A very thorough and informative bio of the great filmmaker David Wark Griffith. I loved the level of detail plus that it was sympathetic, but not too sympathetic, to the great film pioneer who also had some flaws.

The level of detail however means the book is not for everyone. The audience is strictly early cinema buffs.

Dated and sprinkled with errors, this is still in some ways a preferable Griffith biography to the more recent one by Schickel; the latter is more detailed and benefits from recent film discoveries, but is bilious and opinionated. Henderson's approach is measured and balanced, neither a white-wash nor a hatchet job. A book (or series of books) entirely worthy of this film pioneer has yet to be written.

Lots of information about Griffith's movies, but I still don't feel that I know the man at all.
