The Art of Murder (Jordan Jenner Mysteries Book #2) by J.S. Strange is the second cozy P.I. mystery featuring Jordan Jenner. The mysteries are set in and around Cardiff, Wales with a gay male protagonist which makes this series unique and the author’s writing style makes it an intriguing mystery read.

Jordan’s brother, Ashley has shown up unexpectedly from his home in Australia and tells Jordan he is in trouble, but he will not reveal what is the problem.

P.I. Jordan Jenner is hired by artist Xander Draper. He has been receiving threats from a group called The Dirty Dollys. They are an anonymous group that disrupt showings, blackmail and threaten new artists that they feel have been artificially pushed into stardom using illegal means.
Xander’s dead body is displayed in one of his last exhibits.

Jordan and his brother are being threatened and followed. Is it for the paintings Xander gave them before he was murdered? Did the Dirty Dollys kill Xander or are there other enemies that Jordan needs to find. And what secrets is Ashley hiding?

Jordan has several suspects, but will he be able to solve this case before they come for him?

I really enjoyed this second mystery in this series. Jordan became more fully fleshed and vulnerable in this book. We see him start to let people in and try to consciously change his isolation. (I am still cheering for Lloyd.) The mystery was well paced and kept me guessing. All the information about illegal money and publicity tied to the rise of an art world star was interesting and kept me engrossed in the story.

I recommend this book, series and author! I hope I will be able to follow Jordan on many more adventures in the future.

I enjoyed this, but I liked the first one much better. The author mentioned that this book was harder for him to write and I figure that means he had less time for polish. The writing definitely has some awkward spots. The action and romance scenes were particularly rough. I liked how the first book had very little romance and I'm wondering if Strange got criticized for that. There was a lot more flirting and checking people out in this book. Same goes for the action, the first book was much more of a cozy with very little action; this book had quite a few "action" scenes in which Jordan acted pretty hysterically... which... yeah... I mean, he's a PI, I would have expected him to be a bit more collected.
On the other hand, the author did do a good job of making Jordan more vulnerable in this book. I mean, I liked him in the first book but that is probably because I can also be rather aloof and find it hard to let people in.
I do hope there will be another book in this series.

~ 4.5 stars ~

This second book in the Jordan Jenner Mysteries Series was as interesting as the first book, although I figured out the 'who' around the 50% mark. But the 'how' and 'why' remained unclear to me until the very end, so it was still exciting to find out what brought these murders on. Speaking of murders, this book was a lot darker, grittier, bloodier, and more action-packed than the first book so I'm not sure 'cozy' is the right word to describe this mystery. Not that I minded.

In stark contrast, Jordan appeared to be somehow softer in this book than in the first one. He still has his flaws and some of his actions were unreasonably stupid, which, oddly enough, just made me like him more because it made him human and not just a caricature of a hard-ass PI. The author also shows us a more emotional and vulnerable side of Jordan while he's dealing with his feelings and his hurt toward his brother who once was his best friend during their childhood until he moved to Australia years ago.

I enjoyed this new book in the series and I'm looking forward to finding out what the author has in store for Jordan next. Even though I know this isn't a romance, my romantic heart can't help but hope for a blooming love story - maybe with a certain police officer named Mark?

I enjoyed the first book but this one is really really gripping.

From the outset you know you are in for a treat as Jordan returns from a holiday with his brother Ashley and he is convinced he is being followed.Ashley appears to be hiding something but Jordan is quickly distracted from this when he is approached by Xander,a successful artist who is worried that his work is going to be stolen by The Dirty Dollys who steal artists work then blackmail them.

Xander meets a very tragic end and Jordan begins to find himself drawn deeper and in more danger than before.

I love books about Art and also a good crime so a combination of the two with Jordan a character that I am really enjoying reading about and getting to know.

He is a complicated character and his flaws make him all the more endearing.

I read this was billed as a cosy crime and I think the author has definitely upped the darker side in this book which I enjoyed.

I hope there will be more in the series as I think that Jordan is a breath of fresh air and I love the setting in Cardiff where I will be visting soon. Who knows maybe in the future there will be Jordan Jenner Crime tours around the city !

