Exactly what it purports to be: a study of how war affected colonial society, how colonial society affected war, and colonists' attitudes towards war. Unfortunately, a dearth of source material drove Ferling to focus (too much in my opinion) on the Revolutionary era. Admittedly, I'm not sure how that could've been avoided, but it does to seem to weaken the book somewhat.
