Maddy is a newsreader. She's on-air covering the news when pictures of a road traffic accident comes in. Maddy recognizes the car, her husband Simon was driving it. Simon is put in a drug induced coma to try and aid his recovery. DCI Rachel Hart is in charge of investigating the crash. Was it drive error or something more sinister that caused the accident? Rachel also has a new man on the scene. But will she let him get close this time?

Although it's a little predictable at times, thi

The premise for this book sounded intriguing, live on air Maddy reports a terrible car crash, she learns while speaking that the car involved is her husbands, Simon!....and so the story then unfolds re wether this is in fact an accident or more likely a deliberate act and if so why

I first met Detective Rachel Hart in the first book of this series, Little Girl Missing. Just like before, Rachel takes on another chilling case.

Maddy Shaw is doing her regular newscast. As she begins reporting, images begin showing up on the video screen. She freezes and all of the color drains from her face. It is the worst thing she could have ever imagined. She is reporting of a life-threatening car wreck and it doesn't take her but a minute to recognize that the car

This is a great series and the second book has provided more of the backstory of Detective Rachel Hart’s life.
Rachel starts to look into a near fatal car crash when she finds out it’s the husband of someone she knows.
It soon comes to light that this was no accident and there is link to a recent death in the area.
Rachel offers support to her friend, Maddy, and her daughter but when the investigation reveals something dark from the past she has to hold things back from them.

This is a fast-paced crime thriller, the second in the series featuring DCI Rachel Hart, and I have some mixed feelings, especially about the cliffhanger ending and some unresolved issues. I assume that's the tag for book 3. I don't know about your reading habits, but mine are such that by the time it comes out, I will have totally forgotten my urgent need to know and may no longer even care. That being said, this is a decent detective novel though quite predictable once we learn what's really g ...more

Protect a friend and find a murderer is no easy task when the clock is ticking away!
Maddy's husband has a secret that he may just take to the grave but the problem is he ain't talking because he's now in a coma induced state.
What appeared to be a car accident was anything but with an entire secret life being lived including but not limited to gambling debts.
Simon was targeted as this was no mere accident.
However, Detective Rachael knows her friend Maddy all too well and she kn

Quite a different police procedural, it had friendship at the backdrop of it. It wasn't clinical like the other books in this genre, the personal aspects written were more interesting.

It started gently with a family of 3, where the father Simon was hiding a secrets, daughter Siena was coming out of a bad break-up and attempted suicide, and the mother Maddy trying to look after her family. Simon had a near fatal road accident, Maddy called DI Rachel Hart to help. Their lives had cross
The second book to feature DCI Rachel Hart but my first, WHAT HE DID is a fast-paced thriller and police procedural with a difference. I like that you can pick up this book without having read the first one "Little Girl Missing" (though admittedly, it has been on my TBR list even longer) as there is enough backstory to bring you up to speed so therefore it can be read as a standalone. But having read this one, I now want to read "Little Girl Missing" even more!

What He Did, is one hell of a read! Right from the beginning I was hooked and glued to the pages as I was taken on a wild ride, full of twists and turns. On many occasions throughout I was holding my breath with a racing heart as to how this was all going to unfold. It all wraps up nicely but then Julia throws in an OMG ending that has set up and now has me waiting very impatiently for the third instalment!

For the second instalment, we see Rachel embroiled in a new case when Simon th

I did not read part one yet due to being too busy when it was published. You know the feeling probably : too many books, too little time, but one thing has become very clear after finishing this book : I am even more looking forward to reading it.

What can I say about this one? Well, that is very simple. I was taken in by the fluent writing style, dragged away by the intrigueing story and misled by the great storytelling. I thought that I had figured it out what was what. Nope, not the case. 🙂 ...more

This is the second book in the Detective Rachel Hart series and I am loving it. Hooked from the first page, a murder mystery but SO much more. Plenty of tension and suspense plus twists and turns galore. Essentially a whodunnit but a bloody good one. I had my list of suspects and was slowly whittling them down until I had one and I still got it wrong. I hate a book that is predictable, I like to use the old grey matter and work it out for myself. Then when I am wrong then this is a bonus. This i ...more

What He Did , second in the series of Detective Hart, is a book that will grab your attention from page one.

It has murder, secrets from years ago, family and the suspense keeps you turning the pages.

Did I guess ? No can't say I was 100 per cent right.

I also liked that you get to know Rachel more in her private life , there is more than one dimension to her.

I will be waiting in line to read the third book in the series. Give it a try you won't be disappointed .

I read, reviewed and loved the first book to feature Detective Rachel Hart, which was called 'Little Girl Missing' and which was released on 14th June 2019. I couldn't wait to get hold of a copy of the second book in the series called 'What He Did'. Well ladies and gents the wait is over because 'What He Did' was released on 22nd October 2019. First, I want to thank J.G. Roberts, Bookouture, and NetGalley for providing me with this book so I may bring you this review.

