Hillary Raz wants nothing to do with her ex, Alec Thompson when he blows into town after leaving her for football five years earlier. Unfortunately, her bunny has other ideas. The energetic rabbit doesn’t care about a silly thing like a broken heart, she just wants to get her tiny paws on the bear shifter who is her true mate. But even though Alec claims he’s going to stay, Hillary doesn’t trust he’s back for good, or that she’ll ever be more important than his career.
Alec Thompson’s football career is over. After a devastating injury destroys his superstar status, he returns home to the small shifter town of Heartland to heal and to reconnect with the woman he shouldn’t have left behind. But Hillary’s still healing too, and even though he’ll do whatever it takes to claim his fated mate, it may be too late for Hillary and Alec to find a second chance at love.
V. Vaughn is also known as Violet Vaughn and is a USA Today Bestselling author. Violet lives on an island in Maine and spends almost every day walking through the woods. She may have seen a bear once or twice....
He came to her because balls was no longer an option. His career was over. So plan B. Mate. Heroine was well and truly, second best.
“He wonders if he has to choose HER over football to prove his love for her”. - HOW? Your knee is shot and you came to her with your tail between your legs because said football career is over because of career shattering injury. How are you going to choose football over her? Oh that’s right, he won’t. And because we read shifter romance, author thinks we’re bimbos and we won’t remember this. Just like people think I’m an idiot because I’m wearing lipstick!
I hold her hand in both of my trembling ones and look deep into her eyes. I see all I need to know she is my everything; she is my forever.
4.5 stars!
The bear/bunny fated mates is one of my favorite tropes in the shifter world, and I am so glad I discovered this book on freebie day! Alec and Hillary were high school sweethearts; the quarterback and the cheerleader determined to conquer the world together. However when Alec gets recruited by the NFL, he makes the biggest mistake of his life in abandoning his mate for his future career.
Five years later, after a career-ending injury, Alec finds his way back to his hometown--where the community welcomes him back with open arms--and to Hillary--who wants nothing to do with him. As Alec discovers how deeply his departure affected Hillary, he finally realizes the lengths he is willing to go to in order to keep her in his life...forever. Their romance was fraught with guilt, pain, and plenty of false starts as Hillary strives to forgive Alec for his previous callous behavior as she slowly learns to trust him again. I loved how determined Alec was in his goal of proving his love to Hillary, and their reunion was equally sexy and heartfelt. I will definitely be on the lookout for more books by this author!
Tropes: fated mates, secondchance romance, high school sweethearts, alpha hero, scorned heroine, small town romance, slight OM drama, will they/won't they, slow burn, found family, STEAMY🔥
In a community where the next mayor might be a horse and cats and wolves chase each other for fun, a bunny has had her heart broken by a football bear.
Sweet second chance love story. Loved that she’s a bunny shifter! Too cute! Hillary is the bunny shifter and Alec is a bear shifter. They were in love all through high school, but then Alec broke her heart when he got an offer to play pro football. He didn’t ask Hillary to come with him; he thought only of himself. 5 or 6 years later, he can’t play anymore due to an injury, so he returns home. He realized his mistake of leaving Hillary, so he sets out to win her back. The romance is really sweet and there are some spicy moments. I had a hard time with the fact that he would not have come back home if he wasn’t injured. It felt a bit too much like he would’ve been fine living life without her. I was thinking that his bear side wasn’t allowing healing because the bear missed Hillary, but that’s not the way things went. That would’ve been a cool way to take the story line though! I still really liked the chemistry between Alec and Hillary, and the writing flows nicely. Entertaining shifter romance! Also, love that the story takes place in a shifter town! Too fun! Quick, interesting, enjoyable read!
Hillary Raz wants nothing to do with her ex, Alec Thompson. He left her and the town five years ago for football and never looked back. Unfortunately, her bunny is still set on him being her mate.
This was an ok read. I didn’t love it because it's hard for me to imagine a fated mate just leaving for five years without a word. It just doesn’t work for me. I didn’t like Alec from the beginning because of this. He never really grew on me either, which is why this is getting such a low rating.
Hillary was an energetic woman. I liked her but it was hard for me to love these two because of how Alec treated her in the past. His current actions don’t make it up for me. Yes, he was just a teenager when he left her for football but it still really bothers me.
Overall, this was ok. I liked the idea of the town of Heartland. A fully shifter town sounded really interesting but this couple didn’t work for me.
It’s supposed to be about second chances, but honestly I don’t think Alec deserved a second chance. For someone who supposedly thought of his lost mate daily it took him a long time to remember her at the beginning, and the fact that the only reason he wants her back is because football (his true love) is no longer an option. So no she will always be his second best.
I really wanted to like this but I didn't enjoy it and ended up DNFing.
First there was almost no groveling, which I expected and I thought it wouldn't bother me but it did a little.
Then Alec until he had no dream THAT'S when he realized he had always loved Hillary and they were mates. During the last 5 yrs that didn't matter but now that he doesn't know what to do then he will search Hillary and NOW it mattered they were mates as if they had not been the last 5 yrs.
