This provocative and disturbing book is about the transformation of Europe into "Eurabia," a cultural and political appendage of the Arab/Muslim world. Eurabia is fundamentally anti-Christian, anti-Western, anti-American, and antisemitic, while striving for lsrael's disappearance and the vilification and isolation of America. The institution responsible for this transformation, and that continues to propagate its ideological message, is the Euro-Arab Dialogue, developed by European and Arab politicians and intellectuals over the past thirty years. With all the drama of a master writer, Bat Ye'or presents a wide range of historical and contemporary documents and facts to tell the story of how the European Union is being subverted by s]amic hostility to the very ethics and values of Europe itself. Readers who seek a fair resolution of the Arab-Isracl conflict will be shocked by the evidence produced in these pages of unfair pressures and deliberate distortions. Europe's independence of spirit is shown in the process of being undermined. This book challenges the current demonization of Israel and should be essential reading for everyone interested in true peace in the Middle East.

One of the best-written odes to hate I've ever seen. The author's extensive research on the history of Islamic conquests and the fate of non-Muslims under Muslim rulers convinces her that the future will be just like the ancient past: Muslim warlords will continue seeking to conquer the world till all are subject to them. Not only that, Ye'or accuses that the jihadists have now turned Europe itself into their ally against Judeo-Christian civilization. As she explains, the jihadist "ideology, strategy, propaganda, and phraseology were conceived, formulated, and imposed on a reluctant European public opinion by a strong Arab and Western political and ideological alliance, including Third Worldists, Leftists, Communists and the Extreme Right." (p. 86)
With a blizzard of facts and citations, Ye'or lays out her proofs of a new Euro-Arab Axis against Western values. Where many Muslims claim that a Jewish conspiracy controls America, Ye'or holds that Muslims now control Europe:
"The strengthened EU framework has institutionalized a symbiotic Euro-Arab partnership preparing a Kafkaesque cultural and political totalitarianism, wherein Islamist jihadist values subvert the whole European conception of knowledge, human rights, and fundamental individual liberties." (p. 269)
For Ye'or, all recent efforts toward "dialogue," "equality," or "justice" between Muslims and others have been a sham pretext for creeping cultural conquest by Muslims. The Westerners who promoted such accords have merely appeased insatiable aggressors. She claims that since Muslims believe that only their religion comes from God, and all others serve Satan, there is no realistic prospect for good relations with these people. Ye'or advocates a different approach:
"The EU financing plan for 2003 included several projects in the West Bank, Gaza, and Arab countries which, like Syria, Egypt, and the Palestinian Authority, are breeding grounds of anti-Western Islamic fanaticism. Without Europe's financial aid and know-how, those countries would hardly be able to feed their own growing populations. Europe could easily compel them to abandon their racist culture, instead of vindicating it." (p. 202)
In interpreting recent events, Ye'or moves into the realm of hate-mongering conspiracy theory, and she does this kind of writing very well. Her arguments are compelling. Her indictments of hate crimes by Muslims are damning. Her knowledge is vast and her memory is long. She does not forget a past crime against her people. For Ye'or, it seems that the difficult path towards forgiveness and civil relations is closed. Like the Nazis who insisted that the Old Testament proves that Jews are required by their scriptures to hate all other cultures, Ye'or insists that our friendships with Muslims are acts of treason. She accepts no excuse for peace with our Muslim neighbors.
Crazy extreme Zionist conspiracy theory that tries to masquerade itself as a academic book. Poorly sourced and with every conspiracy theory trope that you can imagine + racism. The writer don't know the difference between a Baathist and a islamist party or anything about Middle East history. It tries to be a book about history, theology and politics but fails in all of them. This is only extreme right wing propaganda that only convince a person that already believes in "white genocide" conspiracy theory. It is only weird that a Zionist would write a book that neo-nazis love.
Bat Ye'or's is an Egyptian-born historian who understands Islam, the Muslim mind plus both Europe and the Middle East. Her's is a fascinating book.
Ms. Ye'or clearly outlines why the Western world is where it is in its struggle with evangelistic radical Islam and its Jihadi terrorists.
