Julia Justiss grew up breathing the scent of sea air near the colonial town of Annapolis, Maryland, a fact responsible for two of her life-long passions: sailors and history! By age twelve she was a junior tour guide for Historic Annapolis, conducting visitors on walking tours through the city that was a hotbed of revolutionary fervor. (Annapolis hosted its own tea party, dispensing with the cargo aboard the "Peggy Stewart," and was briefly capital of the United States.) She also took tourists through Annapolis's other big attraction, the United States Naval Academy. After so many years of observing future naval officers at P-rade and chapel, it seemed almost inevitable that she eventually married one.

But long before embarking on romantic adventures of her own, she read about them, transporting herself to such favorite venues as ancient Egypt, World War II submarine patrols, the Old South and, of course, Regency England. Soon she was keeping notebooks for jotting down story ideas. From plotting adventures for her first favorite heroine Nancy Drew she went on to write poetry in high school and college, then worked as a business journalist doing speeches, sales promotion material and newsletter articles. After her marriage to a naval lieutenant took her overseas, she wrote the newsletter for the American Embassy in Tunis, Tunisia and traveled extensively throughout Europe. Before leaving Tunis, she fulfilled her first goal: completing a Regency novel.

Children intervened, and not until her husband left the Navy to return to his Texas homeland did she sit down to pen a second novel. The reply to her fan mail letter to a Regency author led her to Romance Writers of America. From the very first meeting, she knew she'd found a home among fellow writers--doubtless the largest group of people outside a mental institution who talk back to the voices in their heads.

Her second goal was achieved the day before her birthday in May, 1998 when Margaret Marbury of Harlequin Historicals offered to buy that second book, the Golden-Heart-Award winning novel that became THE WEDDING GAMBLE. Since then, she has gone on to write fourteen novels, three novellas and an on-line serial, along the way winning or finalling for historical awards from The Golden Quill, the National Reader’s Choice, Romantic Times, and All About Romance’s Favorite Book of the Year.

Julia now inhabits an English Georgian-style house she and her husband built in the East Texas countryside where, if she closes her eyes and ignores the summer thermometer, she can almost imagine she inhabits the landscape of "Pride and Prejudice." In between travelling to visit her three children (a naval officer son stationed in Washington, DC, a textiles and design major daughter who cheers for University of Texas at Austin, and a mechanical engineering major son also at UT Austin) keeping up with her science teacher husband and juggling a part-time day job as a high school French teacher, she pursues her first and dearest love--crafting stories.

To relax, she enjoys watching movies, reading (historical fiction, mystery, suspense) and puttering about in the garden trying to kill off more weeds than flowers.

The Awakening of Miss Henley by Julia Justiss is a 2019 Harlequin Historical publication.

Marvelous!

Emma had resigned herself to spinsterhood- quite deliberately. She plans to sabotage her fifth and final ‘season’ so that she may find a place of her own and proceed to do the work she feels passionate about. There is only one hitch in her plans- Lord Theo.

Theo is a notorious rake under pressure to finally settle down. He plans to skirt matrimony for as long a humanly possible. But he never toys with virginal young ladies- yet Miss Emma Henley is a temptation he’s finding hard to resist.

As the couple continues to engage in witty verbal exchanges, they slowly relax into friendship territory. But the chemistry between them in undeniable. Because neither party is willing to marry, Emma believes there is no harm in enjoying a dalliance with Theo. She doesn’t have much to lose and is sure she can survive a scandal. But how will Theo react if he knew her true feelings for him?

I loved Emma and Theo’s story! The banter between the couple is wildly entertaining and I loved the way Emma kept catching Theo off guard. The relationships develop perfectly, and it was a joy to see love blossom between two people who thought true love wasn't in the cards for them. Each gave the other a piece of themselves that had been missing, a desire they had buried, and completed one another perfectly.

This a such a wonderful love story. It’s mature, but sexy, smart, emotional, with well-drawn characters, and I truly enjoyed the artistic backdrop. The beautiful happily ever after for a well deserving couple, is the cherry on top

I enjoyed every single minute of it!!

I have to report that Miss Henley's awakening put me right to sleep. Well, this book was on sale at only 99 cents, so mostly what I lost by reading it was time. But time is something I have in my stay-at-home pandemic life so maybe I shouldn't complain. But I will anyway, because this story was boring. Really boring. And it had a been-there, done-that plot. Yes, I realize that it is hard to find a historical romance with a unique plot, but at least the author could make an effort to freshen it up a bit.

It's one of those unlikely romances. A bluestocking, independent-minded heroine, interested in politics and altruistic endeavors, who is not pretty but, rather, known for her plainness. She does not want to lose her independence and her political and social leanings by marrying a man who will want to control her. Looking for love, you know, and an understanding mate. They don't seem to exist.

