Love. What is it? Who can feel it? Under what conditions does love cease to exist? Should bad people who do terrible things be able to feel love, and can we as outsiders comprehend that despite their callous violence Epitafio and Estela are, in fact, in love. At times the pace of this book left me breathless. Monge's work disorients and exhausts the reader, and the effect is to make us feel as confused and lost as its characters.

Almost no one in the world of this novel is happy, good, or redeemable, yet at some point we start to care for Estela and Epitafio.
