We met Carlton Guthrie, The Scoundrel of St. Giles, in the earlier books of the series and developed a love/hate relationship with him. Was he saint or sinner? Now, we get to meet the real man and we can decide for ourselves. There was a lot going on in this book and while I was left with questions about some things, none of them really had to do with the HEA, the mystery, or its resolution. You don’t have to have read

Desperate times call for desperate measures!

The trope is familiar. A powerful man having come from nothing is now a force to be reckoned with in the infamous St Giles.
Carlton Guthrie holds many secrets and he's sworn to take his revenge for a dardastardly deed that destroyed his childhood.
Lady Regina Berkly, the daughter of the Earl of Hedgewick, flees from an unwanted marriage foisted on her by her usually doting father. Of course there's something havey cavey about the whole affair. Her future

Regina is a dutiful daughter. She has known forever that she will marry for the convenience of her parents. She is disappointed in their choice however, and finds the nerve to run away the morning of her wedding.

The Scoundrel of St. Giles is well known for his dastardly deeds, even by sweet and innocent Regina. Yet, he provides her safety, food, comfort and isn't at all the villain she thought he was. But Regina doesn't know Carlton's past and why he is so determined to keep her with him.

When Carlton Guthrie, infamous as the Scoundrel of St. Giles, stumbles upon a runaway bride wandering the Dials at dawn, it turns out to be his lucky day. The runaway happens to be Lady Regina Berkly, daughter of the Earl of Sedgewick, the man on whom Carlton seeks to have revenge for his father's murder. Carlton offers help and shelter to Regina, but not out of the kindness of his heart. Using the daughter to get to the father seems perfect until Carlton begins to fall for her.

After a great meet cute, the story took a bit to pick up. But it was well worth it once it did and I’m glad I stuck with it. Carlton was a great almost anti-hero and I loved his backstory. Regina was a great heroine for him and I was glad to see them get their HEA.

Regina had always been "the dutiful daughter, the proper young lady who never who never strayed from protocol and always behaved with decorum. She could simply walk out the front door and vanish." Runaway bride Regency style! Of course it was going to be a forced marriage by her father and it just could not be....
So she did run without thought and literally ran into her fate. Not that she would know that for awhile, but Carlton Guthrie, known as the Scoundrel of St. Giles saw his

Regina has always known her father would arrange a marriage for her and that although no a love match, her future husband would be approved by her father and that love could grow from a marriage of convenience. What she didn’t see coming was her father agreeing to marry her to a sickly child of 14!

Seeing no way out, Regina runs away. Sheltered and with no real idea what to expected out in the real world, Regina finds herself in St. Giles and accepting help from the least likely of people,

I really couldn’t connect to this book so it was a DNF at 25%. I really struggled to connect with the characters, the storyline and the writing (although I have read and enjoyed this author before).

For me the believability of what I read so far was very low. The heroine literally is running away from home to escape an arranged marriage to a 14 year old boy when she happens upon a man she recognised as the Scoundrel of St Giles and he offers her residence to escape her situation and she accepts.

The Forgotten Duke, by Sophie Barnes, is available through booksellers 1-28-20. Forgotten is book 5 in Ms Barnes Diamonds In The Rough series. I believe this is my first read of Ms Barnes work. I must say I'm impressed. I wish it were possible to rate in half stars, I'd give Forgotten a solid 4.5. I intend to backtrack and try out the first 4 stories. I'm curious if they'd stand up to my expectations of Ms Barnes writing (high). I've found most historical romance books to be a bit of ...more

When informed of her impending marriage the day before, Lady Regina is surprised but resigned… until she meets the groom and discovers he’s a sickly 14-year-old who’s much more horrified by the idea of marriage than she is. Running away is the only escape option she has.

