For the new Christmas season, this beautiful collection of wildlife art by the popular Robert Bateman is, as New York Times Book Review calls it, "The wildlife art book of the year". Color paintings and black-and-white plates.
Robert Bateman is a wonderful artist. Most painters before him gave little attention to animals. They rarely appeared in serious paintings, and those which were present appeared as mere adjuncts to a human portrait or landscape, with little effort given to their rendition. Bateman broke relatively new ground by painting them in painstaking and realistic detail. This book and Bateman's comments on the pictures included also shows how carefully composed and interlocking all elements in each painting are. It gave me a new appreciation for Bateman's work.
Robert Bateman is truly a wonderful artist! Lots of beautiful paintings and sketches were shown throughout the book. It was fascinating to learn the inspiration for and the process behind his different works of art. There was also a lot of information about the artist's life and the experiences that lead him to become a wildlife painter.
The second of 3 editions (that I know of), presenting some of Bateman's best on high quality paper in a high quality book.
The large pages and the printing quality make these books must-have for any art-lover. Even animal-lovers would be well served with these beautiful paintings.
My only regret is that I can't bring myself to tear out and have some of the pages framed to display on my walls. Not only would that damage the books, but it would also mean that the image appearing on the back of the page I had framed would be lost to sight.
Always an immense pleasure to take these volumes out and just casually go thru admiring the depth and details of each painting.
Should I ever win the lotery, I would absolutely get a Bateman original!
