A Practical, Biblical, Step-by-step Guide for Christian Counseling.
In Telling the Truth to Troubled People, Dr. Backus integrates both biblical and psychological facts to show pastors, lay counselors and Christian psychologists how to help people overcome their problems. In easily understood writing style, Dr. Backus provides the reader information on various psychological disorders, including a complete index for easy reference.--Evaluation and application of counseling techniques.--Explanation of clinical terminology.--Illustrations from case histories and dialogue samples for further amplification of the material. Review questions at the end of each chapter make this book an ideal group study for a lay counseling class.
Even though I don't plan to use this information in a formal way, I found it extremely useful just to understand people better in general as well as some of those who I know have diagnoses.
This Christian counseling book required careful study rather than casual reading. I liked the author's premise that clients need "truth therapy" to counter "misbeliefs" about their problems. Biblical truths combined with "cognitive psychology" fosters "healing dialogue" that can enable behavior change. There were many useful case studies and chapters on various mental health issues. Highly recommended for counselors interested in this unique approach to treatment.
