The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

Rate this book
Penguin Readers is a series of simplified novels, film novelizations and original titles that introduce students at all levels to the pleasures of reading in English. Originally designed for teaching English as a foreign language, the series' combination of high interest level and low reading age makes it suitable for both English-speaking teenagers with limited reading skills and students of English as a second language. Many titles in the series also provide access to the pre-20th century literature strands of the National Curriculum English Orders.

This was a quick reading with good characters. Kinda reminds me another book of this type, brief adventures, simple but beautiful writing, school stories and a little town. Heart by Edmondo de Amicis, if you liked this, then read that book.

[Penguin Readers Beginner (Level 1)]

Genre: Fiction/ English Graded Readers/ Classics/ Adaptation
Pages: 27
Rating: 6.5/10

Theme: Intelligence/ Moral and Social Maturation

Opener:
“Tom Sawyer lived with his aunt because his mother and father were dead. Tom didn’t like going to school, and he didn’t like working. He liked playing and having adventures. One Friday, he didn’t go to school — he went to the river.”

Summary:
Tom, an orphan who lives with his Aunt Polly, is a playful boy. His close friend, Huck, hasn’t got a family, is homeless, and doesn’t go to school. Tom and Huck have several adventures together; they witness Injun Joe kill a doctor, clear Muff Potter’s name when he is accused of murder, and see Injun Joe find a lot of money. Tom and his friend, Becky, get lost for three days in a cave. While looking for their way out, Tom sees Injun Joe. Later, Tom and Huck go back to the cave and find the money Injun Joe had hidden there. Huck is adopted by Mrs. Douglas. Now, he has a home and goes to school, but he finds it hard to fit in and runs away. Tom, however, convinces him to return. Background

Final Review:
Have not read the actual novel, but I got the feeling that the story was complete in this adaptation. Of course, many things need to be left out in any adaptation and I’m sure that is the case here too, but as it is, I believed it to be a competent adaptation and an enjoyable read.

It is a great book. I like the story. And I recommend my students to read it as their extensive reading material to improve their vocabularies.

This story teaches to remain optimistic in all difficult situations: be ready to rescue, be able to enjoy ordinary things. And it's a good story to increase your no very high level of English
