The overall theme for this book is learning to slowly start and embrace your culture. You need to accept what type of family you have and what type of culture you live, but for some students it may be difficult. This book would be great to read to an ELL, or any student, who feels that they are different. In this book, Pepita is assigned to interview people for a school project. She begins to ask many different animals pretending she can talk to them, and making stories up that she thinks would be very interesting. Then she starts to interview her family members, but thinks that their responses are boring and her class won't enjoy her presentation.
