On some lucky day long ago, I was as a young teen taken to shop in a bookstore. It was something my father began; we lived in a small town with no booksellers, a tiny library with no discernible means...even our schools had no libraries, although each elementary classroom had a small shelf of dogeared books ranged along the back wall. In any case, whenever we were taken on a trip to a large metropolitan center, which we did several times a year, Dad would take us to a bookstore, where we were allowed to buy one book. Any book we wanted. These bookstore visits were, to me, magical.
At one point, I had the wisdom to choose this marvellous anthology, I Am a Sensation. Filled with poetry both classic and modern, art and photography of all sorts, it is a brilliant collection calculated to fire the imagination and the mind. I have owned this book, and by now am on a third copy (must have this one spiral bound to help it last longer!), for forty odd years. It remains my single most prized volume. So much so, I hunted down three copies and now each of my daughters owns one.
The thing that continues to delight and amaze me is that Goldberg somehow managed to piece together a collection that would have enduring appeal. This book is readable, absorbing, addictive across the span of one's years. Hunt one down, give it a go. You will never regret it.
