MY THOUGHTS: I have always had a hit and miss relationship with Slater's work, admittedly more hit than miss, but this one was definitely a miss for me. Usually her stories just flow, but this one didn't. I failed to get immersed in it and actually wound up skimming much of the the latter part of the book because I just didn't care any more and wanted it to be over.....
I felt like I was being told a story, a highly improbable and far-fetched one at that. I have a fairly good tolerance for improbable and far-fetched, after all I do read and love fiction, but this just went a step too far. I didn't feel any tension, any suspense, just head-shaking disbelief.
The characters were very one-dimensional and the plot, particularly towards the end, ludicrous. This could have been an absolutely brilliant book, but it falls well short of that mark. I know I am in the minority here, but this was a very disappointing read for me.
Reading is a personal and subjective experience, and what appeals to one may not please another. If you enjoyed the excerpt from Single by K.L. Slater, and the plot outline appeals, please do go ahead and read it. You may well love it, as many other people have.

3.5 Stars decided to just round up for my one of my fav. authors!
My seventh novel by this author. This novel has an interesting cast of characters and I spent much of the book trying to diagnose them all!
I was never bored and did start to question one particular character's actions- wondering what they were hiding. I even made up one twist on my own that actually was wrong, but hey, I thought it was good. The other twist, I did predict. And there were some good twists and turns that surprised me.
I enjoyed it although it wasn't as mesmerizing as some of her previous titles - that were such page-turners (for me). I know I've read tons of psychological thrillers and it is getting harder for me to be fooled. I do enjoy her writing though and look forward to future Slater novels. I have her newest Audible title The Apartment and I'm excited to give it a listen.

This psychological thriller is principally told from the point of view of Darcy, widowed with two young sons and of surgeon George Mortimer, a widower with a daughter called Romy. Darcy’s husband Joel had betrayed her in some way and George has skeletons in his closet. As the two become closer a twisty story emerges.
The characters in the book, whilst not all likeable are easy to picture. The children probably emerge as the nicest characters. I really like the Nottingham setting as that’s where I’m originally from and I do like books in areas I know. There are some lovely descriptive sections in particular the lodge at Christmas in North Yorkshire and when Darcy moves in with George. I wouldn’t mind living in George’s house - minus George - he had me at bifold doors! Whilst I think it takes this book a long time to get going, from about 50% the pace quickens. It is twisty and surprising but it’s very convoluted and I have to be honest, I didn’t totally buy into it and I so wanted to.
Some of the psychological elements didn’t seem very menacing to me. I’m pretty sure the delivery of a veggie box isn’t actually dark and predatory. I’d just eat it and be happy that someone else paid for it! In my opinion, there is too much unnecessary detail that detracts from the evolving story and stops you seeing where the story is heading and prevents you feeling the tension you should. I also find the reporting style and single sentence paragraphs a bit irritating.
Overall, I don’t love this book but I don’t hate it either. The climax feels like an overly dramatic, dastardly and overblown 40’s film and all we need is the villain saying wuahahahaha although I know that other people loved it!

WOW! Kim Slater does it yet again with this her 10th psychological thriller and anyone who reads my reviews know I have loved them all and every time a new one is out its my new favourite, well, again, ‘Single’ is my new favourite!
Just how many twists and turns can you get in one book?, being a bit of an ‘old hand’ re psychological thrillers I think I have read most things but this book is genius at how
the plot keeps you guessing and guessing and then guessing some more
Darcy’s life is a mess, then she meets debonair surgeon George, its love, real love and nothing is going to stop it, not Georges stalking ex and not his housekeeper Maria who seems to have more than cleaning on her mind!
Not even the wonderfully played ex in laws of her previous hubby, you couldn’t wish for a better couple to love to hate in a book
Every character is well done and all have secrets and agendas, most are telling lies and all seem to be converging on Darcy to ruin her perfect romance
Be careful who you trust Darcy, you have more than one psychopath to deal with
The story ends shockingly on a few
scores and one part had me saying ‘no they really did that’ out loud!!
Suspenseful drama at its best, as always told in a way to engage us and just 100% enjoyable
And a Christmas scene that had me wanting to go to the log cabins where it was set to experience it