Although for me it was clear early on who the culprit was and somehow in the end I had a problem with timelines (when the solution was presented), nevertheless this was a very entertaining read. I especially liked that Jordan's personal life got more room in the story. I'm already waiting for the next book!

I've yet to read Murder on the Rocks, the first in the series, so starting out, I wasn't sure what to expect. Straight away this is easily picked up from book 2, you aren't overloaded with book 1 events so that's always a good start when beginning a book part way through a series.

Described in the Blurb as cosy Welsh mystery... this is a book that has its moments and isn’t all that cosy..

Set in the murky world of Art, Xander Draper, a renowned young artist seeks help from Jordan Jenner, he thinks he is being hunted by The Dirty Dolly’s, a group hellbent on causing disruptions in the Art World. When Xander is found Violently stabbed to death in a cage before his entrance to a new Art show, Jordan becomes embroiled in a cat and mouse chase with the bad guys, who it seems, know his name. How and why do they know who Jordan is?

In the midst of the investigation, Jordan also has to deal with brother Ashley, returning out of the blue, he is carrying a secret...

With help from the local police, Jordan begins his investigations.

This is a very clever mystery, full of plot twists, it's a real traditional mystery, echos of Agatha Christie and the like have been mentioned in regards to J.S Strange and I would suggest this is an author who is growing toward such praise.

Paced perfectly to keep you turning pages as the mystery unravels itself, I really liked this setting in Wales and premise of the dark and mysterious art world, dastardly enemies and foul play afoot, this was a cracking read and highly recommended, J.S strange has a talent for mystery and I will be picking up book 1 and then following Jordan Jenner's future adventures closely.

Is Jordan Jenner the new Super sleuth of our generation? I think he might just be...

Highly recommended

This is a fantastic successor to the first novel in series; a twisted tale of death and deception which is stunning throughout.

Jordan Jenner antennae is twitching as he returns to Wales with his brother Ashley and he notices they are being followed, and have been during their trip to Amsterdam. Who and why are the burning questions? With his new investigation thrusting him into the art world, the waters are most definitely muddied . . .

With a fascinating and riveting look into art and artists, this is a gripping read and a great second in series! With a great mix of professional and personal, the story kept my attention all the way through. Could I work it out? Not a hope - however, when all was revealed it made perfect sense! J. S. Strange is a relatively new author but he has a firm grip on how to create an intricate mystery, revealing just enough to get the reader hooked but not so much that the conclusion is obvious. I particularly like the fact that whilst the main character is gay, it's just one part of the novel and isn't made to be the main focus. Jordan is a truly likeable detective, displaying human traits just like the rest of us, but taking his investigation to the next level regardless. The subject matter is something I know nothing about, and I was intrigued to learn all I did about the skulduggery! Complex and interesting, this is a terrific read and, I hope, the second instalment in a series which has more books to follow. I'm very happy to recommend this one to mystery lovers, and give it a firm four stars. (less)

The Art of Murder is a riveting edition to the Jordan Jenner series. I read the first book in the Jordan Jenner series and really enjoyed it; however, I actually liked this book a little better than the first in the series. The writing seems to be more tight knit and even more fast paced. I was also intrigued by the fact that it took place in the underbelly of the art world. I enjoy art, but I know nothing about it.

My favorite mystery series are the ones in which the reader has the opportunity to bond with the main character. After reading the first book, I felt connected to Jordan. I was interested to find out the answer to the book’s mystery, but I was even more interested to find out what happened to Jordan. Will he ever open himself up and allow himself to form lasting friendships? Why is his brother acting so weird?

Technically, Jordan is my second favorite character. My number one favorite character in this series is Oscar the cat. I was glad to see that he made a reappearance in this book.

Even if you haven’t read the first book in the series, you can still enjoy The Art of Murder. I only have one word of caution: the back cover describes this book as a “cozy mystery set in Wales.” I disagree. If you are looking for a “cozy mystery,” then this might not be the book for you. This book has scenes that are much more gory than a “cozy mystery.” I would describe it instead as a “classic mystery with a touch of noir.”