As an historian also, I appreciate the way she so thoroughly documents the sources for her facts and statements.Politically correct she is NOT!
Given the extent of successful Muslim taqiyya (liefare) being used by Islamic apologists in the West, I found enlightening and helpful her tie of radical Islamism, and its inventors in the 1940s,The Muslim Brotherhood, to the Nazis, and especially to those who escaped justice by fleeing to Arab countries in the Middle East.
A hallmark book on the relation between the Arab World and Europe, best compared as a dysfunctional marriage where one (the Arab World) imposes its will on the other (Europe).
After the Oil Crisis of 1973, Europe embarked on a grand series of Dialogues that would result in economic, political and cultural cooperation with the Arab World. Cooperation is somewhat of a misnomer though, since in every area, the imposition was forced by the Arab World, as becomes clear from this document.
Under a muslim regime, any non-muslim is by rule of Sharia subjected to a Dhimmi role. This means the non-muslim must pay considerable taxes to its overlord and is subjected to a range of degrading and imposing rules. The author, Bat Ye'or, describes how the Dialogues resulted in Europe as an entity taking on the Dhimmi role by voluntarily subjecting to Dhimmi regulations; following the political lead of the Arab World (hate of America, Israel and Jews), paying considerable sums of money (subsidies in EU-speak, Jizya under islam), erasing its own culture and history (elevating Islam).
No area of public life seems to be untouched; education curriculums are rewritten to cater for the positive contributions of Islam to European civilization. The discourse leaves no room for dissenters claiming there is no such influence. Andalusia was no enlightened Islam, on the contrary. It was hardcore Maliki islam, with full dhimmitude impositions on non-muslims. Ostracism is certain for those who dare to challenge the common wisdom, though. The media continues to propagandize; Israel is the new Nazi Germany, whereas the 'freedom fighters' of 'Palestine' are just that. Terrorist are never traced back to their islamic roots; they are deranged, lone wolves, acting on their own. The relativism is sickening and unreal, yet happening all the same. Entire generations of Europeans are spoon-fed with this cultural poison.
The spotlight is also turned on the Interfaith Dialogue, as part of the bigger picture. The Arab World uses the subjected Christian Dhimmis under its rule to force its views on the Christians. The Christian religion is being negated and subjected to Islam, which turns out to be its creator and inspiration. Truth be damned! Who cares for truth, when you can just make up your own reality?
On the reason why Europe does this, the author is quite clear; Europe wishes to wield power over the Arab World, is afraid of the Muslim temperament, preferring to offer its share of Danegeld, a large degree of cultural relativism (aka progressivism) and it truly believes that an enlightened Islam can exist in Europe.
The end result is a large group of people -- EU leaders, media personalities, politicians, churchmen, artists, writers -- who protect Islam in all its jihadic vigour and so conceal further expansion of this religion, by sword and by stealth. None of the Dialogues has resulted in the Arab World reciprocating the good intentions of Europe. On the contrary, islamism is on the rise. With a vengeance.
The book is meticulous in following the various Dialogue forums, committees and institutions and builds on a huge body of work before coming to these conclusions.
The final thoughts of the author are bleak. As far as Bat Ye'or is concerned, Europe has been lost to Islam already. Over 40 years of 'Dialogue', a vast influx of muslim migrants and a dysfunctional master-slave relation with the Arab World has set Europe on an inevitable course to full Dhimmitude, adding it to the already vast realm of Dar al Islam.
The book was written 13 years ago. What is apparent now is that non-state actors (ISIS, Al Qaeda) play an even larger role then they did before. Whereas before the Arab states could lean on 'their terrorists' to refrain or expand operations anywhere, today's non-state actors are more out of control, striking everywhere for Islam. What effects this will have on the Dialogues is uncertain, but it appears to disrupt the process. Take, for example, the recent Charlie Hebdo, Bataclan, Brussels, Nice attacks. For normal, non-progressive, people it is clear that Islam is on a warpath. Only those with rosy-colored glasses, plain blinders or surrenderist intentions cannot (or will not) see the enemy for what it is. How will the disconnection between the rulers and the ruled play out? One can only hope for sanity and courage to once more regain control over Europe.
