Short essays and poems taken from "Farm Journal", broken into 3 eras of farm life: Beginning, Striving and Rewarding. Some tend to have a more religious tone, but that reflects the era (1977 and earlier) and the region (mostly Midwest). With that being said, I am an atheist, it was really nice to read.
I think this quote reflects the content of the book quite well: "it's easier for you to learn to play than to work, so we'll teach you to work. Instead of joining the country club, we substituted gardening and Saturday afternoon farm work. I don't know how much character we've built into our children by having them chop bull thistles, paint farm buildings, or hold pigs for vaccination, but at least these have been family projects"

Found a note about this book on a journal page of my mother's. Book features snippets from farmer families and offers inspiration for farming life.

Decent book. Good decent. Full of short stories of good down home people, life on the farm, and perspectives we need to hear more often.