A murdered artist. A brother with a deadly secret. A group intent on killing. The Art of Murder is the second in the Jordan Jenner Mysteries series, a cosy murder mystery set in Wales.

Although part of a series this can be read and enjoyed as a stand-alone book which is what I have done.

The art world is something I have limited knowledge of but Strange helps to bring it alive through this book. He convincingly showed the talent, the envy, bitterness and the wealth combined with greed and betrayal.

Because this is cosy crime the murders aren’t told in too much detail - good if you’re a bit squeamish.

I felt like Strange brought Cardiff alive to the reader - having visited a few times he captures it well within the book. It’s great that a detective mystery isn’t set in London or America as is often the case.

Private investigator Jordan Jenner is an openly gay man and I think it’s brilliant to have so many openly gay characters within the book. The sex scenes are tastefully written and not too x rated.

It’s a great whodunnit murder mystery with some good twists and turns along the way.

The dynamic between the two Jenner brothers was an interesting addition to the storyline - what is Ashley running from?

I really enjoyed this well-paced mystery and read the whole book in just two sittings.

A murder investigation and a PI Jordan Jenner at the helm.

Xandar, a famous artist, was worried from a gang’s threat, the Dirty Dollys. He hired Jordan to investigate. In the art show, Xandar was found dead. Now Jordan had to find the killer.

My first book by author J. S. Strange, the story had twists and turns with the killer being one step ahead. Jordan was a fun PI, sweet in his ways, but extremely instinctive. I liked how he knew when someone was following him. He showed signs of a cop, though I would have liked if he were tougher, since he was investigating murders.

Dark was the path the art world was set in. Fast paced with varied characters, I kept looking at everyone with suspicion. I liked how Jordan assisted the cops, the team felt cohesive and trustworthy. Having not read book 1, I didn’t have a problem in following book 2.

The atmosphere in the entire book was more old-fashioned, there was an authenticity in the plot which had more of Agatha Christie-is vibe going on with clues and suspects and careful investigation. I found this book to be an interesting investigative series. Though called a cozy, there was nothing cozy about it, no recipe, no cakes and pastries, though there was a cute cat.

A fun whodunit, I would say

3.5 stars. I enjoyed the first book more then this one. I just really didn't care about the Dirty Dollys and why they were doing what they were doing. I also didn't much care for Ashley. I knew he was up to no good from the moment that we met him but didn't know what he was up to. I have no clue why Ben would even care to stay with him. I didn't like Tomos either and really think that Jordan should either end up with Mark or Lloyd. I also would like for Jordan to get hooked up with someone, nice.

The Art of Murder is the second book in the Jordon Jenner cosy crime series and this was the novel I preferred. I had struggled to warm to Jordan in the first book, finding him a bit aloof but much of his vulnerability is explained in this book, especially with the bullying he received at school. I could see his loyalty, his dedication to finding answers and how much he liked helping others. I enjoyed seeing his friendships develop and as in book one his adoration of his cat Oscar.

The art world is something I know nothing about. The author convincingly showed the talent, the envy, bitterness and the wealth combined with greed which like many things destory what it touches. These were not characters I cared for, the world they lived in seemed fake and insincere.

Because this is cosy crime there wasn’t much detail about the murders. There was some intimidation but It was more about the effect on Jordan, his family and friends. How the sorrow and fear combined with suspicion of most who were known to the victim.

These books don’t need to be read in order, the previous case is mentioned but not in detail. If you want to see the character development though, I recommend it. I am looking forward to reading book three.

After thoroughly enjoying Jordan Jenner’s first outing, Murder on the Rocks, I couldn’t resist joining Panther’s tour for book number two – The Art of Murder.

When Jordan is hired by an artist Xander (who is scared for his life) to find out the identities of members of an illusive gang he quickly discovers there is more at stake than he first realised. Xander’s body is found displayed as an exhibit Jordan suddenly becomes a target himself. Parallel to this, his brother’s return and silence regarding the trouble he is in makes Jordan begin to suspect his brother is in too deep and in danger.

Once again Strange has written a fabulous cosy mystery with diverse characters and a fast paced plot. I must admit, as much as I loved book one, I felt the writing in book 2 has really matured and Strange seems to display more confidence. Murder on the Rocks was great but The Art of Murder is brilliant.