I rated this book five stars because of the wealth of information I learned -both historical and contemporary information. In fact it is this book that prompted me to read 'A Short History of Byzantium' by Norwich. Bat Ye'or's observations and claims are also being posited by many other contemporay writers which in and of itself is an endorsement of her positions. I became familiar w/her work through other books and the Powerline blog that I read - -rather religiously. While the content is critically important you will need to be committed to the subject matter as Bat Ye'or writes in a rather academic and even dull style. She also repeats many of the same points often. Although the various points she repeats are important to the immediate subject matter, a little more creativity and variation on [re-:]expressing those points would have made for a better read.
Pressuring Western European to Turn Against Israel During the years after World War II most Europeans were sympathetic to the Jews and Israel. This is still true. What has changed is that now the political leaders of Europe have turned against Israel. This change did not come from the European people, and it came only secondarily from European intellectuals and politicians. It came mainly from pressure from the Gulf Arabs and their use of oil as a political weapon. It started in 1973 with the Arab oil cartel withholding its supply, as an act of defiance following the Yom Kippur War, which Israel won. In exchange for access to Arab oil, the Arab nations made a large number of demands upon the western Europeans and the European Union: • To delegitimize Israel as a Jewish nation • To replace the term “refugees” with “Palestinian people” • To legitimize the Palestine Liberation Organization and Yasser Arafat • To recognize the PLO as the sole representative of Palestinian Arabs • To allow the PLO to join some United Nations organizations • To give large sums of money to the Palestinian Authority • To establish a homeland for Palestinian Arabs • To acknowledge the (false) assertion that Western Civilization is based upon Islam • To teach Arabic in European schools • To admit large numbers of Muslim immigrants into Europe • To allow Muslim women in European schools to be veiled • To transfer Western technology to the Arabs
Dhimmitude The Arabs who are trying to Islamize Western Europe give a romanticized description of medieval Muslim Spain. In reality, the peaceful coexistence of Muslims, Christians and Jews in Muslim Spain was achieved by forcing the Christians and Jews to live as second-class citizens. The author calls this second-class citizenship dhimmitude, after the Arabic word dhimmi, which means protected. Dhimmis are protected from jihad, because they have surrendered and agreed to submit to Islam. Being a dhimmi is above being a slave, but below being a Muslim. Dhimmis were not allowed to own land or own weapons. Dhimmis were required to pay a tax (jizya) for not converting to Islam. Dhimmis were allowed to ride donkeys, but not horses or camels. Dhimmis were required to always treat Muslims deferentially. Dhimmi men were not allowed to marry Muslim women, but Muslim men could marry dhimmi women.
Islamization of Christianity Radical Islamists are trying to change the foundation of Christianity from Judaism to Islam. According to Islam, Islam was the first religion, and the Old Testament is a distortion of the original religion of Islam. God told Muhammad that Judaism and Christianity as reflected in their Bible were corruptions of his original teachings, and Muhammad’s mission was to correct these deviations and bring all the Abrahamic believers back to Allah’s true religion, which is reflected in the Quran. This reinterpretation of Christianity is called the Islamization of Christianity. It appeals to those Christians in the Middle East who are antisemitic.
France’s New Empire One reason that France has pursued stronger relations with the Arab world is as a replacement for the French empire that it lost when Algeria became independent in 1962. Of all the countries in Western Europe, France is the one most interested in closer ties with the Arab world.
Red Herring: The Demographic Threat The Wikipedia article on the author, her book and the term Eurabia concentrates its criticisms mainly on the demographic issue. But Muslim immigration into Europe was only a minor topic in this book, and the author never asserted that there would soon be a Muslim-majority Europe. This book is mainly about the efforts of the Arab world to persuade the European intellectual and political leaders to adopt an Islamic view of the historical relationship between the world of Islam and Western Europe, and to adopt an Arab view of the Arab-Israeli conflict. The Wikipedia article did not present arguments and evidence against this part of the author’s thesis, but instead only quoted dismissals and name-calling by left-wing intellectuals.
