Love in Ocean Grove #6

Sabrina and the Secret Santa

Rate this book

It’s hard to enjoy Christmas with a broken heart.

Or at least that’s how Trevor Salvatore feels. Distracted by losing the girl of his dreams to another guy, Trevor realizes that he forgot to complete a mandatory service project he needs for graduation. He has until the new year to get the hours in, which is how he ends up volunteering at the Christmas Village in Ocean Grove.

Sabrina would rather be shopping. Or planning her annual Secret Santa. Or almost anything other than hanging out with the locals in Ocean Grove. Unfortunately, she’s in trouble. Big trouble, and the judge isn’t interested in excuses or favors. She has thirty days to complete sixty hours of community service to get her life back on track.

Can thirty days, sixty hours, endless candy canes, and gallons of hot chocolate teach these two that sometimes the best gift has been right in front of them the whole time?

Sabrina and the Secret Santa is a standalone novel from Love in Ocean Grove, series of books about swoony first time love and toe-curling kisses for readers of all ages.

Wow, that was the shortest book in the series but finally I got a book about a character I'm excited about and it certainly delivered :D
This story is about previous reject from the previous books, Sabrina who nearly ruined Carter's life and Trevor who loved Norah and deserved way better than this, they both find themselves signed up for community service at the local Christmas event, Trevor is trying to get over Norah and Sabrina is trying to turn a new leaf for her life, they both can learn something from one another and their relationship starts as something fake slowly becomes something real

I was really scared that the author won't give Trevor justice but I'm glad she actually delivered and I enjoyed this book so so much, both these characters grew in an organic way and also I'm in the mood for a Christmas book and this one certainly hit the mark ..
so glad I got to finish this series, it was so fast and I liked it

Fun, G-rated, YA, “enemies to lovers,” Christmas romance

High school senior, Trevor Salvatore, recently disappointed in love, is already not feeling the Christmas spirit when he finds out that he is required by his school district to put in 60 mandatory public service hours in his community, the fictional, small, beachside community of Ocean Grove, California. Unfortunately, Trevor has family obligations helping his mother care for his autistic brother, as well as his schoolwork, a part-time job, and he is a member of the high school wrestling team. But if he wants to graduate, he has no choice. The school counselor suggests taking care of volunteering now, during the holiday season, because he can no longer viably postpone it. The least-worst choice available to him at present is helping with decorations and playing Santa for the Ocean Grove Community Center’s holiday project for underprivileged children, its Christmas Village.

High school junior, Sabrina Hallford, is shocked to discover that her father’s money and influence can’t prevent her having to appear in court for a traffic violation. It’s Thanksgiving week, for goodness sake, and the whole issue is nonsense as far as she is concerned. It’s not her fault that on a day she and her two best girlfriends skipped their most boring class at their exclusive, private high school, Ocean Grove Academy, her friends opted to get high, and she had to drive them home. Yes, she only has a learner’s permit, and even if she had a license, she could not legally drive her teenage friends. But she had no choice. She couldn’t be expected to have allowed either of the other girls to drive. Unfortunately, the hard-nosed judge has no interest in Sabrina’s side of the story and takes offense that she, her father, and his high-priced attorney clearly assume that Sabrina will get special treatment because of her father’s wealth. She scolds all three of them equally, before ordering Sabrina to complete 50 hours of community service at the Ocean Grove Community Center’s Christmas Village before December 31. Or else.

When Trevor shows up at the community center to begin his volunteer stint, he is directed to the basement. But before he makes his presence known, he overhears one of the most beautiful teenage girls he’s ever seen attempting to bribe the center’s director with a fat check from her moneybags father in exchange for signing her volunteer form, confirming that she’s completed her community service hours without actually doing them. The girl is dressed in an Academy uniform and insists that she simply can’t volunteer because she has too many plans already in place for the holiday season. The director, naturally enough, refuses the bribe. Though Academy kids have a reputation for being spoiled, Trevor decides this snobby girl completely takes the cake. Given all his responsibilities, Trevor himself has definitely been feeling reluctant to put in his required hours. But with Little Miss Academy taking up all the available emotional space for self-pity, he suddenly steps forward with previously unavailable vigor and purpose, to demonstrate to this clueless girl, whose name seems to be Sabrina, what responsibility looks like.