And Hillary hinted at what she had suffered when he dumped her but I never actually felt her hurt, I mean 2 days and she was kissing him and being with him all day.
It was just her trying to play hard to get while already forgiving him but not admiting it because "trust issues" she needed to trap him on the town first.
Which I understand she wanted to make sure he would not run away again but she was so focused on where he was going to work now instead of really building a relationship with him and healing all previous issues.
I didn't want her to be with him because she was sure that he would stay in town, but because she trusted him that if he stayed or went away he would bring him with her this time.
That whenever he went they would be together not only because he would now live in the same town she lives in.
Their relationship felt lowkey toxic and rushed.
I only wanted a bear and bunny cuddling and some angst but sadly this book was not for me.
Delightful second chance romance between Alec, bear shifter and injured NFL quarterback, returning home to his one and only true love, Hillary, bunny shifter. Facing a lot of changes in his life, Alex must prove to Hillary he regrets leaving her and has never stopped loving her. She has to be very wary, his leaving her 6 years ago almost destroyed her, she won't survive it if he leaves her again. So, the story goes, Alex learns about himself and his past mistakes. Hillary must see if she can overcome her past pain and learn to trust again. They both love each other, but can they trust each other, again?
This book is a fantastic example of how when one door closes another opens. Well in this case it’s reopens. I really enjoyed how the author didn’t hold anything back with this second chance romance. Alec really had to find his center and learn what is truly important before he could win back his lady love. Which is more than a little difficult when it keeps getting pushed into your face. The characters felt very realistic as they struggled towards their HEA and it made the story all the better for it. I really enjoyed this book and I’m looking forward to reading more by this author.
Alec left home for his chance at a career in football. He also left Hillary behind too. He was gone for a long time, but when something threatened his career, he remembered someone he left behind. Question is, does Hillary want him back? Love the idea of Heartland, a town where Shifters can be Shifters without fear of discovery. I read out of sequence, but didn't seem to matter, but complete understanding of a couple's back story would have helped. But enough was said that it didn't stop from understanding or enjoying it.
I really wanted to love this story but in the end all I could find it in my heart to do was to like this book. It started off with so much promise then it just started to drone on with meaningless details and boring conversations that didn't add anything to the plot or the likeability of the main characters. I had to put the book aside read another few and return it later.
I loved the first book and the intro to Heartland and I love that even though the books are paranormal stories they deal with very human subjects that are relatable.
Hillary and Alex have some big issues to deal with, trust, and learning what really important for both is just part of the issue. Heartland is the best place to work at them and see how things go.
I bought this book during the stuff your kindle event that just happened due to the description. Let me just say that being able to read a book again after almost a month of not reading since most books I currently have are too long felt absolutely amazing! This is such a quick read and it's a second chance and c'mon who isn't a sucker for second chance romance. Hehe it also has a man groveling and man am I a sucker for groveling 😛😛😛
I read it. The story line was ok. I understand that they knew each other from before but I still feel that something was missing from the story. It could be that they got back together too easily but again they are mates so it should be easy. To me there was just something missing within the story.
Alec a bear shifter who left home to become a football player. Hillary is left behind when Alec goes to play in the NFL. Alec and Hillary are mates but have gone separate ways. Can they rekindle their romance and find their HEA. Once again this author makes you love the characters and become so involved with their story.
Heartland Shifters Book 2 is a seriously emotional journey. Hillary and Alec were high school sweethearts and mates. Instead of marrying his mate or taking her with him when he got drafted by the NFL 5 years ago he left het behind. Now he’s back home and wants a second chance. Will he get one?
DNF after the first few chapters. Alec only came back to town because of his injury. He chose football over her and abandoned her for years with no contact. He didn’t grovel and made it all about what he wants and his injury. Had he not had the injury he most likely won’t have come back for her. Hard to root for a ‘mated’ couple whose story starts off like that.
Alex and Hillary are proof that if you're meant to be together, you will be at some point. This is a great book and I'm sure you will enjoy it! I highly recommend this book! ❤❤❤❤❤
This story was incredible, exciting, and just plain fantastic!!!. It has a fantastic storyline that is so touching, entertaining and moving. V.Vaughn is a Phenomenal storyteller and writer😎😍.
This is a new take on shifters. Who'd think of cross-species mating as in predator and prey?!? Plus talk about a dual personality! I did find the book fun and interesting. There is a huge variety of shifters. I'll have to check out more of the series.
Love the bunny who wants to get it on! This story struggled through so real world struggles but was a light pleasant read. Not overly exciting but a good progression, kept the pages turning.
Your basic boy gets girl boy leaves girl for career boy loses career returns home. Boy needs to find job and prove to girl he plans to stay. A great little romance
Second chance for love. It took an Injury for to return home. Heartland is a shifter town. It sounds amazing. Great story. Looking forward for the next adventure.
V. Vaughn does it again with another sweet story in the Heartland Shifters series. The storyline was great with a HEA. I was given an ARC and voluntarily reviewed it.
