A must read coming in 2020 is the follow up to Front Desk. Even though Three Keys is set during the 90s when Prop187 was proposed, it’s much relevant to what our nation and its leaders are projecting today. This story should be read aloud in every middle grade classroom, discussed deeply in terms of what’s right and wrong, what’s innate or what’s learned, and more importantly what America stands for.
A common theme in Three Keys is to use your voice and use it loudly; which all of the characters

Yang continues to prove that books for young people can both mesmerize and tackle complex social issues. You’ll route for Mia and Lupe again in this follow up to the beloved Front Desk! As new motel owners, some things are looking up for Mia's family and community, but new challenges quickly catch up to them. Mia navigates motel investors, watching her parents put off their dreams, a new teacher that doesn’t see eye to eye with Mia, and a looming election and immigration law that is already ...more

Here, Mia fights for immigrant rights during election season and Prop 187 is on the ballot. She has to deal with a teacher with a subconscious bias and work her way through that frustration. The book does an

An earnest, moving, wonderful follow-up to Front Desk, which was a favorite of customers and booksellers alike at my bookstore—and I'm sure this one will be too. I especially appreciated the author's note putting the events in historical context, since I had never read anything about Prop 187 before. Mia is as earnest and charming and good-hearted as ever. Highly recommended!