Except it absolutely wasn’t, since she had a loving older brother who would totally have helped her out. Regina was the literal epitome of the too-stupid-to-live heroine and I wanted to strangle her pretty much continuously

Lady Regina has always done whatever her family asked of her. Even if she has detested something, she has done it. However, when her father arranges for her to be married to a mere child, Regina cannot go through with it. Regina sets off in the early morning to escape that fate.

Carlton Guthrie isn't called "the scoundrel of St. Giles" for nothing. When Regina runs into his arms, he cannot believe his good fortune. Once, long ago, Regina's father ruined him, and Carlton isn't about to pass up his

I received an ARC of this book through NetGalley in exchange for a fair review. The Forgotten Duke by Sophie Barnes is the fifth book in her intriguing Diamonds in the Rough series. It can be read as a stand-alone but I have enjoyed reading the previous books and do recommend them. Carlton Guthrie the scoundrel of St. Giles is certainly not going to let opportunity pass him by when the bedraggled bride he rescues turns out to be the daughter of the man he's been planning revenge on since he was ...more

Honestly, I needed some bubblegum for the brain. Any historical fiction romance usually does the job. The naughty parts really aren’t that graphic and the author focuses more on her characters and their growing attachment to each other, which I appreciate. Overall, just a nice way to spend a couple hours on a Saturday. ...more

Having spent the last 20 years with revenge on his mind, Carlton Guthrie now has the means to act on that revenge when Regina, his nemesis' daughter, lands in his arms and he saves her from the streets of St. Giles. What follows is a story of intrigue, danger, betrayal, secrets, all mixed in with passion.

The story gripped me from the first page to the last one, there are many tense scenes as well as many emotional ones and when secrets are revealed, you can't help but hold your breath until

Carlton Guthrie, also known as The Scoundrel of St. Giles, has built himself an empire as a powerful crime lord, though his true identity is of much higher birth. Twenty years ago, while only a child of thirteen, his father, his home, and his very existence, were snatched away in a brutal act. Since that time, Guthrie has desired revenge on the man who stole everything from him, Charles Berkly, the Earl of Hedgewick. Two previous attempts by

The Forgotten Duke is book 5 in the diamonds in the rough series by Sophie Barnes and in opinion the slowest paced book of all the series. I think that this is due to her attempt at building up the mystery of the disappearing women from Carlton Guthrie’s establishment and not because the book is not phenomenal.

Lady Regina becomes a runaway bride when she is being made to marry the Marques of Stokes, slated to become the Duke of Windham. He turns out to be nothing but a child without much to

Y'all, "The Forgotten Duke" let me tell you-

I'm a total judger of books by their covers. This is my first Sophie Barnes novel because (brace yourself) I don't like the font on her more recent book covers. It's too thin. I'm glad I took the high road and looked past the font (and the hero's peach fuzz cuz he can't even grow it) and read this book. Because I very much enjoyed it.

I liked the first half of the book but found it lacked a sharp, underlying intensity. The right words were there but

Who doesn't enjoy a story that is at least in part about a runaway bride? While not a completely common trope in Regency literature, we do I sometimes see an aspect of this in historical romantic fiction. While I enjoyed parts of this book, other aspects of it detracted from my enjoyment, namely issues with the heroine.

Let me tell you first what I liked. I thought the hero was very nuanced, a man who is tortured and conflicted by his somewhat dubious past. But there is more to him, certainly,

WHOA!!! What a suspenseful, tension filled, action packed romance. I loved this story. There are so many twists and turns it literally had me inside out of my skin at times. The characters are amazing. They are fleshed out and well developed. The plot and subplots completely unexpected. There is even some laughable humor sprinkled in there. The innocence and naivete of the h never went to the point of exasperation. She was intelligent and extremely inquisitive. The situation she found herself in ...more

The Forgotten Duke tells a familiar story, but does it so well it feels like a something new. I was immediately swept up in Regina's troubles and had no trouble rooting for her happy ending. She's not a perfect person and makes mistakes throughout the story, but she always means well. Her kidnapping was unexpected and added another layer to her character.
