Sleeping with the Past
Nathaniel is a cop, assigned to protect professor and well-known writer Asher Munro. Asher has been receiving threats, and as the situation gets worse and worse, Nathaniel and Asher have to spend a lot of time together, for Asher's protection.
Their attraction goes far beyond what a policeman should feel for someone under his care, so Nathaniel denies what he feels, even when Asher confronts him with his own needs. Someone wants Asher dead, though, and Nathaniel wants the man very much alive. Can they keep Asher safe and deal with what they feel for each other?

I really enjoyed this book, and really loved the depth of Nathaniel and his own internal conflict about who he was, what he really needed, and how much he loved his daughter and didn't want to affect her life. I also really loved the Professor, his intelligence, his blindspots, his solid self-esteem in being gay and in that giving Nathaniel the room to accept his attraction to Asher.
Loved the language, loved the details of the cabin and the water... *laughs softly* Loved how these guys get where they need to go.

Ryan writes such ambiguous endings landing somewhere between a HFN and HEA. That's never my favourite. I prefer to have things locked down when I know there's not a another story coming. Still, she writes such great characters that I can never resist reading them.
Always a lot of humour and hot chemistry. The story is pretty simple but it's more about these two men falling for each other. If you're looking for a nice comfort read with a couple of hot guys dancing around their issues before taking the plunge, this is a good one for you. I liked it quite a bit.

This was just OK. I've enjoyed other Cassidy Ryan books a lot more than this one. I suggest skipping this one and reading Imperfect or Hit and Run instead.

April 17, 2009Sleeping with the Past can only be defined as a sweet romance with a tinge of suspence.
Asher is a literature professor in a smalltown University with a brilliant parallel career as mystery writer. He is also openly gay and an activist. So when he starts to receive threatening missives, he assumes to have treaded on one more toe, and ignores the matter. But Ellis, his assistant, is not of the same idea and asks help to her father, the handsome detective Nathaniel.
Nat is a single father and a gay in the closet. He has always avoided to be alone with Asher to deny the attraction between them, but when someone nearly kills the professor, he is assigned as his personal bodyguard, and they have to share a lot more time together that he would have wanted.
The mystery is pretty good, Cassidy Ryan gives us three or more possible suspects, and all of them could be the culprit. Maybe from only a clue you can undestand the real villain and I have no intention to say you that.
But as I said I think this one is also a sweet romance: sex is almost nonexistent, but instead there is a lot of sexual tension. I like very much as Cassidy Ryan as chosen to deal with the matter: Nathaniel is a more than 20 years gay in the closet and it would have been quite unbelievable that, all of sudden, he had chosen to coming out, not matter how strong is the attraction he feels for Asher.
Asher instead is very nice, a man really at comfort with his sexuality but who is in love like a teenager with his first crush. But he isn't oppressive and he can wait the right moment to laid his claim on the man he loves.
The book has an open ending, some things are still hanging (not so heavy to not give a close point to the story) and probably they could be a good start for another novel: Asher's family, Nathaniel's family (his daughter and his brother), their lifes after all is happen between them... if so, I would be glad to read it.

I can hardly remember what I read even though it was only a couple of nights ago. It's either early onset of dementia or the book was forgettable. I had to go back and scan over to recall the story and now that I have...somewhat...it's a nice, sweet, comfort read. In this last description's case, 'forgettable' actually works in its favor because when you're in one of those days when you need a comfort read but not in the mood for a Carol Lynne, SWtP might just well be the book to pick or to reread.
The stalker mystery, apart from being passe and a convenient ploy, is negligible, as is expected in these MM romances. But - the romance between Nathaniel and Asher is um...sweet:) It was a strong HFN and I can believe in a long, long HEA for these two guys.

I enjoyed reading this but at times I did get a bit....confused is the wrong word but felt that Asher moved from a put together, strong guy to a bit 'girly' and back again. I know in the book he does question if he's becoming a 14 yo girl, and I liked those bits as he was questioning his thoughts but at other times he did act it to me,
Whilst not long in elapsed time, because the two guys are spending time 24hr a day, the actual getting to know you time is quite long, and I liked the slow build in their relationship.
Whilst Nathaniel has known he was gay from age 12 (I think) he's not acted on his feelings before so I thought the ending was a bit too easy - maybe to tie the book up quickly - to me it was really the beginning.

I really liked it up until the last quarter of the book, which felt a little rushed. One important issue I was looking forward to wasn't dealt with, and I was surprised when I got to the end. If there's a sequel planned, my rating would go up to a solid 4.

I enjoyed these MC's. I didn't think the book matched the title very well and the MC's are a little older than the picture on the cover, other than that a very entertaining read I will put on my to-be-read again list.

I found this story on my nook and gave it a go. It was almost done with it when I realized I'd actually already read it. Nice easy read though.