Tone This book is far less polemical than the books of Brigitte Gabriel, Noni Darwish, Caroline Glick, Wafa Sultan, or Pamela Geller. In fact, the tone of the book is rather dry and academic.
If you want to understand what's happening in Europe today and why, Bat Ye'or's indispensable study and commentary is essential reading. This is a landmark achievement and may very well be looked upon in decades to come as a key indication that those of us living in the early 21st century had a chance to anticipate and thoroughly understand the emergence of a world order in which Europe ceased to be a part of Western Civilization.
AN EXPATRIATE EGYPTIAN CRITIQUES EUROPEAN/ARABIC AGREEMENTS
‘Bat Ye'or’ (‘Daughter of the Nile’ in Hebrew; a pen name) was born ‘Gisèle Littman’ in 1933 to a Jewish family in Cairo, Egypt; the family left Egypt in 1957; she moved to Britain, married David Littman, and they moved to Switzerland.
She wrote in the Preface to this 2006 book, “This book describes Europe’s evolution from a Judeo-Christian civilization, with important post-Enlightenment secular elements, into a post-Judeo-Christian civilization that is subservient to the ideology of jihad and the Islamic powers that propagate it. The new European civilization in the making can be called ‘a civilization of dhimmitude.’ The term dhimmitude … refers to subjugated, non-Muslim individuals or people that accept the restrictive and humiliating subordination to an ascendant Islamic power to avoid enslavement or death… The following chapters … reveal the development of a new ideology that is producing demographic and cultural change for the purpose of creating conditions for the fulfillment of the Eurabian vision. Eurabia’s cultural preconceptions include the ‘new Judeophobia,’ as well as resurgent anti-Americanism… These attitudes… are imposed … on an often reluctant public by political, media, and religious elites through methods that I will elucidate.” (Pg. 9-10)
Later, she adds, “How did Europe arrive at such a crossroads? Was Europe the target of a war of political and cultural subversion, undertaken by its own politicians, media, and intellectuals? What is the current meaning of Europe? Is there still a Europe at all, or are we witnessing its mutation into a conglomerate Euro-Arab continent? This brief study will endeavor to trace the main steps of a transformation that has already begun in Europe, the birth of a new ‘dhimmi’ civilization: Eurabia.” (Pg. 29)
She states, “The peace of jihad is founded on the principle …peace and security are conceded… if the infidels cede their territory and submit to the rules of dhimmitude. I have called ‘dhimmitude’ this condition of ‘subjection with protection’ of non-Muslims in their own countries, obtained by the cession of their land to the Muslim ruler. Subjection, because the infidels submit to the Islamic law … and protection because this law … guarantees limited rights under a system of discriminations that they must accept, or face forced conversion, slavery, or death.” (Pg. 34)
She observes, “Before 1967, an autonomous ‘Palestinian people’ had never claimed independence or sovereignty over the Old City of Jerusalem---or even over the territories conquered in the 1948-49 war… Even at the beginning of the 1970s, the political concept of a ‘Palestinian people,’ as distinct from the larger Arab nation, was still relatively inchoate… It was therefore normal practice then to refer not to the ‘Palestinian people,’ as did the Brussels resolution, but only to ‘Arabs’---people who were not different from the Arabs in the other countries of the Arab League… The creation of a ‘Palestinian people’ ex nihilo after the Arab oil embargo in 1973 was accompanied by a European policy that buttressed the legitimacy of this new Palestinian people with rights that were not only equivalent to, but even superior to those enjoyed by Israelis. To do so, European policy went hand in hand with the ancient and condemned Christian theology of ‘replacement.’” (Pg. 50)
She says, “The [1995] Barcelona Declaration … projects an image of people … discussing abstract and fashionable ideas: the rule of law; democracy... stability, justice, and good faith between nations… Yet none of these ideas is high on the list of Europe’s Arab state partners, who are for the most part corrupt and ruthless dictators… Some sponsor terrorism… calling their own terrorism ‘freedom fighters.’ In no Arab country today is there effective democracy or the universal recognition of fundamental human rights. Nor is there gender equality, the equality of non-Muslims, or full religious freedom… However, the Barcelona Declaration gives the impression that the EU… prefers to deal with an imaginary Arab world, invented to make possible this type of dialogue, rather than to face intractable Arab/Muslim realities.” (Pg. 105-106)