What He Did is a totally gripping crime thriller that blew me away with her intoxicating storylines. You can always tell it is going to be an amazing read if you hook me from the first page. "What He Did" by J.G. Roberts is the second book in the brilliant Detective Rachel Hart series.
The first book from Julia was called "Little Girl Missing" and I loved both of these books and grabbed me within the first few pages. I could not put it down. What He did was full of twists and turns which I love in a book. One thing that was very good within this book was You could read it as a stand alone book as well. Another sure fire winner for me. I loved the central character DCI Rachel Hart, even though she is yet another tough cookie who can't get her personal life and romantic liaisons right! I think she is endearing because she cares so much for her twin sister Ruth, living in a psychiatric care home/hospital because of what their neighbour did to her as a small child. Rachel Hart is clearly a good leader in that she can direct and organise her detectives but she also recognises that they are human an ...more

What He Did is the second in the police procedural series featuring Detective Rachel Hart. Having missed the first book in the series - Little Girl Missing - I was happy to jump straight in and read this independently without any issues as the author, J. G. Roberts provided enough background to allow me to feel comfortable with the characters and setting. Rachel Hart made a caring, determined detective with plenty of inner reserve and I would have gladly had her on my team.

This is the first Rachel Hart series book I have read. I don't think it made a difference to my reading experience having not read the first one. There is enough information in this book for it to stand alone..

Can you imagine discovering that your husband has been in a serious car crash from a television programme? Even worse what if you are the newsreader actually seeing the pictures for the first time as you follow the autocue to tell your audience all about it?

This is the nightmare a top news anchor finds herself in before rushing from the studio unable to speak about what she's just discovered. Simon Shaw is a successful premier league manager who is lucky to survive his accident but while he li

Worth reading.

This is not an edge of your seat thrill ride. Instead it is a slow paced mystery that you can't help but keep reading because you need to know what happened.

It was easy to connect with the characters and sympathize with their situations, at least with the female characters. It was difficult to connect with the male characters once you realize what he did. Even the innocent suspects didn't invoke sympathy. When you witness a crime and don't report it you beco

This is such a great read. What He Did is the second book to feature Detective Rachel Hart, the first being Little Girl Missing. I haven’t read this book but this doesn’t distract at all from reading What He Did. It can definitely be read alone and the author successfully weaves in pertinent pieces of back story.

This book sees Rachel investigating when her friend’s husband, Simon is involved in a car accident. However Rachel soon learns that is was a far from an accident, and somethi

When Maddy's husband Simon is badly injured in a car crash she turns to her friend Detective Rachel Hart. Something doesn't seem quite right & dash cam view of it shows that it might not have been an accident after all. At first things seem to point to Maddy's daughter's boyfriend. Simon's last conversation with him had been somewhat threatening. When a priest is found murdered in the confessional & a suicide may not be all it seems the link is made to Simon- they were all part of an up ...more
Wow what a striking prologue!! I love a cracking prologue to totally set the scene for a crime thriller and What He Did is no different!

Oh bejeezus!!!! What stories was I unravelling??! The more I read the more I was drawn in…What secrets was Simon keeping? The more Rachel dug, the more of that skeleton she found but would she find the full body so to speak?!

Now I mentioned the prologue but the chase to the end what brilliant and then what came after left me wanting more!

This is the second book in the DCI Rachel Hart series. Compelling reading. It has lots of substance with many well-defined characters. Rachel is a complex character with her background, present circumstances and the ever-patient Tim. I don't think I'd like her as my Boss. She's a good Boss, but humourless and intimidating. There are shoals of red herrings, push-backs and dead-ends as Rachel and her team attempt to figure out the motives and perps for the dead bodies turning up. I became a little ...more

The second book in the Detective Rachel Hart series can be read as a standalone, and it is quite the page-turner. The author does an outstanding job of allowing the reader to follow the case along with Rachel, while also throwing in a few twists along the way that keep it interesting. While the investigation aspect is well-done, the personal side of Rachel’s life is also realistic. Although I did figure a few things out before Rachel did, the author kept me engaged right up to the final page. An ...more

What He Did is the first Detective Rachel Hart book I've read, but that didn't take away from my enjoyment of the read! There is enough context and it is a mystery driven novel so you can join the series at any time without feeling like you are missing a big chunk of backstory.

This is a solid police procedural and an enjoyable read. It blends past and present together well and highlights topical subjects like assults by athletes. Roberts' does a great job teasing bits of information

Detective Rachel Hart returns in book two of this series. We have more insight into her life which added to her character. The book opened at a fast pace, although it was a bit predictable in parts. The central characters of Maddy and Simon, an ex footballer, are living a comfortable life until Simon is injured in a car crash. As Rachel investigates, secrets begin to unfold going back decades to a different country. The plot was very good and as Maddy is a friend of Rachel's I would like to see ...more
