When I was little, on vacation I read the little hardcovers from the green and pink collections, already considered « old books » back then. So imagine how surprised I was to find some at the used book store on my vacation town this year. Obviously, I bought some. And it's still as delightful as it was a quarter of century ago.

The book being from the seventies, opening it is another kind of time-travel itself, for the best and worse. It would be absolutely impossible for six teenagers to cross the whole France on scooters without being murdered at some point today. On the other side, Mady and Cécile, the group's only two girls, are often more clever than their male companions, but they spend more time on the kitchen preparing the team's meals than with them... while the injured dog can accompany the boys !

So, the book's age IS apparent. Not only through this kind of details, but also because the storytelling is much less tame than the books aimed towards the same age group now. The bad guys open fire on teenagers, Kafi's injuries are precisely described... It makes the danger feeling more real, especially since all events are realistic. No over-the-top twists or magic, but problems like bad weather or tides slow down the characters... and the story.

Our heroes quite hover at the same point and wander repetitively between the coast and the islands, even if it's never without reason. So, we don't get bored, but action really arrives late.

It doesn't means we don't spend a good time. The book shows its age, but its wrinkles look goregous.

7/10, generously rounded up to 4 stars
