About the author

Don Coldsmith was an American author of primarily Western fiction. A past president of Western Writers of America, Coldsmith wrote more than 40 books, as well as and hundreds of newspaper and magazine articles. His “Spanish Bit Saga,” a series of related novels, helped to re-define the Western novel by adopting the point of view of the Native Americans, rather than the European immigrants.

This was the best of the three Coldsmith books I've read. The rest of the series is unavailable in our libraries and will be hard to get.

Too bad. This is a good series. It is full of relevant Indian history and lore. It is well written and interesting. I come away from these readings understanding Indian life in the 16th and 17 the centuries much better than before.

These books were recommended by current, young Indian authors and well worth reading. I will seek out others of the series over time.

A quick, entertaining read. Picked this up at a Colorado Visitor's Center free library. Read it on the 5-hour flight home. It's what I'd call a native American fairy tale, and when seen as just that, it satisfies. Nicely entertaining. Admirable main characters. Suspense and worry for the medicine men on a quest to save their people via bringing the buffalo back to their territory. Magic and spirituality.

I love Westerns and this book is...okay. It reads a lot more like a historian was writing it and less of a storyteller. There's no drama, and it's a bit of a dud by the time you get to the end. High suspense, you're excited to read it, but at the end it falls flat.

A quick read. Not a cowboy and Indians story but Indians in the 16th and earlier 17th century here in the US Two Medicine men from different tribes on a quest to bring the buffalo back to the tall grass.

Very good "Western" story. It's actually not like your normal American Western tale. Lots of nicely developed characters and a nice continuing storyline. Recommended
