This Step 1 Step into Reading title is about a Baby Panda who is on a mission to find the perfect type of kiss!
Baby Panda's parents offer “A soft kiss? A sweet kiss? A sticky bamboo treat kiss” but after everything, his perfect kiss might've been in front of him the whole time...
From one of the most recognizable names in the easy-to-read field, this sweet Step 1 features big type and easy words for children who know the alphabet and are eager to begin reading. A rhyming text with a bouncy rhythm and adorable illustrations paired with picture clues help children decode the story.
Alyssa Satin Capucilli was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1957. She graduated from Sarah Lawrence College, and pursued her interest in dance, becoming a professional dancer and dance instructor. Though Capucilli had written stories, poems, and even puppet shows as a child, she didn't consider a career as a writer until after her own two children were born. To this day she sees herself as both a dancer and a writer, and the two professions complement each other nicely: dancing is, in her words, “telling stories in another way,” and readers of her children's books can attest to the rhythm of her language. Since 1994, she has written more than 15 books for children, and her work has been translated into French, Hebrew, Afrikaans, Greek, and Bulgarian.
Capucilli lives in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York, with her husband and children. They have a chocolate Labrador retriever named Huckleberry, who likes to watch the author at work.
A fairly bland picture book can be turned into a rip-roaring comedy when reading it aloud to preschoolers and having them make kissing noises every time I say the word "kiss," which is in pretty much every sentence of this story.
"How about a sunny kiss? How about a bunny kiss?" "But the best kiss is - from both of you!"
Miss 4 and I like to explore different books and authors at the library, sometimes around particular topics or themes. We try to get different ones out every week or so; it's fun for both of us to have the variety and to look at a mix of new & favourite authors.
Such a sweet book! The illustrations are extremely colorful with vibrant colors and so darn cute! It's a simple story about different kinds of kisses (bunny kisses, fish kisses, etc.). It ends on a really cute note.
I find this early reader about a loving panda family who give all kinds of kisses, just adorable. I'm sure it is one I'll check out often over the next few years of teaching my children how to read.
When we think of Alyssa Satin Capucilli, we of course think of Biscuit. But we found this book at our local library and we really liked it. It's a true Level 1 book and it is so much fun to read aloud. We would give each other a kiss for each time it is mentioned in the book (it's a lot of kisses!) and we had fun pretending what kind of kiss it was. Our favorite was the fishy kisses. It's a colorful and fun book with a rhythmic and rhyming narrative; good for beginning readers.
I read this years ago and liked it, and was very pleased to find a copy at a thrift store for fifty cents. It's not exceptional as a beginning reader, but I appreciate it because of the cute pandas.
