). It takes the reader back to a time where teenagers were independent, they went places by walking or riding their bicycles, they were outside regardless of weather. Kids faced and handled their fears and problems. Lessons were learned and there were consequences. So many familiar 80’s pop culture references are woven into

I am such a fan of Steven Manchester and have read many of his books if not all of them. This is another one that does not disappoint. The 80's were the best of times for me and this sure does bring you back down memory lane. From the "loves baby soft" to having to be in when "the lights come on". . So many parts of this novel will have you laughing and remembering your own memories from that time. I did not know about the bread bags, that was a new one to me but this family will remind you I am ...more

A look into the minds of Boys, who grew up in the era of my Daughter.
I gleefully connected with the music, TV shows, toys and Family customs (we all had them). But the dynamic between brothers was a whole new adventure.
As always, I thoroughly enjoyed my visit into the past, courtesy of one of my favorite authors. I think you will too.

BREAD BAGS & BULLIES, Surviving the 80s by Steven Manchester
Have read many other works by this author and know it will be another great one.
80's are brought out in this book. Starts with praise from others about how this book effected them.
Love the reinforcement of boys being friends even though they fought. My siblings were the same.
Loved the memories of sledding, very similar to what we experienced as kids.
Like the language and words for their siblings, too funny!
Love how the ending brings