Single was one hell of a ride.
K. L. Slater introduces us to Darcy, a single mother who finds out the harsh truth about her husband, Joel, after he dies. While struggling to raise two kids on her own, she accepts help from Joel's parents and sister who adore her sons but despises the control they have over her life. One day, a local doctor, George, saves her asthmatic son's life and she falls head over heels for him. Their relationship is not approved of by Darcy's in-laws and neither by George's obsessive stalker who won't leave them alone. And thus begins a story that messes with your head; you won't be able to guess who's lying and who's telling the truth.
Single is told from the perspectives of many characters—switching from third person to first person occasionally, we gain insight into the thought processes and intentions of various secondary characters as well. Slater's writing is remarkable; she doesn't leave any clues as to what's coming next. There are a few chapters that seem to be unrelated to the main plot but in the end, everything starts to make sense. Even after most of the story is told, Slater plants doubt in your mind and you're once again struggling to tell the truth apart from the lies.
I absolutely enjoyed this book with all its twists and turns and its ability to baffle me. This is the first book of Slater's that I read but it won't be the last. I totally recommend this one!

K L Slater has once again robbed me of a night of sleep! I made the mistake of picking this up before bed and I just could not put it down. Twisted and addicting, I was completely hooked from the very first page. Darcy A widow and mother of two young boys is still struggling to find her footing. One day while at the park her youngest son has an asthma attack and his inhaler is not where it should be. Lucky for Darcy there is a doctor in the house. Handsome Dr. George Oliver is soon on the scene saving the day. Soon Darcy finds her self romantically involved with George, and before she knows it she has moved in to his beautiful home with him and his daughter. BUT Darcy has unresolved issues with her deceased husband Joel and his family, and George has some skeletons in the closet. What terrible thing did Joel do? And who the heck is Opal?
What a wild ride! miss Slater sucker punched me with the twists in this book! I was so convinced I knew what was going on, but NO! Darcy was such a loose cannon I didn’t know whether or not to trust her. To be honest I didn’t trust any of the characters in this book. They all seem to have some kind of agenda. Another well executed thriller from one of my favorite psychological thriller authors!

Having previously read many of K.L. Slater’s psychological thrillers I already knew going into Single to expect good, solid writing. Thankfully, I was right on that count and immediately became engrossed in this latest psychological thriller.
Darcy is a single mother of two boys that while she has them playing at the playground the unthinkable happens and one of her boys falls. Thankfully there was a doctor also at the playground with his daughter and he manages to save Darcy’s son’s life.
Seeing that George, the doctor, didn’t have a ring on his finger and was young and handsome Darcy goes out of her way to thank him for his help. Soon after tracking him down George asks Darcy out and the two begin to date but both have problems in their past that follows them into their new relationship.
Single was typical of K.L. Slater’s work with plenty of twists and turns and engaging writing that drew me right into the story. As the story in this book builds you clearly begin to suspect everyone and don’t know who to trust as the layers are uncovered with every twist. Definitely still a fan and will certainly keep an eye out for her next novel.

