I thought this book was about just researching a person who lived at the time of the US Civil War, but it was about researching a Civil War soldier. The book initially didn't tell me much that was new to me. It did go into detail about regimental histories which I found helpful and will have to refer to in order to learn more about my ancestors experiences in the military during the Civil War. The other item that was helpful was a small tidbit about state militias. It said that those records are held at state archives

This is the 1973 edition, so it is out of date, but I was able to find a lot on the Web because of the book. I recommend the book if you can find a current edition.
