Fascinating AND entertaining!

I'm not sure what I was expecting when I won this book in a giveaway. (Thank you Hachette Book Group!) I was a little worried I would find That Will Never Work a bit dry but I was totally wrong. I found myself smiling/chuckling many times as I was reading it. Marc Randolph SO has a way with words and if he ever writes another book, I will be first in line to read it.

I tend to find Netflix a very interesting company and so the story itself is interesting. That said the writing style is such that I found myself skimming through large chunks of it without feeling like I was missing much. Lots of memoir-ish stuff that just added nothing.

If I didn’t find the topic particularly interesting I probably would have bailed on this one.

I generally don't care for business books, but Marc Randolph's story of Netflix hit home, as I was part of the Blockbuster group working directly for Wayne Huizenga in the very early days (way before the company was sold, moved to Dallas post 1994 and ruined). Didn't have to be that way. Classic story of a big company's failure to adapt. But more importantly, classic story of a small company's will to adapt, survive and prosper. Kudos Marc. I wish we worked together back then.

Man, have I enjoyed reading it! The way Marc tells the story......feels like you’re in the room with him. Although the book is mostly about the Netflix early years, it is even more a manual for startup perseverance and bouncing back. I was dissapointed that I had finished it!

It is in my top tier of fun and inspiring founding stories... right there with Shoe Dogs and Creativity, Inc. Who does not love to learn how one of their favorite products was built? Some founding stories are so so dry, this was not that. It is engaging, accessible and keeps you turning the pages. Highly recommend.

What an excellent read!
I won this book on a Goodreads giveaway and it quickly rose to one of the best books I’ve read.

In my business/marketing classes at college we’d often read books similar to this one. Entrepreneurial success stories; Disney, Toms shoes, etc. This book is no exception, chock full of information, it is easy to follow along and engaging from the front cover to the back.

This is an enjoyable story about the beginnings of Netflix. However, it only actually gets 4-stars in this review because I felt like 3 would have been a bit too low for how it ended. There are 2 main reasons for this:

1 - Until about the halfway mark, it's only okay

This book was like listening to an annoying uncle brag about how good he is at business. It seems like he just wrote it so he could reminisce about the good old days.

It took him a long time tell stories we already know the end to. And some of his stories were so contrived. [My wife] said, "You look like a chameleon." In a way...I was!

I really thought this was going to be a book about Netflix (more like Creativity, Inc.). It was more like an autobiography. We never get to the ends

Marc Randolph does a great job of describing in detail exactly how the idea of Netflix came about and how (and why) it became a reality.

He really makes you feel like you were there.

Some things that stood out to me:

(1) The process for coming up with Netflix was very cold blooded, rational and analytical, not a flash of intuition as it is often portrayed.

(2) From the beginning they knew that Netflix was an "execution play". There were no amazing ideas or technologies involved, it was mainly a

Note that this is an incomplete story of Netflix. The story ends in 2003. It well describes the story of the ascent of Netflix in the early days, as told by one of its founders. While he tells the story to his best ability, it still makes the impression that he writes it with some regrets in mind.

I don't think that the book does justice to Netflix. This is a company that is constantly under attack, one that constantly needs to reinvent itself to stay in the business.

An intriguing look into Netflix's origins, it's also a great insight into an internet company that started before and survived through the tech bubble. While I'd have loved to know what happened next at Netflix (how they got into streaming and building their own content), perhaps that's a book that Hastings will indulge us with sometime down the road.

Thought some of the anecdotes didn't add much, would've worked better if Randolph "killed some of his babies". Ended up skipping to the good parts,

It was a good book. Sweet and chronicled the earlier Netflix journey.
It stops just before they get into streaming - so I was a little disappointed that I did not get to learn about that. Maybe Reed will write a book someday :)

Like I said, it was a good read. But could be, I think, atleast 35% shorter.
A lot of the book was spent on building the scene - got descriptive at times and the story did not move fast enough for me. Essentially, could be crisper.

But a good book that you should read

Marc has shared so many embarrassing anecdotes and instances, which happen in various organizations, but nobody really talks about them.

He has given a true picture of ground reality, and where they were at each stage

I love the honesty mentioned in the book in such an audacious way. I will definitely recommend reading this book to budding entrepreneurs, to make them realize, that startups don't rise by fancy articles which ppl read, they rise due

I listened to the audio book which was actually narrated by Marc Randolph.
I found the book captivating and insightful.

This book would suit both a hopeful or newbie entrepreneur or someone just generally interested in the Netflix journey from a simple brain fart idea to the behemoth it is today.

I felt connected to Marc's story and even got close to tearing up at points in the final chapter.

Well worth a read!

This is a great book if you are in the ups and down of entrepreneurial endeavors. By all accounts, Netflix, has been a tremendous success. The book chronicles nearly the first 10 years of Netflix's existence and its transition after the tech bubble crash. The end of the book alludes to the relationship of the dual CEO that it implemented and gives perspective to the conversations that each had at the time.

5 stars - this is a very frank honest write up of a business journey. For a founder to accept his own limits is unheard of.
I just have one question: if the initial round of funding was as low as 25k - why would the author not buy a smaller house and more stock of his own idea?

The book reads like a novel and i suggest this for almost everyone for it's simplicity and honesty.
I hope I would be able to meet Mr. Randolph sometime and shake his hand. Thank you for sharing your journey.

This is a must read for every entrepreneur. The book show cases the struggles of a tech company trying to challenge the odds to build a successful business.
I can draw a lot of parallels with the book "Shoe Dog". The book is very compelling and engaging with the journey for Marc Randolph, former CEO of Netflix. As a reader I had great takeaways from the book.

Ok, the author calls it a memoir and it is. But there are also lots of good nuggets that are very relevant to the business world. Of especial interest to me is the mentions of the Netflix Culture. Not to mention it’s also an interesting story about how an iconic brand was born.

I wont this from a Goodreads Giveaway in exchange for an honest review. I'm a huge fan of memoirs and pop culture. I was worried this may be more a business development story but it was really good. There are some parts that can be skimmed or are repetitive but overall good writing. the CEO of Netflix tells a good backstory and shares his own experiences as well. Good stuff!