My Review:
Single was a good read. Perfect for mystery fans. To say it had a bit of drama going on is putting it mildly!
The book revolves around Darcy. Darcy has had a hard time of it. Her husband has passed away but not before Darcy learned a horrible secret about him involving another woman. It caused her to have a total breakdown and temporarily give custody of her kids to her ex husband's family. Now however she is allright.
Or is she?
When her son has an asthma attack and is saved by a stranger who also happens to be a doctor, Darcy falls head over heels for him. It is not long before they start a relationship.
But there are ominous signs of things to come. Who is the mysterious woman who seems to be following them? Why does Darcy's ex husband's family get so personally upset that Darcy is dating again? And why is the "other woman" who shared Darcy's ex husband and's affections coming back to town?
This is a book where lies and secrets abound. It has alot of twists, almost to many which is my only negative. But somehow it all worked well here. I do not usually like multiple twists but I did with Single.
I think that is because literally EVERYONE in this book..could be good..or could be evil. It is not one mystery to solve..it is about half a dozen. The book throws us clues but really we do not know who is unreliable..including the narrator and who isn't. There is not one character you do not question and as a result, one's curiosity keeps going up as the book goes on .
It was written very well as far as the characters. Even those with small roles. What I really dig is what I mentioned. Single is the ultimate psychological thriller because EVERYONE has a secret. And EVERYONE'S motives are questionable. And NOBODY is whom they appear to be. And finding out who is good and who is not will requite reading to the end.
So in short..I liked this! Would recommend. I read it on Christmas Eve and it was a fun book. Recommended to all fans of Domestic thrillers that mindfuck you all the way through.

Single was a good read. Perfect for mystery fans. To say it had a bit of drama going on is putting it mildly!
The book revolves around Darcy. Darcy has had a hard time of it. Her husband has passed away but not before Darcy learned a horrible secret about him involving another woman. It caused her to have a total breakdown and temporarily give custody of her kids to her ex husband's family. Now however she is allright.
Or is she?
When her son has an asthma attack and is saved by a stranger who also happens to be a doctor, Darcy falls head over heels for him. It is not long before they start a relationship.
But there are ominous signs of things to come. Who is the mysterious woman who seems to be following them? Why does Darcy's ex husband's family get so personally upset that Darcy is dating again? And why is the "other woman" who shared Darcy's ex husband and's affections coming back to town?
This is a book where lies and secrets abound. It has alot of twists, almost to many which is my only negative. But somehow it all worked well here. I do not usually like multiple twists but I did with Single.
I think that is because literally EVERYONE in this book..could be good..or could be evil. It is not one mystery to solve..it is about half a dozen. The book throws us clues but really we do not know who is unreliable..including the narrator and who isn't. There is not one character you do not question and as a result, one's curiosity keeps going up as the book goes on .
It was written very well as far as the characters. Even those with small roles. What I really dig is what I mentioned. Single is the ultimate psychological thriller because EVERYONE has a secret. And EVERYONE'S motives are questionable. And NOBODY is whom they appear to be. And finding out who is good and who is not will requite reading to the end.
So in short..I liked this! Would recommend. I read it on Christmas Eve and it was a fun book. Recommended to all fans of Domestic thrillers that mindfuck you all the way through.

I really enjoy the writing of KL Slater and always struggle to put them down once started. This one was no different and I was hooked from page 1.
The books main character is single mother Darcy and her life suddenly crashes when her son falls from a rope bridge at a local playground. Her sons limp lifeless body lies on the floor with Darcy feeling helpless only to be saved by George a local off duty doctor.
George is also a single parent and Darcy feels instantly indebted to him and she starts to make moves on him. Before long they are dining out and spending a lot of time together and it is not long before George asks Darcy and her two boys to move in with him and his young daughter. On moving in things are far from perfect and strange things occur that unsettle Darcy. George blames a previous obsessed girlfriend named Opal but Darcy starts to wonder if she has made a mistake moving in.
The book is a good read and is certainly full of action but my only issue was some of the situations did appear a little far fetched but it is a novel after all.

When two widowed single parents meet and fall in love, there are bound to be complicating factors from their pasts but this pair of lovers have more baggage than most. For Darcy Hilton, mother of Kane and Harrison, it's her husband Joel's other woman, Daniela Frost who she only found about after he died and for Dr George Mortimor, father of Romy, it's his ex Opal Vardy. Darcy had a breakdown after Joel died and she found out about Daniela, but Joel's family were great, taking custody of the boys while she got better. Now she's concerned they're a bit too involved in her life and she still hasn't really got over Daniela. George is worried that his ex is stalking him and when strange things happen to Darcy, thinks Opal may be targeting her too.
Ms Slater writes some of the most twisty psychological thrillers and this one is pretty twisty with many a jaw-dropping surprise in the plot. Told in several voices, you'll start wondering if anyone is really who they seem to be. 4.5★

