Biking to work can save someone loads of money and lots of calories - all the while, the earth, too. Like a roadmap for the future, this guide teaches bikers how to make a difference in their bodies, wallets, and communities - and get to work - today.
This is a helpful book for those just familiarizing themselves with bicycle commuting or biking for casual recreation in general.
Sarig gets into some pretty technical details about the various mechanical parts of the bike, describing each function in meticulous detail. To be honest, I skipped over these pages. But he also provides a helpful image of a bicycle with each part labeled, which is very helpful for the layperson trying to learn up from down on their new bicycle.
The section on nutrition was, from my view, laughably out of date. But to each his own. In general, the book is chock full of useful and relevant information to a new bicyclist and well worth reading or skimming.
A handy dandy guide that covers just about everything you might need to know about biking. Not only does it cover the sustainable, fun, cheap, fun, and fun aspects of biking, but it also covers many practical issues from purchasing decisions to maintenance to hardware to proper biking nutrition and attire. I gave it 3 stars because it was a tad repetitive and a little in depth on the technical side for a beginner. I'm sure I could come back to this book when I start to have questions about my first bike, though, and probably appreciate it more then.
Lots of information packed into a small book. This book is great for a beginner biker, it includes how to find, repair and ride a bike. I skimmed over the maintenance sections. But I know that if something on my bike breaks I will be able to use it for reference.
I can't wait to start biking to work everyday to my new job in Wisconsin. Thank goodness for a community that invested in a good public bike trail system!
An excellent introduction to bicycle commuting and bicycling in general. It covers topics including what gear to use, how to choose a bike, how to choose a route, basic repairs, etc.