Trevor is an amazing hero, a thoroughly decent and compassionate guy who is kind and loving to his special-needs brother and so amazingly supportive to his beleaguered single mother, he is every overloaded mom’s dream of an ideal son.

Though Sabrina starts out the story as an entitled snob, a gradual and subtle revealing across the length of the story of her home life as the child of a single-father who is a workaholic, and her social circle of narcissistic, über-privileged teenagers, shows without telling the forces which have shaped Sabrina’s obnoxious attitude toward life. Though this is a relatively short novel, Sabrina has a well-motivated growth arc which is strongly inspired by the quality time she spends with Trevor, his mother and, most especially, his autistic brother. In the process, this terrific teen romance ably portrays two classic, ever-green themes of adult, romance novels: the “enemies to lovers” plot and the “redemption” plot.

This novel is also employs several other classic romance tropes: alternating point of view of the hero and heroine, no cheating or romantic triangles, and a guaranteed HEA.

This story is G-rated, in that there is no foul language, no sex, and the protagonists do not drink or do drugs. As such, it is suitable for all ages.

Note that this book is part of a series, all set in the same seaside town. Each novel is standalone, and there are no cliffhangers in any of the books, including this one. Both Trevor and Sabrina, however, are subcharacters in previous books in this series, and it enriches one’s enjoyment of this book if one has read those books. Sabrina appears as a romantic antagonist in Bea and the Bad Boy, Book 3 of this series, and the protagonists of that book have cameo appearances in this book. Trevor appears as a romantic antagonist in Norah and The Nerd, Book 4 of this series, and the protagonists of that book appear briefly in this book as well.

This holiday romance can be enjoyed at any time of the year, but it is an especially fun read during the holiday season.

I rate this book as follows:

Heroine: 4 stars
Hero: 5 stars
Subcharacters: 5 stars
Romance Plot: 5 stars
Coming of Age Subplot: 5 stars
Autistic Brother Subplot: 5 stars
Social Drama Subplot: 5 stars
Writing: 5 stars

Really good story

https://ladiikeiii.wordpress.com/2019...

*bunch of spoilers thrown through this review***

Before I do my review about Trevor and Sabrina, I am trying to figure out who is Delaney lol because I know for a fact Ben was the older guy and the best friend of Gabe and Norah... who ended up with Olivia.... because I read that book about Olivia and the older guy... I guess the author got confused, or maybe Ben was with Delaney before he got with her (Olivia). I’m trying to think if that name sound familiar. But anyways...

On with the story about Sabrina and Trevor, I really had to think about who Trevor was for a minute lol. Until I was like ooh okay that who Trevor was the boy that was taking his autistic brother out for ice cream, I believe in the book with Norah and Gabe...

I still don’t remember Sabrina 🤣 in Bea and CCarter'sbook. I just can’t think of her. I just kept thinking of him as the boy who rides a motorcycle, but it might not be true because I kept thinking he was the trouble maker that Bea met outside of the restaurant that her father was at and Carter had tattoos lol! I don’t think I’m right, but whatever.

So anyways... I felt like Sabrina was petty, snobby, and a horrible stuck up person before she met Trevor. Because she thought she could get out that community service. But it took Trevor to teach her how to be a better person and not a horrible person that she was when she was with her friends. Who I thought was FAKE anyways. They were too snobby to consider Trevor being different from them. They kept calling him a townie... when he’s no different than them only he goes to public school and lives on the other side of town..... In contrast, Trevor and his friends were nice, and Sabrina and her friends were snobby... even Bea and Carter weren’t that horrible as her friends and Sabrina was at that time.

