In this early work, J. Hillis Miller works to unite all of Dickens's work under the project of Dickens's "imagination." Concentrates a lot on the nature of Dickens's characterization and what his techniques of characterization reveal about Dickens's attitude toward the world.

This is an older edition, but the writing, compared to today's criticism, is polished and intelligent. The pages on "David Copperfield" are written with great empathy and research.
