The New American Nation Series

The South in Modern America: A Region at Odds

Rate this book
Grantham (history, Vanderbilt U.) observes that at the end of Reconstruction the South was the nation's poorest, most isolated, and most "distinctive" region. This study is concerned with post-Reconstruction South and its interaction with the rest of the nation, in sectional conflict; compromise and accommodation in the relationship between North and South; regional convergence attributed to such compromise; and regional specificity of the South.