Wow, where to start with this book! I’ve learned from experience that it is unlikely that I’m going to put down a book by this author once I start. And, of course, I was right. From the very first page I was totally engrossed in Darcy’s story. From just 15% I had my eyes open to all the characters suspecting them of all kinds of shenanigans but even my own suspicious mind couldn’t prepare me for all the twists and turns that we’re heading my way. The author constantly posed questions that I had to have answered which drove me through the novel at breakneck speed. Nothing could have prepared me for the revelations that came one after the other and totally blew me away. Highly recommended and a huge 5 ***** from me.

K L Slater is a master of the psychological thriller genre and Single is yet another example of this. I read this book in just a few hours, not ready to put it down and determined to work out how it would end. Every scenario I came up with was wrong, and to me that is a sign of a great story. This one was so twisty and believable - fantastic. If you have not read anything by Slater before what are you waiting for? Seriously, you will not regret it.

Darcy has had a few rough years. Her husband died four years ago and she went into a mental spin. For a while her in-laws had custody of her two young boys while she got the help she needed.
She's now doing much better, her boys are happy and she's managing. When a health emergency happens to one of her sons, she meets George ... a local doctor who saves the boy's life.
One thing leads to another and the two of them go from coffee dates to Darcy's moving in with him and his young daughter. They have a lot in common ... both their spouses have died and left them with young children to raise... they enjoy doing things together and a total family.
The other thing they have in common ... they each have a stalker.
So who is following Darcy, taking pictures and sending them to her? Is it "his" stalker .. or "her" stalker? Throw in Darcy's in-laws who hate the idea of her being with someone other than their son ... George's cook/maid/sometimes nanny ... or maybe a patient that has a grudge against the doctor? It could be anyone ... even someone closer.
Darcy doesn’t know who to trust, but she’s starting to suspect that, whatever the truth, she might have put her beloved boys into terrible danger…
I was totally absorbed in this psychological offering. Characters are spot on, deftly defined. The story is cleverly crafted with twists and turns along the way with an unpredictable ending.

This is one roller coaster ride you will not want to get off. K.L. Slater has done it once again. This is a super, well written, gripping and twist filled read. A story of trust, deception betrayal and how your past can come back to haunt you. The plotline is well crafted and executed. I was hooked from the beginning. The characters are true to life. The writing flows seamlessly from the pages. The story also touches on stalking and bullying. The suspense and tension build the more you read. I do recommend thus book.

Single mom Darcy Hilton is trying to rebuild her life after her husband's unexpected death. When she meets George, a single father, and doctor, she immediately finds herself falling for him. But as their relationship progresses, bizarre things start happening and she becomes convinced that George's ex-girlfriend is stalking her. George doesn't seem very bothered by what's happening to Darcy, leaving her to wonder if she's made a huge mistake by trusting him. This book drew me in right from the first page. The plot is gripping and nicely paced. The author does a fantastic job of building the tension and making you question Darcy's sanity. I see that I'm in the minority here, but I really liked Darcy. I admired her for keeping her cool in the midst of all the crazy things that were happening around her. I was genuinely worried and concern for her and the boys, and was angry at her in-laws for being so controlling. I was rooting for her even when it becomes obvious that she was keeping secrets from us. The last 25% of the story was unpredictable and kept me on the edge of my seat. There were some twists that I liked and some I didn't really care for. Overall I didn't love this book but I didn't hate it either. I really liked K.L. This book took a few chapters for me to get really invested in but once I did wow.
I just couldn't believe how many people were lying and were completely off their rocker.
This book could have very easily been called everyone is lying.
I found the the story it's self not to be very fast pace but extremely intriguing an the plot twist was amazing.