She asserts, “Like anti-Americanism, the anti-Israeli/antisemitic culture that has spread throughout Europe is integrated into the Euro-Arab partnership network… Islamic Judeophobia became an instrument of world geopolitics, like France’s anti-Americanism. Israeli resistance to this exterminatory drive was defined as a ‘world threat to peace.’ The rage Israel provoked led to the rancorous scrutiny and denunciation of virtually every security measure by teams of observers, sent by the EU to protect Arafat and other Palestinian terrorists… The sharp upturn in Judeophobia since 2000 resulted from the development of the Euro-Arab Partnership in social, cultural, and human affairs.” (Pg. 125)
She says, “Some clergymen and scholars promote the theory that Europe owes a debt of gratitude to the Arab-Muslim world that transmitted the Greek scientific heritage to it. Here again history has been distorted and is being used as a political tool. In fact, Greek civilization was taught in the Byzantine Empire, as well as in Italian cities… Fleeing the massacres and slavery brought on by jihad… Byzantine scholars took refuge westward. There they translated and taught the Greek classics in Latin… In light of this, it is strange that only the Islamic component is being promoted in Euro-Arab policy, as if it is the only relevant ancestor of modern European civilization…” (Pg. 143)
She explains, “Eurabian doctrine rests on five main pillars: 1) the creation of Euro-Arab human, economic, and political symbiosis motivated by European greed and fear; 2) a common goal of economic development as the source of human progress and achievement; 3) the firm belief that medieval Muslim Andalusia provides an exemplary model for the construction of Eurabia in the twenty-first century; 4) the vilification and demise of Israel as the key to Euro-Arab reconciliation; 5) hostility to America and obstruction of its influence in the Middle East.” (Pg. 147)
She states, “The March 2003 war in Iraq has provided another conspiracy theory for some Europeans: that Israel controls America. The accusation that Israelis control American policy is a well-entrenched belief in Muslim countries and now, it seems, is shared by French politicians.” (Pg. 159)
She asserts, “In fact, there are no historical proofs of the first Arab caliphs’ tolerance in the Christian lands conquered by jihad. It is well known that in the first century of Arab colonization, the situation was chaotic… The Muslims represented an army of occupation, formed from numerous tribes… Nonetheless, the theme of seventh-century Arab tolerance formed the cornerstone of modern Muslim-Christian Arab nationalism in Palestine, and an ideological weapon against any claims to independence by Jews and Christian dhimmi peoples.” (Pg. 164)
She suggests, “A full-blown ‘Palestinian replacement theology’ was created and spread throughout Europe,… The new Arab Jesus unites in his Palestinianism both Muslims and Christians against Israel. This holy synthesis sanctified the Palestinian Arab cause against a demonized and isolated Jewish state. Palestinians are thus endowed with the divine mission to remove Israel from Arab Palestine, thereby upholding the honor and truthfulness of Christianity and Islam.” (Pg. 176)
She summarizes, “For thirty years now, Europeans have been subjected to a permanent campaign of disinformation through the Euro-Arab Parliamentary Association and the multifarious lobbying networks of the Dialogue… in the pursuance of EAD’s twin purpose: the emergence of Euro-Arab unity as a pole of power rivaling America, and a way to secure oil supplies… Verbal violence, cynical and unwarranted coarseness against Jews and Israel, reminiscent of Nazi viciousness, are no common and proudly exposed in European media and universities contaminated by … Palestinian and Arab societies. Yet Europeans in their majority are still hostile to this phenomenon, which is after all an institutionalized policy imposed by the Eurabians---and in which they feel imprisoned and debased, powerless to fight what has become an Israelophobic culture.” (Pg. 208)
She concludes, “One may hope that America’s resolute policy has opened new perspectives and new opportunities for the world to eschew a former order of political connivance with hate and crimes. Yet nothing is sure---for it is human beings who are the creators and actors of history.” (Pg. 270)
This book will appeal to those seeking critiques of Islam and Muslims.
