Love is a Rebellious Bird by Elayne Klasson is a beautiful novel. I was swept up into this story from the beginning. The main character, Judith, had me following her journey of love. She loved one man only. Her whole heart, soul, and mind were captivated by this one man. Distance separated the two. But neither one gave up hope. I explored the deep meaning behind her love for Elliot. What they have is real, raw, and magical. The ending made my heart swell and break and then mend again. Overall, I ...more

Love is a Rebellious Bird is, in essence, a sad but touching love letter from Judith to her one true love, Elliot. As their relationship spans over sixty years, Judith documents her feelings and the love, mostly unrequited, that she has for her friend. Sad though it is that Elliot never feels as deeply as she does, Love is a Rebellious Bird is is still a heartwarming, beautiful story.

Over her long life, Judith hangs on to the one friend who has been a constant in her life. Through husbands,

Judith fell in love with Elliot when they were in fifth class and this story is her version of her life long love for him. Judith and Elliot become close in adolescence and their fledgling love is severed as each goes off to university in different cities but they manage to maintain a close friendship. Inevitably as their lives progress, each of them embark on various romances and marriages but Elliot never forgets to send Judith a thoughtful gift on her birthday while Judith fantasises about ...more

This story is written between 2nd and 3rd person POV. At first, I wasn't sure if it was flowing as well as it should be. But I was wrong. This was very uniquely written and I never felt bored or like the story lagged. It was a heavy hearted story and at times I felt my heart even breaking with Judith (I also was very frustrated with her)! I found the characters so realistic and complicated. I loved how they were developed as we moved through the story. A beautiful story written by Elayne ...more

This is a gorgeous book. I love stories of lifelong love and longing for a particular person starting in childhood, and this book does a beautiful job of exploring that terrain -- specifically, how the power dynamic between two people can shift over time. Satisfying in the way of Marquez's Love in the Time of Cholera, Love is a Rebellious Bird is a book worth reading, and a veritable page turner. Kudos to Elayne Klasson for this beautiful work.

A LIFE WELL TOLD

I enjoyed how love arrived early to Judith and Elliott’s relationship. It’s presence created both tension and something deeply puzzling throughout their lives. The story’s authenticity was evocative of a loving memoir from start to finish. Klasson surfaces empathy, compassion and practicality in the completion of Love is a Rebellious Bird.

This was such a great read. As a character-driven book, it is easy to feel invested in the characters. I am going to look for more from this author in the future, as this was such an enjoyable read!