I love that we learn more about Jenner as a character in this novel and he seems to be a little less introvert than previously. There is now a stellar cast of supporting characters surrounding Jordan and for me personally I felt that he was learning to trust these and let them into his life a little more. By the end of this novel I became fully invested in him as a character.

The plot itself is reminiscent of a classic Who Dun It? We have a murder, a cast of characters and a whole bunch of clues and all we need to do is use them to eliminate the murderer and solve the mystery. It’s such a fun novel to ‘play’ along with.

Great for cosy mystery or classic who dun it fans and a series I am eagerly anticipating the return of.

If there's one thing that this Ginger Book Geek likes, it's discovering new authors. J. S. Strange is certainly a new author for me but it's safe to say that after enjoying reading 'The Art Of Murder' as much as I did, I will definitely be reading more of this author's work in the future. I thoroughly enjoyed ''The Art Of Murder' but more about that in a bit.
It didn't take me long at all to get into this story. In fact by the time I had read the first dozen pages or so, I knew that this was going to be one very good read. I must be psychic because that is exactly what happened. I couldn't read the book over the course of a day because I had a couple of appointments, but I managed to read it over the course of a few days. I first picked the book up when I had half an hour to fill in but I became so absorbed in the story that the originally intended half an hour stretched into well over an hour. The pages turned so quickly that it was almost as if they were turning themselves and then all too quickly I reached the end of the story, which I was disappointed about. I don't mean that I was disappointed with the way in which the story concluded but I was enjoying the author's writing style, the characters and the storylines so much that I just wanted the story to continue for longer than it did.
'The Art Of Murder' is well written. I love the fact that the story is set in Wales as most of the books I read are set in England or in the United States. I also have family who live in the Cardiff area so it was nice to read a story set where they live. The author drew me into the story from the start and I totally immersed myself in the story to the extent that I felt as though I was part of the story myself and I began to 'interact' with the book. Yes I know that this is a work of fiction but I find that if I enjoyed a book as much as I enjoyed reading 'The Art Of Murder', I tend to 'live' the story as if it were real and that sometimes means that I 'talk' to the characters as if they could hear me. I loved feeling as though I was part of the story and part of the investigation. When I reached the end of the book I felt a bit sad that I had to say goodbye to Jordan Jenner. I soon cheered up when I realised that I had the first story in the series to catch up on.
In short, I thoroughly enjoyed reading 'The Art Of Murder' and I would definitely recommend this book to other readers. I will certainly be reading more from this author in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 4* out of 5*.

This is #2 in the Jordan Jenner series by J.S. Strange, but can easily be read as a stand-alone.

Jordan Jenner is a private investigator, who works closely with the local police in Wales. His brother Ashley has come home from Australia, leaving his boyfriend Ben behind, he says he’s in trouble, but doesn’t elaborate any further.

On a trip to Amsterdam, Jordan notices they are being followed, even on to their plane home. He lets the police know and wonders why….is Ashley in more trouble than he’s letting on?

Jordan is then approached by Xander Draper a well known artist, he wants Jordan to help identify and stop a group calling themselves Dirty Dolly’s, who are stealing artworks and blackmailing other artists… is Ashley somehow linked to this?

When Xander’s body is found, things get dark….will Jordan be able to find the killer and the reasons why? And why do they want him dead too?

A perfectly paced cosy mystery on the slightly darker side, set in the Art world with dodgy dealings, Murder and a twisty mystery. Jordan is a great, likeable character, flawed and human but so committed to finding the truth. If you like a classic style murder mystery in the vein of Agatha Christie and Joesephine Tey, then you’ll love this. Brilliant.

Thank you to Panther Publishing for the opportunity to take part in this blog tour and a free copy of the ebook. This is my honest and unbiased review.

*I received a free copy of this book with thanks to the author and to Emma Welton of damppebbles blog tours. The decision to review and my opinions are my own.*

The Art of Murder is the second in the Jordan Jenner Mystery series, but you don’t need to have read Murder on the Rocks to be able to pick this one up running as the plot and characters stand fully alone.