I was glad she took her community service in conSideration and decided to do it. & actually enjoyed and enjoyed being around Trevor and learning that her father didn’t care about her being with Trevor at all... when he came from that side himself.....

P.S. I still want a book with Sidney I believe he’s Gabe little brother. I also want a book with Trevor brother Jamie... his book would be so different but interesting. I’m like so Sidney never got a book, but Olivia did... I so want his story... and even Jamie’s because he seems like a bright boy even if he’s autistic...

Like a Beacon...

-‘Everyone thinks I’m a self-absorbed idiot, even when I try to do something nice, no one thinks I’m serious. I’ve managed to make a friend from across town, and everyone is convinced I’m playing him.”’-

She’s rich, selfish, and entitled. He’s a “townie”, not rich, has loads of responsibilities and extracurricular activities that don’t include socializing and shopping. They both have to do volunteer work and neither of them is thrilled about it.

-‘I’m sick of this place, the accusations, the looks and the snobs. How can I be a better person when no one around me thinks I can do it? Well, there’s one person. One person thinks I can do it.’-

This story has many characters from the previous books in the series woven in, so it’s definitely best to read those first, especially since relationships are established and there are back stories that are important to know about.

-‘...like a beacon, I find myself pulled in another direction. Toward the one person that pushes me to be better.’-

I really enjoy this author’s writing style. Even though she is quite recent to the world of publishing, she has done a great job and she writes very well. Fast paced, clean, romantic, and fun, these are ideal for teens and young adults but the stories are suitable for all ages. I highly recommend this book as well as the others in the series.

I was glad to see a story about Trevor. I loved seeing his side of the story with Norah and how he was taking it.
I didn’t expect a story about Sabrina but I was glad to see that she could have really good character development. This is an enemies to friends to lovers book in my opinion because they really didn’t like each other in the beginning. Her friends didn’t even really like her and she had made enemies with Carter and Bea because of her attitude and how she treated people. She met Trevor though and realized that money and expensive things weren’t the most important thing. She realized how bad her friends were and that she didn’t want to be like that anymore. Again I loved the character development she showed and how she was with Trevor’s brother. I’m also glad everything worked out in the end for everyone and Sabrina didn’t have as much to worry about when it came to her dad.
I almost felt that this story went a little fast but maybe that’s because I was able to read it in a couple days. I love these stories from Anna and I’m sad that the series is over. I’m excited to see what Anna comes out with next!

3.5 stars, rounded up

This was a cute little indie. I’m a sucker for YA Christmas stories, so I probably rated this higher than I should have, but it was so cute. I liked the way both Sabrina and Trevor had issues that they needed to work on. There were some typos, most notably a scene where the character called “Carlos” was written as “Carols” but they didn’t detract from the overall sweet story. I’m glad I finally read it!

I confess first off that I don't usually read high school romance books. I get irritated because I believe they are too young. BUT I have to admit that this one was pretty good. Sabrina was a super annoying spoiled, mean-girl (as she was supposed to be) but she did show signs of really wanting to change. I'm not sure if it would truly happen as quickly as it did in the book but even so, evidence was there to say her desires were real. Trevor was a good, down to earth guy. Loved the way he treated his brother. I felt like if these kids were college age instead of high school they could make a go of a life together. I'd be concerned if they don't go into fields that will make them rich though. It would be hard for Sabrina to not have money even if she wants to use the money for good. When you are used to spending endless money, it is hard to be on the other side.

No sex, language or violence

This is my first read from this author and I have to admit it was good enough that I'll check out her other books. The writing was good, but the reason for the 3 stars is because I think it was a bit too short for the subject and characters. Sabrina was a bit too much and to me, it's not believable that someone like that can change in the course of a month. It looks like this is the 6th book and from some interactions, she must have been in the other books, but to me, that makes it worse. She was really terrible at the beginning, so much that I almost didn't push through.

