Dan Fuller is a masterful storyteller after the fashion of Louis L’Amour. Following the stories through the eyes of twelve-year-old David put me in mind of True Grit with the narrative from the girl’s point of view.
Seeing Dave grow up fast under the firm hand of John Beck, a gunman and his late father’s best friend gave us a peek into the culture and manners of the time and place. Colorado was a rugged land and Dave and his sister Jenny rise to the challenge as John trains them in every area of

This is the first book I have read by Mr. Fuller and it won't be the last.
An awesome read. Outstanding writing. The storyline was great and the characters were amazing.
I did not want to put it down and then I did not want it to end.
Jenny and Dave were left orphans when someone shot their father in the back. He had gone to town to send a letter.
A neighbor Maxwell was very evil and was trying to run off or kill off all around him so he could claim their land.

This is an amazing story that pulls you into the wild west and takes your imagination over like a storm. I reveled in the author reading this book in our writer's group. Was like sitting beside the radio and fireplace with a cozy blanket.
This tale is packed with sweetness of a teen girl, the likable and energetic young boy and loads of action by the hero. Great story with lots of chuckles as well as out-loud laughs.
I recommend this book to anyone from ages five to a hundred and five.

A "rights of passage" type book. It is extremely well crafted. You live it with them. A very tough time, where standing against evil could cost you everything. If you survived, it changed so many things. Stays with you after you finished reading it.

Dan Fuller has done a tremendous job of capturing the spirit of the Old West in his debut novel, A Rifle by the Door. Dave (age 12) and Jenny (age 18) Foster find themselves orphaned in a strange new land when their father is murdered. Before his untimely death, Jim Foster was able to mail a message to his old friend, John Beck—a man who has become a bounty hunter and gunman in the years since they last saw each other. When John Beck arrives, he finds two children wholly unprepared for life in t ...more

It took a great deal of courage and determination to create a ranch out of the wilderness during the days of the Old West. Life was tough and you had to plan ahead to survive. Young Jenny and Dave Foster are determined to continue their father's dream after he was murdered, but they couldn't have done it without the help of John Beck, a friend of their father's who was also a gunfighter. Read their story. I think you'll find it as engaging as I did

Marvelous.

I enjoyed this book tremendously. No slow spots, no disappointments, just good entertainment start to finish. I'm looking forward to more by Dan Fuller. Thanks.

Fuller pens a good story line that is easy to follow. At times the transiti0n are a bit choppy and some passages a little wordy. The epilogue is well assembled and ties up all the loose ends with efficiency. The title seems loosely connected to the work, though with a little contemplation on the part of the reader it is reconciled. The cover image does not capture the image the writer establishes, but that is a subjective observation. Nice story of perseverance, preparation, and hope.

This is an excellent story set in old west in San Juan Mountains just after the Civil War. The Foster family had moved there to start a ranch. Their mother had passed away, Jenny, the daughter was eighteen and Davy, twelve when their father was shot as he went into town.

The air is cool, winter is coming the children need to prepare for the coldest winter in their lives storing up food supplies, and chopping wood also learning to live alone and doing for themselves. This story is writ
