4.5/5 stars for this gripping Nordic series launch! What do you get when two of Norway's beloved crime writers team up? The answer, as it turns out, is this gripping procedural-meets-serial killer thriller. In Death Deserved, a serial killer is targeting celebrities in Norway, and the police find themselves in a race against the clock to track the killer down before he strikes again. Death Deserved is a fantastic launch of a new Norwegian crime series, and it's co-written by authors with ...more

Holy flying …. kjøttkaker!!!! (that’d be meatballs) I can’t even begin to think about what to say about Death Deserved. Except … I am making space on my shelves for what will undoubtedly become one of my favourite series.

You may remember my sadness when Thomas Enger’s previous series featuring Henning Juul came to an end. That series was my first introduction to Scandi-Noir and a new love affair was born. But now Thomas Enger has embarked on another adventure, alongside Jørn Lier Horst and as I

Some publishers are just complete go-to. Crime fiction and Nordic Noir are phrases that are somonis with Orenda Books. This blog tour invitation for Death Deserved was an automatic YES YES YES. Nordic Noir is a relatively new genre for me, but I am quickly falling head over heels. It has restarted my heart and gave me a passion for crime fiction once more. I couldn’t wait to get my grubby little hands on this exciting and riveting read.

I was expecting huge things from this superstar double act.

Police officer Alexander Blix and celebrity blogger Emma Ramm are teaming up to track down a serial killer who is targeting a seemingly unrelated group of famous people starting with former long-distance runner Sonja Nordstrom. After Nordstrom misses the launch of her controversial autobiography, Emma Ramm is determined to find out what has happened to her. When Emma finds Nordstrom’s front door unlocked and signs of a struggle she has no choice, but to turn to the police for assistance.

Sweet baby Jesus, where do I even begin?!

If one of your new year’s resolutions was to exercise more, Horst and Enger have you covered, forget that treadmill or the elliptical bike, just read Death Deserved! I felt like I’d run 10k, my breathing was so fast, my heart was racing, I’m pretty sure my blood pressure was through the roof! I’m not even exaggerating a little bit!

Now don’t worry, not the entire book is as nerve-wracking and explosive as the final part, which is quite fortunate really ‘
A short Christmas review:

When two top writers get their heads together, what can you expect? Brilliant new Nordic Noir that's what. I am on a role with good creepy, complex books at the moment and this one is a great addition.

A police officer and a media blogger join forces in what is a very unique and modern way.I haven't read of this mix before in a crime novel - at least not in this way - and I loved the match of the serious and the not so serious aspects of our society. There are a lot of

This book was hypnotic at its best from the cover to the prose to the end. Thomas Enger and John Lier Horst deserved every single word of praise!!

A celebrity murder + great publicity + more thrills + more kills = serial killer. Entered the cop Alexander Bix who was at the helm of the investigation along with his partner Sophie and blogger Emma Ramm who discovered the first body, and I got a book which was a thrilling police procedural.

Having not read any book by either of the authors, I was

This book is a real treat for all Nordic noir fans around the world as the names of both Thomas Enger and Jorn Lier Horst guarantee a high-quality serial-killer thriller, a roller-coaster ride filled with action, tension, and suspense. Death Deserved is the first installment of the Alexander Blix&Emma Ramm series and if one can judge from this first book, it will be a major success, both critically and commercial in the years to come. It should be stressed, for those unfamiliar with the work ...more

This is the first crime thriller I have read this year and I tell you the rest will have a lot to live up to. Usually I can pretty much nail who the killer is before the ending and I really thought I had it on this one so I was completely thrown when it was revealed. It did tie into another element of the story that I didn’t think too much of and had only questioned its significance at one point so it actually brought it altogether nicely for me. I know I’m being incredibly vague and that might ...more
Well this is a book that lived up to my expectations and then some. I have been excited to read it ever since I first heard that Orenda had secured the rights, but I hadn't been expecting to be faced with a book that pulled me in so quickly and so efficiently that I was completely and utterly invested in both the characters and the story.

The books opens in dramatic style when we meet Detective Alexander Blix at the start of his career. He and his partner are called to a domestic dispute, one

Death Deserved by Thomas Enger and Jorn Lier Horst is one of the most gripping crime novels I’ve read. I was a huge fan of Thomas Enger’s Henning Juul series, so I was really interested to see what he had in store for us with this book. Enger and Horst deliver with a high tension and an action-packed read that will keep your eyes glued to the page.

The novel opens with a horrifying scene when Detective Alexander Blix is called to a domestic dispute which ends in catastrophe. There is a high

I just have to mention how much I am enjoying the challenge I set myself this year. With so many fabulous authors to discover I really am spoilt for choice; in fact, this book wasn’t actually in my plan but after seeing all the good things said about it, I snuck it into my reading list anyway and am chuffed that for once I am not 3 years behind everyone else. With not having read any other books written by either author (yes, I know I should be shot) I had no idea what to expect from this ...more

Really liked this book. But
since it's written by the glorious Thomas Enger and Jorn Lier Horst, how could I not.

The book starts off with a bang and the storyline is quite fluid till the end. No dull moments.
Great plot. I really liked the characters most of all and hope to see them again. Sophie needs just a little more fleshing out but enjoyed her. Highly recommend this book. It's a winner. And I would like to note the translation was excellent.

What do you get if you cross 2 Nordic Noir authors at the top of their game, and in a masterful translator and a juggernaut of independent publishing?