Finishing Single has literally left me lost for words. I mean how am I supposed to review this story? It has blown my mind. Seriously, obliterated it. It is mind numbingly brilliant. Honestly, if you want twisted, they don’t come more twisted than this.
Darcy was someone I had a lot of empathy for. She has struggled with her mental health due to the death of her husband but wants to move on with her life. Her in laws whilst they come in handy, are a constant thorn in Darcy’s side as it’s obvious they mainly care about the relationship between themselves and their dead son’s children. I was really routing for her when she meets George.
With the genre of book this is, I just knew that trouble wasn’t far away and boy I wasn’t wrong. There were quite a few parts in the story that I had to go back and reread as I couldn’t comprehend what I’d just read. Not because I had got lost but because the author literally knocked me sideways with revelation after revelation of which I hadn’t seen any of it coming.
Single is an outstanding read. Plain and simple, outstanding. With each book I consume by the author, she just gets better and better and keep thinking there’s no way she can top her last one. She does though and not only has she raised the bar with Single but she has well and truly smashed it. Bravo!

This may be one of the shortest books I've read in a while, but by golly, it's got more twists and surprises in it than one three times its length. That brought another plus: That meant I didn't want to put it down - and I didn't have to!
I'll give the author props for something else; all too often, with female characters in situations like this (more on that later), at least one of them is such a hand-wringing, self-doubting, paranoid person that all I really want to do is smack her upside the head. Not so here - even when Darcy, a single mother who's struggling from the devastating loss of her husband, disapproval from her late husband's family and trust issues with the new man in her life. Oh sure, she has her emotional ups and downs, but at no time did I yell into my Kindle, "Get a grip, woman - put on your big-girl pants and move on!"
Following some kind of mental breakdown after her husband died, his parents took custody of her two young sons. Now, she's trying to prove she's capable of taking them back to live with her. Early on, one of her sons suffers a severe asthma attack and his rescue inhaler is nowhere to be found. Enter George, a local doctor, who runs in to save the day. His good looks and single-parent status aren't wasted on Darcy (nor are hers on him), and - you guessed it - they start what Darcy hopes will be a beautiful relationship.
Shortly after she and her boys move into George's fancy mansion, though, she gets a bunch of flowers with a dire message. George claims they're from an ex-girlfriend who's now stalking him, but he's not forthcoming with details. Darcy is concerned that she's not getting the whole story, but she's reluctant to ask because, as it happens, she's got a few secrets she's not ready to share with George.
Plenty of other intriguing characters keep the pot stirred, including a long-time housekeeper who isn't happy that Darcy may be usurping her job and a woman who, shall we say, came between Darcy and her late husband. 3.5 star rating.
This story packs quite a serious punch at the end that I did not see coming. That's why I gave it 3.5 star rating. The twists and turns this story takes are wicked!!! (It just takes forever to get to them).
Here was my issue and why I rounded down to 3 stars versus up to 4 stars. For me, the story took too long to get rolling, for the meat of the mystery to be revealed and suck me in as a reader. Now once it was, I had a hard time putting it down. But for me that was the last fourth of the book. Also, the main character Darcy just flat out drove me up the wall. In many stories this can work for the benefit of the story and add an extra layer. Not the case for me in this one. Many times I almost put the book down because Darcy was so annoying. I am glad I didn't, that crazy ending makes the book worth reading.
Is this a good storyline? Yes. Would I recommend it? Yes. Will I check out other books by this author? Yes. Did I love this book? No. It was a good story, but not a great one.

Single is another great psychological thriller by K.L.Slater.Like her other novels it has a fast paced plot, great characters and a story that builds up with unpredictable twists and turns.Not one of my favorites by her as the ending felt a little far fetched but still enjoyable and cannot wait to read the next one !

Not my favorite K.L. Slater book.
Waay too many eye-rolling moments with an ending that was contrived, convoluted, and implausible.
I listened to the audiobook, read by Lucy Price-Lewis, who did a fabulous job with the narration.
2.5 Stars, rounded up.