Jordan finds himself embroiled in an art-world controversy as a rebellion against newly-established artists by a mysterious group called The Dirty Dollys turns threatening, then murderous. While the police focus on the murder, Jordan tries to keep his head on the case he was hired to solve: uncovering the Dollys and taking them down. It’s not that easy though, as all painted roads seem to lead back to poor dead Xander Draper and, more unsettling for Jordan, his own front door.

There is a really nice balance here between the personal and professional, as we follow Jordan’s struggles to open up, trust and let someone in to his emotional life, whilst simultaneously juggling a dangerous case. While the last book dealt with his family history, this story features more family present, as his brother has ties to the art world through his job, but refuses to talk about anything – work-related or personal – leading Jordan to worry on just about every front.

The plot is twisty and well-paced, and had an ideal number of suspects – enough to be misleading, but not too many that it got confusing. I had a few well-founded suspicions as I went along, but the climactic reveal still managed to surprise me. Similarly, I found it fascinating that Jordan is clearly ready for a deeper relationship, and surrounded by a selection of eligible, attractive, interested men, yet I had no idea who (if any of them!) might turn into a long-term love interest and who was destined to remain a friend. Would it be Lloyd, who he has history and chemistry with? Mark, because they got off on the wrong foot initially and we’ve all seen how that goes? Or hunky newcomer Tomas, who seems to be just what our hero needs, at just the time he’s ready to open up to it? I’m just as invested in Jordan’s personal happiness as I am in the success of his investigations!

It’s the main character’s complexity, combined with the classic murder-mystery style plotting, which really draw you in to this series and keep you wanting more. And Oscar the cat, of course, who puts in yet another adorable cameo appearance and reveals Jordan’s softer side. I really enjoyed this more vulnerable Jordan and look forward to seeing what happens next for him.

Jordan cast a quick glance behind him. The person was there, walking at a steady pace, sunglasses on even though the April weather outside was cloudy. Jordan had spotted this man in Amsterdam. He had been in every museum they had gone to. At night, he had walked the red-light district, blending in with the crowds. In restaurants, he had been only a table or two away from theirs.
Now, he had been on their flight. He’d sat at the front of the plane, twisting in his seat to look at Jordan.
Jordan had to get out.

This is the second book in the Jordan Jenner series, which takes places in Cardiff, Wales. Never having visited there, I am intrigued by the locale as much as the plot. In this case, the locale appears to be very gay-friendly and a lovely place to live! Jordan is a hot, twenty-something gay male who works as a PI. The people he works with on the Cardiff police force (Harry, Lloyd, and Mark) are identical to him. They are all around the same age, extremely handsome gay men who would love to get into Jordan's bed. Actually, only Lloyd has experienced that pleasure so far!
The chief detective is Vanessa, a lesbian so essentially Jordan exists in a very gay ghetto.

The first book was centered around the book publishing world, but Jordan's father and deceased mother played a huge part in the plot. In this book, we switch to the art world but the family aspect is covered by Jordan's also hot gay brother. I am anxious to see how the family will be represented in the next novel!

Of course, the art world is fully populated with even more sexy gay men, including the son of a suspect who Jordan falls for, which seems to disappoint Mark terribly.

This book is far more deadlier and gruesome that the first. These are not cozy mysteries in any way! Bodies pile up in somewhat lurid murders and Jordan is in several very close calls, which also did not occur previously. In addition, there are a few erotic scenes throughout the novel.

The plot is very well written, lots of complexity and very clear descriptions of the characters involved. The description of life as an artist, both for those just starting out and those who are established, is very realistic. The author certainly did his research!

The book kept calling me back to it which attests to its intrigue and the author's talents. However, as a gay man I found the fact that Jordan appears to be living in a young gay man's paradise which isn't very realistic. Finding so many LGBT people in the police department, even in Wales, is a bit of a stretch. I would like to see Jordan wrestle with that aspect in the future. He already is having a lot of difficulty in actually loving anyone, including his family. Prior to his hookup with Tomas, he preferred to use anonymous sex encounters to satisfy his needs. Given that Jordan is such a very talented PI, analyzing people, finding clues, doing research, it seems odd that he is is so immature on his own personal level. He needs to grow up a bit in that area so his detecting skills can match his life skills a bit better.

