(that was a refreshing sigh, like someone who just sipped soda in a commercial or got into a pool. not to be confused with a shriek.)
review to come / 4 stars
could not resist reading for even a minute longer
(i got an arc. and not to be dramatic but this is the best day of my life and nothing will ever come close.)
shoutout to Tucker for being the best person alive.
now there's a COVER and a SYNOPSIS and yet STILL this book is not in my hands!!!!!
Loved the characters, January and Gus, who are both authors and in a bit of a writing slump. It was interesting to read about how authors feel when writing and struggling to get a book completed. I felt their chemistry and liked the way they were both flawed characters ...more
This is a love story between two very broken individuals. One is a fiction writer who searches for the dark unsettling things and pours his gut-wrenching words into literary fiction and the other chooses happiness and sunshine, writing romance novels for those who seek an escape. They both have complicated pasts. He grew up with an abusive father and felt he was missing a piece of him because of ...more
My problem is not with the book per se but with the marketing of it, don't mislead you readers, please! and content warning would be appreciated.
This was not the beach read that I was expecting. For what I read from the synopsys I thought this was going to be a fun and light enemies to lovers romance and that's why I requested it. But I ...more

If someone ever asked me to describe the elements of a Perfect Romance Novel For Lily Herman, I'd just send them a copy of Beach Read. It's got it all: Snappy AF dialogue! An enemies-to-lovers storyline! Writers as main characters who I, for once, don't want to punch in the face! Enough steam to fog the windows but not enough for me to think I'm ...more

This love story felt honest and real and a little bit broken. Rather than focusing on “new adult” characters, this story has a 29yo falling in love with a 32yo, who are both still staggering a bit, as life hasn’t worked out quite the way they had originally planned. This 37yo can relate— I think that was the year I got laid ...more
This book blew me away and it really resonated with me. The blurb intrigued me and I requested but I can say this was not what I expected. So NOT a beach read.
What it is instead is so well written, so deep, so emotion-filled and stirring.
January and Gus knew each other in college and couldn't stand each other. Years later, she comes to the beach house her father left her and Gus lives next door. She recognizes him first and thinks he doesn't her, but he does. ...more
January arrives in a little lake town in Michigan with the intention of writing a far past due novel and cleaning out her late father's 'love shack' he had kept with his mistress. A mistress she only learned of after his passing. Oh did I mention she was just dumped by her boyfriend of six years? To say that she's not in a good headspace would be the understatement of the century.
Imagine her ...more
I really, really adored this book. It is straight up hysterical and the characters are wonderful. So many things here left me either laughing or grinning - or, in some cases, actually tearing up because Henry is is as good with sad moments as she is with funny.
All this said, I do think the book is a smidge uneven, with the beginning being way stronger than the ending. There was definitely a point or two in the last few chapters where things felt ...more
I went into Beach Read blind, as in I didn't even read so much as a blurb before diving in. And I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I normally prefer to sway more towards the erotic side of romances, but it was time for something a little lighter. Not that Beach Read was a light read by any means (tricky title there). I actually found myself more invested in the character's well-beings than in a typical ...more