The day of the hearing, it was mid-July, scorching hot and I’d dressed in jeans and a thick cable-knit sweater with a roll neck.
Single by K.L. Slater is one of those books that I read in one sitting, shaking my head at the absolute terribleness of people, yet loving every minute of this high suspense thriller! This book has more ups and downs than a roller coaster and more twists and turns than a complicated maze! I had no idea who to trust and what ulterior motives each character was hiding until the end.
Darcy, the main character, is passive and gullible - easy to take advantage of; she has suffered a break-down from a past shock and betrayal and this drives her character. It is also the basis for the initial plot but it goes so much deeper and so much darker. After the death of her husband, Joel, she loses her children temporarily to Joel’s family. When she regains custody, she meets charming and dare I say, perfect, George. Told in multiple points of view, there are a few chapters when the reader is left to wonder who is narrating but it completely works for the story and felt a vital part in keeping the suspenseful atmosphere. Darcy is extremely likable but I also wanted to kick her for being so docile and meek at times but she is the right character for this tale. The secondary characters are well written and integrated into the story effortlessly, each with a purpose to the story, I love this! No extraneous characters for filler!
This is such a suspenseful thriller that I would recommend to any fan of the genre. I’ll be reading K.L. Slater’s past work and her future work and look forward to it!

Widowed Darcy Hilton has one of her two sons saved from a asthma attack by the handsome doctor George Mortimer. They engage in a relationship. George has a little girl named Romy. Darcy's family from her former husband are not keen on possibly losing the visits they get from their grandsons.
Both Darcy and George are having women plaguing them for different reasons.
This is the image that Kim Slater is painting for us, and invites the reader to believe if happening. The truth is far from it, as twist after twist reveal themselves. Nothing is what it seems to be, and the truth is very scary.

It's been a while since I've picked up a K.L. Slater book and I don't know WHY IT TOOK ME SO LONG. This is my third book by her and this one is just as addictive and bat shit as the rest. I mean, if I'M not going to be here for the crazy, who will? You? YOU? Haha - of course you are!
What I especially love is how quick these reads are. You simply want to keep going to figure out what the hell is happening because there's always something going on and nothing is ever what it seems to be. Now, I'm ALL about suspending reality and taking on some ridiculousness. Sometimes it can get a little TOO convoluted and then it starts to lose a little magic. Unfortunately this one DOES go in this direction.
There are just too many twists trying to be worked into this. While I didn't see every single one coming my way... well, with all that was going on, I was going to miss catching a few of those balls regardless. I don't think the flashbacks did any favors to the story and sometimes it was difficult in figuring out whose voice was talking within a chapter. Then the ending kind of went abrupt to three months later and now my neck hurts because whiplash.
HOWEVER, this book was still absolutely addicting and despite all the little things that didn't *quite* work, I did love the insanity of it all. How quickly everything unraveled. How everything ended up tying together. All the YES for ALL the crazy. It's why I love these books so much. My favorite K.L. Slater so far is Blink - so if you love crazy thrillers, definitely read Slater and definitely read Blink. I would still recommend this one as well - just remember the book is insane, not you. *wink*

Darcy is so very grateful that a stranger came rushing to her aid when her son had an asthma attack. The stranger, who she soon learns is named George, is an esteemed doctor. Meanwhile Darcy's life is not going that great. She eventually begins spending time with George and he ultimately invites her and her son to move in with him and his young daughter.
Beyond her attraction to George, this invitation is a true blessing. For starters, Darcy had a tough past after she lost her husband, even allowing her in-laws to take custody of her son for a while. Although she is now taking full care of her son, the boy spends a lot of time with his grandparents and his aunt.
Meanwhile both Darcy and George are hiding dark pasts and secrets. In both cases, their pasts are front and center, and bringing danger too close and too often. Not only does Darcy have to look over her shoulder. she must now wonder whether or not she can trust George. What is more is that there is something rather sinister going on with her in-laws.
Will all of these things threaten Darcy's future? Will she and her son come away unscathed from people who do not have their best interests at heart? For a thrilling read, as in the case with the other K.L. Slater stories I have had the privilege of reading, do not hesitate to pick up your copy of Single. You will not be disappointed.