I am looking forward to book three in the series. I noticed that the author has written another series as well and I intend to check that out as a comparison.

Another exciting mystery!

Jordan Jenner is just your average PI trying to get on with life. But, plot twists and murders get in his way. This is a great series and not to be missed by those of us that enjoy them.

Read the full book review here.

One of the greatest artists of his time is dead. Not just dead, murdered. Horribly and very unexpectedly, at his own art show. Immediately after, there are people running about, police on the scene, and a shot is fired at the private investigator hired by the late artist. Then begins the unraveling of a huge mess within the art world, more murders, and finally our hero Jordan Jenner coming through.

Xander Draper is an enigma of a man. He seemed even more so after his death. His paintings used to fetch top dollars before his murder. After his sensational murder, their prices sky-rocketed. Everybody is after them.

I loved this book. The setting was unlike any I’ve encountered before. Art. Usually such thrillers are set in the background of mafia or business, but The Art of Murder, like the title says, has art. A lot of it. I am not an artist, and yet the descriptions made me imagine artworks vividly!

The thriller part is really good too. There are incidents occurring at regular intervals, and Jordan’s brother Ashley adds to the drama. The writing is tight, our characters, especially the main ones, are superbly profiled. I wanted to meet all of them- Xander in his studio, Jordan at his house, Tomos at the farm, Cai at his clothes store, the Landalff Castle. The storyline is very logical, doesn’t waver at all, and was easy to follow.

I’d started expecting the name of the culprit before it was revealed, but was never sure. That’s how it is with thriller novels. You think it’s Cai, but it turns out to be Jordan. Oops, I hope I haven’t given too much away. Anyway, guessing the culprit still didn’t prepare me for the twist that Strange has included at the end of the book!

Did I mention dear Jordan is gay? No? That was a surprisingly good plus point for me. It was fun to read about his escapades.

So if you’re a suspense/thriller/mystery or LGBT fan, give this book a go. I promise you won’t regret it. I finished it in a day.

The Art of Murder is book two in the Jordan Jenner Mysteries by J. S. Strange. PI Jordan Jenner caught a new case to find out who threatening Artist Xander Draper. However, before Jordan could get answers, Xander dies. To complicate the whole situation, Jordan's brother Ashley came home from Australia, scare and secretive. After Xander murder, Jordan thought at first that his brother Ashley was the murder. However, that was not the case. The readers of The Art of Murder will continue to follow PI Jordan Jenner to find out what happens.

The Art of Murder is the second book I have read by J. S. Strange. I enjoy reading books by J. S. Strange. I love the way J. S Strange portrays his characters and their interaction throughout this book. I engage with the plot of The Art of Murder from the first page and continue until the last page. The Art of Murder is well written and researched by J. S. Strange. I love J. S. Strange's description of The Art of Murder settings that allowed me to imagine being part of this book's plot.

The readers of The Art of Murder will learn about corruption in the art world. Also, the readers of The Art of Murder see the devastation that hatred has on a family.

I recommend this book.

Another 3.5*, rounded up as I quite like the series.
Poor Jordan and his decisions - hope the psychic is right!
Picking up pretty much from the end of book 1, Jordan and brother Ashley arrive back in Cardiff, right into the middle of intrigue.
I did wonder why Ashley was so evasive, and we do find out eventually - though Jordan needs to look under his nose at times!
The daring murder of Xander catapults the mystery more, Dirty Dollys, paintings giving clues and Jordan’s cast of admirers grows.
Again, it is a bit telling at times but I did enjoy - can’t say I’ve seen such activity at Castle Coch, but not been at night 😁 and only visited sporadically.
Will be looking our for more Jordan Jenner

Another good instalment in this series. I liked the mystery although this time I did guess quite early on who the killer was.
Again very little romance for Jordan, although I think he would be good with Lloyd.
At the end, the author did say Jordan was talking to them about more aDventures, so hopefully there will be another book in this great series.