You get the stone cold treat,'Death Deserved', which is the series opener that Thomas Enger and Jorn Lier Horst have created, and which has already sold tremendously in Norway. Now, with Anne Bruce's translation ,and Karen Sullivan ofOrenda Bookspromoting it, not only is there the chance for English readers to soak up this slice of Scandinavian

Sometimes you open a book and within a few paragraphs you know that this one was made for you. This is that book and I’m convinced, that series.

Regular readers will know that I am a fan of Jørn Lier Horst’s William Wisting series – where he uses painstaking, careful police work in his police procedural series to unravel the perpetrators of the crime. I’ve often said that Wisting is the policeman I’d want to investigate any crime against me. I’m also a huge Thomas Enger supporter; his prose is

Police Detective Alexander Blix has certainly not achieved the dizzy heights in his career that he imagined when he was a fresh-raced rookie.

A hostage situation nineteen years ago, in which he was forced to kill to save a five year old girl from her father, has left its mark both personally and professionally, leaving him divorced, estranged from his daughter, and at odds with his boss, but he is a fine and dedicated police officer none-the-less and getting the job done is what keeps him going.

This is described as the first episode of a gripping new Nordic Noir series and what a fantastic start! The story begins with a flashback to the very early days of policeman Alexander Blix's career when he was forced to make a very tough decision in order to save a life. A decision which has haunted him for years and which he has never been allowed to forget. Now a Chief Inspector, his former partner Gard Fosse is now his boss, he has split up from his wife and doesn't see much of his daughter. ...more

I loved Thomas Enger's Inborn and was excited to read this, the first in a new series, written with fellow author Jørn Lier Horst. And I'm happy to report that I wasn't disappointed!

I'm starting at the end. Right at the back of the book with the authors' acknowledgements. I always read the acknowledgements in a book because I'm a curious (ie. nosy) soul, but I know not everybody does. Well, if you fall into that group, I urge you to read these, because they had me giggling. Quite unlike any

*I voluntarily reviewed this book from the tour organiser.

What has just happened?! I'll tell you what, I have just read what is possibly the best crime thriller of 2020 and it is the beginning of a series - Hallelujah!!!! I'll be sitting over here, constantly refreshing waiting for book two, but first, here is what I thought of DEATH DESERVED:

This is the start of your new Nordic Noir obsession!

Two of Norways best loved crime writers come together to create something extremely special and bring us the unique due that is Blix and Ramm. With a crack hot double team and a hunt for a serial killer that has a flair for the dramatic, this book will have you racing through the pages as fast as the body count increases!

What happens when the police is not enough to investigate a serial killer? When there are no new clues to investigate or new ideas to search? This is the case of the police detective Alexander Blix, but he will have the help of the celebrity blogger Emma Ramm, it seems a weird collaboration, but there’s much more to the naked eye!
Everything will start when one of the celebrities that Emma has to interview doesn’t appear on time and when she starts looking for her it seems that it has been

This is a new police procedural series written by a collaborating writing team consisting of two, well established names in Nordic noir. I’ve read a number of novels by Thomas Enger and they’ve always been very good. Perhaps surprisingly, I’ve never read a book by Jørn Lier Horst.

A prologue which details a disastrous police operation sets up one of the main characters, damaged police officer Alexander Blix, who’s career, and mental state is unduly affected by the outcome. The other main

Jørn Lier Horst and Thomas Enger are really good partners in crime and they wrote a great crime reading for autumn.
This time detective Alexander Blix joins his force with celebrity blogger Emma Ramm. He is experienced cap and she has a journalist intuition, also there is something what they have in common, but luckily Emma doesn’t remember it.
They meet at the front of the house of sports icon Sonja Nordstrøm whom Emma was about to interview. But Sonja is not at home and this rises Emma's

First collaboration by these two Norwegian authors but another due September 2020....quite fun that there was one reference to Line Wisting......

Police officer Alexander Blix is separated and a bit of a loner on the force, whereas he first partner Fosse is now commander. Kovic arrives and she and Blix are partnered up. And in my opinion they make a good team.

This is such a satisfying crime thriller with a strong structure and plotting which is spectacular and which leaves you in awe. |It is a real masterclass. Add to that, some great characters who have their own backstories and you realise you are in for a treat. There is a balance between the police investigation and the journalism which brings conflict and moves the narrative along at a superb pace.

Tenacious policing and the ability to think laterally makes the investigation credible. The

When Emma Ramm, a journalist reports a missing person, the investigation begins.

Sonja Nordstrøm, a celebrity athlete and author of an explosive autobiography has disappeared….

But, more bodies start to be found, each with clues that link the victims in some way…leading them to believe there is more to come.

When you start reading a book by an author you have never read before there is always that thought of ‘what if I don’t like it?’. On this occasion the book is by two authors, Jørn Lier Horst & Thomas Enger, and oh my gosh they have blown me away.

Blix is a Detective with an attitude that will not let him stop until the investigation is solved. Add to that Emma, a celebrity journalist keen to branch out into ‘real’ journalism, you are left with an unlikely duo who between them both unearth

;I LOVED THIS! BRILLIANT. Had me turning the pages for fun. Gasping for breathe especially towards the end. Heart pounding. Brilliantly written. Short chapters. Gripping. Thrilling. Tense. Edge of your seat reading. You never know whats going to happen next or should I say who will be next? …
A cleverly written plot. I was beside Emma and Blix the whole way through. I loved both their characters and how they had a hidden past between them not in the romantic way either. Then being forced to work

Fast-paced, high tension, interesting main characters that I hope we will meet in future books. A serial killer with a twist and a story that gains momentum to the very end. I have enjoyed Jørn Lier Horst's (one of the two authors) previous series. Joining forces with Thomas Enger was a very smart move. A thoroughly recommendable first book by this duo.