Like I said, it was just to fast and nothing really happened to make her change except being call spoiled and self-involved. It just needed more to get there.

Wonderful and fun

If you like the 80s movie Pretty in Pink or lesser known Maid to Order you will love this book. Field does a great job with the characters. Hating Sabrina in the beginning was easy. Better than that though, she didn't draw out their insecurities over and over again just to make the book longer. Field shows the obstacles they are up against, has them fight and their moment of clarity and she wraps it up nicely. You know that they will still have problems they will have to work out in their relationship but it's not part of this story.

I personally didn’t think it was possible for Sabrina to change so much over the span of a month and I couldn’t get into the story because of it.

Fun story!

I enjoyed the story. Interesting characters and a good “moral”. Could use some proofreading, there are some errors here and there.

This was so stinking good. You've got this snobby, selfish girl who gets community service for driving with a permit who thinks she can pay her way out of it. Then you have a high school senior who forgot to do his service hours to graduate because he's busy with wrestling and helping him mom raise an autistic teen.

I love when I read a story where I love to make fun of the rich person and their "problems" because I know they will go through a change. This was almost a reversal of the manic pixie dream girl, but the guy learns that it's okay to take time for himself by the end of the book.

They have to help the community center with all of its holiday programs. Lots of festive customs and plenty of angst. It may be a short read, but it feels like a fully developed novel. This is the first I've read in the series and had no issue keeping up. However, it includes characters from earlier books, so I want to read those at some point.

If you want a holiday romance, that'll make you shed a tear but mostly laugh and swoon, this will be great.

A feel good redemption story for Christmas!

I always enjoy a good redemption story - and this is a fun one.

The main characters are likeable. Well, Trevor is, and *eventually* Sabrina is, lol. But it is also true that they are stereotypes, as are most of the other characters.

Actually, I kept thinking of Sabrina as Veronica from the old Archie comics. Of course, I used to love those comics so that actually made it more enjoyable as far as I was concerned - though it kept throwing me every time I was reminded that Sabrina was blond. 😄

What's most important is that the author does provide the needed depth to the main characters, and tells a heart-warming, entertaining story that you will enjoy. The resolution between Trevor & Sabrina is total, Christmas coated, warm fuzziness, and I know I'll be re-reading it!

*Clean romance level: sweet kisses

It is strange to read a Christmas story when it is still 90 degrees outside, but I enjoyed this early trip to the holiday season. I loved Trevor in Norah and the Nerd and had hoped that he would get his own book at some point, and here it is! Sabrina was such an annoying character in Bea and the Bad Boy that I didn't think she would ever be redeemed, but here is the perfect story that shows how far these two characters have come. Trevor is struggling with losing Norah and Sabrina is struggling with the realization that she doesn't necessarily like who she has become. Both end up with a volunteer project that brings them together in a way that neither expected. This is a heartwarming and sweet book that definitely sparked some Christmas spirit in my heart.

This was a cute and fun read, a feel-good enemies-to-more story with a healthy dose of Christmas spirit. It's nice to reconnect with Norah, Gabe, and the rest of the Ocean Grove posse, too.
(Disclaimer: I'm reading the series out of publishing order, so I have yet to meet "mean girl" Sabrina. After reading her redemption story, I'm actually looking forward to getting to know her former, meaner version. )

Swoon worthy indeed. When you start caring about a bratty teen girl, you know you've found a good book. Read this in one sitting because I couldn't stop. I cried a little. so freaking good. now I have to read the After Christmas book and the others in this series. Ugh, I want to read all her books now.

Super cute YA

Sabrina is a spoiled girl with no thought beyond herself. Trevor only thinks about other people. It’s an interesting combination when they collide. Filled with service, cocoa and Santa Claus, it’s a fun read for your holiday season.