Kept me guessing throughout. However, having read way too many mysteries, I began looking for the least likely character to commit the killings and I was right! What I didn't know was the why and that was satisfyingly explained. Will I read another of the Jordan Jenner mysteries? Sure will! I look forward to more of Jordan's character development and romantic trysts.

The Art of Murder is book #2 in Jordan Jenner Mysteries and is good to be read as a standalone.

PI Jordan has a new case, to identify the culprits of the gang Dirty Dollys who are sabotaging the artworks of major players in the industry. When Xander Draper approaches Jordan for help, little did he expect the turmoil of having the client murdered in front of his eyes, being shot at and hounded at his home. Stalked and harassed, Jordan’s resolve develops that much stronger to unearth the agenda of the Dirty Dollys.

Fast paced and exciting The Art Of Murder takes the reader back to the classical sleuthing techniques. The questions that lead the detective from one puzzle to another, the painstaking weeding of important details from the mish mash of debris being strewn about, following instincts that may land one in trouble, the author has plotted a good whodunnit which keeps the reader guessing till the end.

Jordan was a wonderful character, the ruminations on his flaws making him so endearing and loving. I do wish however that the action scenes had him coming out as a bit stronger as one would expect from a PI whose job is to face dangerous situations. I was under the impression that cozy mysteries have amateur sleuths so hate to classify this in that genre as the central protagonist is a PI but for the absence of gore, YES, the Art of Murder provides a comfortable read.

I would like to thank Emma at Damppebbles for providing a copy of this book as part of the blog tour which unfortunately got canceled.

3.5*

This is the second book in the series of Jordan Jenner Mysteries and the author has come up with a really good storyline when an artist, Xander Draper, is violently murdered at his own exhibition!

There is not only Murder, attempted murder – of our lead protagonist Jordan, no less! – but also money laundering, blackmail and jealousy. Billed as a cosy murder it nonetheless has some pretty tense moments and some quite brutal murders but there is little descriptive gore.

The relationship between Jordan Jenner, who is a Private Investigator (PI), and the police is interesting. It’s friendly and supportive. Obviously the previous case, in which Jordan was officially brought in on the police investigation, has helped build trust and they are willing to work with Jordan again. However, it’s not on an official basis this time. Their investigations work in parallel but when useful they work together. In this instance it’s just as well that’s the case for Jordan who has several close shaves in this book.

Jordan Jenner is a sort of burgeoning, slimmer, Welsh version of a Poirot! He’s a bit constrained, keeping his distance between possible friendships and relationships. He is openly gay, it isn’t an issue, and he’s perfectly happy in himself as he should be. Perhaps just being a bit careful of not getting hurt. It was great to come across a main character who is comfortable with themselves and with so few hang ups. He’s a likeable character determined to find out whodunnit, especially when the victim was his original customer!

A well paced, enjoyable story with plenty of well drawn characters and heart thumping moments.

Thanks

Although this is the second book in the Jordan Jenner Mysteries it can be easily read as a stand alone. The characters are well developed, with snippets of key information from the previous book thrown into the story line so that you fully understand their journey and don't feel like you have missed anything.

I loved the concept of the Dollys, although I didn't agree with their methodology; who wouldn't be annoyed if they felt someone had reached their fame and fortune via a shortcut or an unfair advantage? This element alone made the novel feel very realistic and I was determined to know who was behind the Dollys and how far they had gone to disrupt the lives of their targeted artists.

I also loved the complicated relationship between Jordan and his brother Ashley. The Jenner brothers made the story line all the more intriguing and I was desperate to get to the bottom of Ashley's secret for coming back to his home town. Although I did guess who was behind the murders, there were enough red-herrings along the way to make me question and re-examine my initial thoughts. I was thrown off track a few times.

I enjoyed the setting, especially as I had visited a few places mentioned in the book. The art world was another fascinating element to the novel, along with the corruption and bitterness towards the artists. I particularly liked the way Jordan was able to work alongside the police, rather than against them. There was a mutual understanding here which you don't always find in novels of this kind.

This cosy mystery allows you to get sucked in to the story line, keeps you second guessing yourself and is a brilliant easy read.
