I love Christmas. There, I’ve said it and I’ll get that out of the way! However, what is it that I love? The sparkliness? Yes. The presents? Well, I guess so, I mean, I wouldn’t turn down a carefully chosen gift from Tiffany for example. Mulled wine and a mince pie? Yes to the mulled wine but let me check your pastry prowess out before I bite. The main thing it means to me and to so many others, is being together with those you love and like. Christmas past was racing through whichever house we ...more

"But there must be something more to all this than just marketing and merchandise. For all the differences of our time which pull people apart, something about Christmas now seems to bring us together. As one of the most sacred days in the Christian calendar seeps into other cultures’ diaries as a special date, it calls on us to consider just what makes it so powerful for so many around the world.”

A Christmas book of a different flavour, an honest collection of essays from an array of people

Thought provoking... poignant read

To be completely honest, when I first saw this book it didn't draw me in, I didn't really look past the cover. On seeing Greg do an interview on loose women promoting this book, I then went back to look further. I know you shouldn't, but often we do judge books merely by its cover, and we shouldn't as some often surprise, (as can be the case with people).

It feels a book you should read on the build up or soon after Christmas, it'll make you reflect on your own

Firstly, I love how buying this book helps charity, that’s one of the main reasons why I bought this book (and also to gift as a present, but I couldn’t resist having a sneak peak and then before I knew it I had read the entire thing).

It’s not my style of book personally, but I did enjoy reading some of the contributions especially learning about different cultures and some contributions serving as a harsh reminder of a world that has been torn by wars, homelessness, estrangements from families

It only takes a few hours to complete, but this eclectic collection of personal essays provides a perfect antidote if you are struggling to identify and relate to the essence of Christmas. It really is a diverse collection ranging from the rich and famous to the most marginalised, from the devout to the non believer, from Hollywood to the refugee camp. Compiled and curated by Emma Thompson and her husband Greg Wise, all the proceeds go to the charity Crisis which offers all year round education, ...more

I was very kindly given an e-arc of this book through Netgalley & Quercus Books.

This is the perfect festive read for anybody who wants to feel a bit better about an increasingly commercialized season. With contributions from a variety of people, including actors, musicians, activists, refugees and more, it collates together peoples memories of Christmas - both good and bad -and how the season has stayed with them as they've grown up into adulthood and created their own traditions for

I am thankful that the proceeds go to a wonderful cause! But, I guess I had a misconception of what this book was actually about. Seeing the previews of the movie, I was so excited, and wanted to read it. And, I thought is was written, by Emma Thompson which had me overly-pumped, because I love her!(She does have a story in the book). I can say that the different views, and opinions about each person's Christmas memories were interesting though. But, I did feel a lot of the stories teetered on ...more

This is a collection of short pieces of writing about the meaning of Christmas, by many people from diverse walks of life. It is not a religious book (I wasn’t expecting it to be), and in spite of the diversity of people, and their attitudes towards Christmas, one thing shines brightly through - the true meaning of Christmas. The importance of time for family - genetic or found - and kindness towards others. In the world as it is now, these things are so important to remember. I highly recommend ...more

I understood why this book existed and the point that both Emma Thompson and Greg Wise were trying to get across but I just found it a bit too depressing and realistic and I wanted a bit more wonder and excitement around this holiday. The reason for this book is important but it's a book that you pick up in the new year after all the celebrations have occurred as this is definitely a book that makes you lose some cheer and joy when reading it.

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for

Brilliant, moving and poignant this collection of essays highlights what Christmas should be about - not commercial stuff that we eventually just get bored off but the meaning behind Christmas. This collection also talks about hard topics to talk about such as poverty, war, trauma and exploitation. This is a definite must read and important that people read this so that they are able to affect change.

A sweet book where various people recount their memories of Christmas, what it means to them. It is just the thing to sit by a fire with a glass of red and a cheeky mince pie to get you in the mood for Christmas, especially if you are feeling somewhat ambivalent about the holiday season. I think we put a lot of pressure on Christmas to be perfect, but as these stories remind us, it is not so much about what we do at Christmas, but the people we spend it with.

A Christmas read that reminds what Christmas is and how different remember or live this festivity.
It's a perfect Christmas gift, highly recommended.

Cute and heartfelt little essays on what Christmas means to a handful of celebrities. I read a few and I’m sure I’ll dive back in throughout the Month. A tie in to the movie last Christmas and the proceeds benefit charity.

It' a beautiful and honest collection of mannnny many voices on Christmas, nonetheless Greg and Emma found a key essence on what all humans really need, and where we are currently going wrong with Christmas. It's thought-provoking and beautiful. Intelligent. You find funny stories, sad ones, meaningful anecdotes... I am sure everybody can somehow find him-/herself in this book.

What do we all feel about Christmas? Why is the suicide rate especially high during Christmas time, and the next month