Ever since 9/11 there has been lots of specualtion about the East /West Conflict with the Islamic world. The theories of thought are divided into two camps. One camp believes that poverty and exploitation by the West have fueled Middle Eastern anger. The other camp believes that Islam is intolerant and wants to dominate the world. Bat Ye'or is in the second camp.
The author begins by discussion some general points about Islam. From the time of it's inception Islam has not abeen a religion of peace but rather a religion of violence. With in one hundred years the realm of Islam spread Saudi Arabia al the way to India via the sword. Inhabitant were given option conversion, death or Dhimmitude. Dhimmitude meant perpetual inferiority and the payment of a protection tax , called Jizya. Non Muslim did not share the same rights as muslims. A persecution that is still going on today. In the realms of land there are three kinds, also. First is Dar al Islam meaning the land of Islam, next dar al harb or lands of war. Dar al harb would refer to Christians kingdom. Dar al Hudna were lands that made a temporary treaty with Islam. This Hudna or temporary truce was reveiwed every ten years and it was unilaterally up to the muslim whether it remained in force. Some of the conditions for a Hudna were payment of tribute, allowingfor the propogation of Islam with in the land, providing acces or passage for muslim troops.
Islam was helped by traitors within the Christian land of the Byzantine Middle East. In he name of self-interest they helped the muslims take over non -muslim lands. THe same thing happens today. After World War II DeGaulle found that France was no longer a World Power. France was not invited to the Yalta conference of 1952. American influence was growing. In order to check American power and build up France DeGaulle thought up of an alliance of newly formed arab states and France. This plan of uniting Europe to Arabia came to fruiotion after the energy crisis of 1973. The Euro-Arab Dialogue was formed in oder to improve relations between Europe and the arab states of the Middle East.
From 1973 on it has been a series of capitualtion by Europe to the Arab world. History as taught inthe schools has been rewritten. European now feel that Europe owes a debt to Islam for civilizing it. Their politics become more pro-Palestinian and immigration is on the rise with foreign workers having he same if not more rights than the native citizens. Anti-semitism is rising and even the churches are being dhimmified. It is truly sad to watch.
A big disappointment compared to Bat Ye'or's solid work with her trilogy of Dhimmi books. They were well-researched, hard factual books that were very informative and very authoritative. This read more like a wild-eyed conspiracy theory book. Even if her conclusion might have been supportable, Ye'or seemed to go out of her way to make it more far-fetched by the supporting evidence she chose. I hope no one picks this book of Ye'or's up first, as I'd recommend her other three much more. Much too speculative, and her evidence just does not seem to lead to the conclusions drawn very authoritatively. Perhaps more interesting for someone heavily invested in the French domestic political scene, but then again mostly from a polemical standpoint. Read instead: The Dhimmi: Jews and Christians Under IslamIslam and Dhimmitude: Where Civilizations Collide and The Decline of Eastern Christianity Under Islam: From Jihad to Dhimmitude: Seventh-Twentieth Century.
Bat Ye'or comes off as some sort of conspiracy theorist and frequently uses the term "Judeo-Chrisitian values." I would not recommend it, but I gave it two stars because it does have a lot of useful information about Europe's relationship with the Middle East.
Okumak iyidir!...
France is the most dominating force of the African continent and Muslims cannot outsmart the French. So no Eurabia formation is possible on the northern side of Africa. As for the mainland Europe, Muslims cannot outsmart the Europeans in any way because the Muslim community is suffering from factions and infighting. Christians have a more stable civilization and eventually the Muslims of Europe will integrate to that culture.
My main problem with her thesis is that the author perhaps thinks that the "friendship" between Arabian leaders and European leaders is rational. I rather see it as oppertunistic. Just see how quickly mr Khadaffi was dropped...
I believe it is the most important book read about the future of Europe, and the rest of the free world. Bat Ye'or reveals the mechanism that islamizes Europe.
