BLOOD & ASH by Deborah Wilde is a well-written urban fantasy detective book with a side of romance. It is book one in the Jezebel Files series.
This story mainly takes place in Vancouver, Canada where some people have magic and others don’t. Ashira Cohen is the only female private investigator in Vancouver and she works on non-magical cases. When she takes on a missing person case, she feels it will be an easy case. However, she is attacked and hits her head. A hidden tattoo is revealed and, ...more

I'm pretty torn on this one. On one hand, we have Wilde's signature humour, good technical writing, and some nice diversity; on the other hand, we have an absolutely TERRIBLE plot and somewhat unenthusiastic romance.
Also, you know what? This felt WAY too much like reading Wilde's other series, the Unlikeable Demon Hunter, to the extent that I was getting deja vu.

Ashira and Levi have been butting heads since they were young. Pretty much do the same as adults, but add in some mystery, sexual tension and they’re off. Deborah Wilde has created another snarky, taking names and kicking a$$ heroine that I can’t get enough of! I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough! Now I really need more. Like right now!

This was my first book by Deborah Wilde and I must say I quite liked it.
It was exactly what expected it to be in the best way possible. When I read the blurb I was intrigued and I'm happy to say the book didn't disappoint at all. Everything I hoped for when I started reading this book I got: magic & kick ass heroine, the action, sparks filled relationship between Ashira and Levi, fabulous secondary characters, interesting mythology... There are also some great relationship dynamics that I'm ...more

Snarky is exactly what this detective is in an interesting nod at Sherlock Holmes, which packs tons of action, heaps of attitude and a romance which fits right into the slot.

This is the first book in a new series by this author. This is the second series that she's done and I've read, but it feels like they may be playing in the same world as the previous. In the Nava Katz series, they were Jewish mystic warriors, witches and demons. But, they never really did too much in regards to how the public saw magic, or the governmental structure of the public at large. But, this book has magic out in ...more

I received a free copy of BLOOD AND ASH: A SNARKY URBAN FANTASY DETECTIVE SERIES (Book 1 of the Jezebel Files) by Deborah Wilde in exchange for an honest review. Ashira Cohen’s a bit of an anti-social, rulebreaking rebel. Ashira ditched her mother’s world of wealth, schmoozing, and anti-magic activism to be the only female private investigator in Vancouver. Though not anti-magic like her mom, Ashira frequently comes into conflict with her childhood nemesis Levi Montefiore, who now heads one of

In Deborah Wilde's Blood & Ash, we follow private investigator Ashira Cohen. Ashira is a Mundane, which means she doesn't have magical abilities. When Ashira gets a concussion on a case, she finds out about a tattoo she didn't know she had along with a bit more than she bargained for. Along with mysterious smudges appearing and causing heart attacks in magic users, Ashira teams up with the ...more

I received this novel from net galley and the publisher. Thank you! All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Magic and mayhem seem to find Ashira Cohen, who is a private investigator and a snarky one at that. Ash is successful in her career, even though she has family issues, which still affect her. Got to luv Ash's personality and she is stubborn to boot. When a case lands her with Levi, head of House Pacifica, who has strong magic, and long-time enemy of Ash and sexy to boot, everything changes. ...more

A great series beginner. This action-packed, well-written, magical read was a real page turner. Its full of unexpected twist, mystery, suspense and a bit of steam to whet the appetite. The author did an amazing job building this world, its storyline and characters. Ashira, a feisty, kickass no nonsense P.I., life just got more complicated, not only must she deal with her newly discovered magic but with her new cases, all of which appears to be connected.

I really liked this novel. It pitches itself as snarky and it delivers in that respect. I particularly enjoyed the diversity - a Jewish heroine and her best friend was of Indian descent. And it was set in Canada! It makes a pleasant change from the usual US set urban fantasy novels. The plot itself was so-so, decent but not terribly different or exciting. The romance was lukewarm. It had potential but at this stage it did not quite hit the mark. However, these few things did not impair my

Blood & Ash plays true to its name as a Snarky Urban Fantasy Detective series. Ash is full of sass and sarcasm as she tackles cases as a mundane detective in a magical world. One unfortunate fight later and Ash's life is turned on its head and the tension with her frenemy is off the charts. Missing kids, evil golems, and an evil queen of hearts what more can you ask for in an original story that is full of action and humor. The story builds quick and catches the imagination and leaves you

Oh my giddy hat. It is just the best when an author who wrote you series you loved follows it up with what will be another great series.
In this series magic is known, people are split between those who have it and those who don't. Our girl, Ash doesn't but knows enough to sometimes take on some detective work. And there the story stars, I can't say for fear of getting into gushy and spoiler land. All I got is Ash is amazing - shades of similarity to Nave, but different in ways too - her bestie ...more

I loved this book and can't wait for the next one in the series.Deborah Wilde is great at creating flawed but fun characters. While this is the first of a new series and there is plenty of world building going on the story doesn't get bogged down in it, which many first books in a series do.

Ash is a mundane where 10% of humans have some king of magical abilities, she's a PI reduced to minor investigations because the Head of House Pacifica has deemed her unable to investigate anything involving the magical, even cheating spouse cases. Then an innocent bump on the head reveals a strange tattoo and hitherto unknown magic blood powers.
If the idea of a secular Jewish PI with attitude and unheard of magical powers floats your boat then I think I have a new series for you. Engaging ...more

A fun start to a new series. Interesting world and I enjoyed that it was set in Vancouver, Canada. That doesn’t happen that often.
Ash is a fab character who reminds me at times of Kate Daniels. I enjoyed very much as well as her best friend. Her nemesis aka love interest is hot and mysterious. The romance was a okay but I got a little bored with the constant back and forth. I hope things are explained a little more in the next book.

I've been waiting for this series to start for so long.… After absolutely loving the Unlikeable Demon Hunter, I was keen to read more by Ms Wilde but a little wary of being disappointed. I read it in one sitting, I was so drawn into the story it was more like watching a great film the visuals just popped up on their own. I loved the interaction between Ash and her people. She's incredibly snarky and prickly but manages to be endearing at the same time. Some aspects do remind me a little of Nava,

Ash is a private investigator within a magical community. Having no magical abilities, she is limited to taking mundane investigations. When a mysterious tattoo is found after an injury, everything she has known is turned on end. Loved the snarky dialog, the superiority complex of the "hero", and the mystery was great. I was sad when Nava's series ended by this author, but this will do just fine! I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

I loved this book! Ashira works as a private investigator and ends up investigating her new skill set and how it happened. Levi is powerful, attractive and has been a thorn in Ash’s side since they were children. Their relationship is funny and explosive. I can’t wait to read more! I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

A global wanderer, hopeless romantic, and total cynic with a broken edit button, Deborah writes urban fantasy to satisfy her love of smexy romances and tales of chicks who kick ass. This award-winning author is all about the happily-ever-after, with a huge dose of hilarity along the way. “It takes a bad girl to fight evil. Go Wilde.”
