Written with a rare combination of analysis and speculation, this comprehensive study of Javanese religion is one of the few books on the religion of a non-Western people which emphasizes variation and conflict in belief as well as similarity and harmony. MOJOKUTO

I appreciate the tremendous wok that has crept into the writing of this book. I especially enjoyed the many notes or quotes from the conversations Geertz has with his "informants". On the whole I am not convinced by Geertz's analysis. He offers no proof whatsoever that there is an Abangan and Priyayi religion. Besides his annoying habit of using concepts such as religion, tradition, mysticism, ideology, syncretism, tolerance, in a fuzzy and sometimes interchangeable manner there is a complete la ...more

belum selesai bacaa, errr. *sisihkan dulu*

it's one of the hallmark Geertz made in his work, perhaps even the most recognized one, at least among Indonesianist. but, as has been noted by many critics, his rich elaboration has simplify the diverse accents of Islam as embraced by Javanese people.

aku suka cara dia nulis. tapi aku engga setuju sama caranya menginterpretasikan orang jawa. seenaknya aja ngebagi-bagi orang jawa dalam tiga golongan. trus, kayaknya aneh aja kalo dia neliti tentang priyayi di pare.

Here is the book that introduced the [in]famous typology: the religious-minded santri, the secularized-traditionalist abangan, and the privileged-modernist priyayi. While Geertz's typology is today questionable, this book is still useful in exploring what's in a Javanese mind and culture.

This book was modern in its time. Nowadays the santri's "fanaticism" seems mild compared to contemporary extreme practice in the name of religion.

Not a lightweight read, lots of great information and stories to illustrate his findings. A good reference on a highly specialized topic.