And then there's our hero. He's a very, very good-looking (we are told ad infinitum) second (or third or something?) son of a peer and spends his life in wine, women and other hedonistic activities. Always romantically/sexually involved with beautiful, experienced women. H and h develop an unlikely friendship because she tells it like it is, not stinting on her criticisms of how he is wasting his life.

So, yada, yada. I won't tell you what happens because, let's face it, you already know. If this book hadn't taken itself so seriously I might have enjoyed it more. Nothing witty or funny here. No really interesting dialogue. A plot that the reader has already figured out completely by the second page. Julia Justiss is an HR author who has been around a long time. Why hasn't she spent that time making her books more interesting to read?

The h is plain, no-one is going to offer for her, so her decision is to withdraw from society, as she the means to support herself - just. At the same time, the H discovers that he enjoys her company. She wants to know more about being with a man, and he agrees to show her. It should have been good, but he didn't seem very mature, she was sad and rather silly. I enjoyed their sweet, silly romance.

My review:

Can a plain miss, determined to not marry, discover passion in the arms of a renowned rake and leave unscathed.

As I am slowly reading one by one the talented authors published by Harlequin Historical, regularly I discover new-authors-to-me.
Mrs Julia Justiss is one of them today. And for sure, Emma and Theo’s story will not be my last. I’m already eager to read the next installments in this series.

How to not love Miss Emma Henley, she is clever, witty, generous and rather independent for a woman of her time.
I digress, I wondered during which period the plot was set? Probably Regency, the clothes descriptions make me think.
She is also strong willed and won’t settle for half-measures. When she could have left bitterness surround herself, after a life of inconsequent and tactless verbal abuses. She is no diamond of the first water, but still a living being with emotions and feelings.
I even felt sorry for her suitor at the opening scene, he is really blunt and inconsiderate in his honesty, which hurt her but beauty standards wound them both, and made them feel inferior.
I do admired Emma’s need to live life at the fullest, even taking inconsiderate risks to sample the true taste of the freedom only men can enjoy.
She is amenable even to face ruin or scandal.
My only reserve was when she quite forced Theo’s hand. She knew he was an honorable man, I quite disliked she compelled him to continue their relationship when he explained why he thought it was not right. And after she doubted him of being fickle, when she has no proof of the contrary, herself easy to judge him on his appearance.
Theo is not the cad he appears in the eyes of the society, even if it has become like a second skin, he masquerades his way of life. When once upon a time he has other dreams he would have pursued instead of loosing himself in mindless carousing, gambling and other brainless pleasures.
Him being a spare, leaves him freedom to do as much as he likes but to also be easily dismissed by his family, as he is of few importance.

Mrs Justiss constructed an incredibly wondrous slow-burn romance, with flawed and lively characters. There was no sizzling chemistry at first, only a keen interest when their “first secondly” meet.
Then their interactions flourished when Theo realized he enjoyed and even looked forward to their path crossing. The tiny spark of interest moved to a tempest that shook both senses.
When at first they playfully battle with barbs and quips, they soon shared their deeper thoughts and hopes.
Theo sees Emma beyond her so called ordinary appearance, he is drawn by her gaze sending lightning when animated, and those sensual lips calling to him. When Emma encourages him to follow his own forgotten dreams, to not allow Society rules to forbid him to enjoy the simple activity that fulfills his longing for something else.
Together they will grow stronger, but will it be enough to alter and curb their so mapped out plans.

I so enjoyed this brilliant tale of giving character a chance over appearance, that next year is far away to wait for the next story.
5 stars.

I was granted an advance copy by the author but I had prior to it preordered my own.

Occasionally I find a book that leaves me wanting more. This is one of them. If I didn't have a pile of books that I had already promised to read, I would have dived right back in and started reading from the beginning again. I loved the development of the relationship between Theo and Emma, their verbal sparring and the slow recognition of their attraction for one another. As Emma provokes Theo into exploring more meaningful options for his future, he comes truly alive for the first time in his life. Emma, used to being denigrated and ignored by society, emerges from her protective shell under the teasing attention showered on her by Theo. Together they form a friendship that grows into love based on mutual respect and appreciation for one another's talents. When Theo disappears at a crucial time in their relationship, it really pulled at my heartstrings and I felt their frustration. Nevertheless, the end result is well thought out and beautiful. Although this novel is a part of a series, it is a standalone and put a smile on my face. I received a copy of this book as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.

Miss Emma Henley knows she’s neither pretty nor rich enough to land a husband. Instead she’s thrown her passion into good causes. This Season she’s enjoying the verbal sparring with Lord Theo. The dashing rake is just as determined to stay unwed as she is.
We met Theo and Emma in the Sisters of Scandal series & I’m so glad they’ve now had their story. Emma is straight talking & Theo is drawn to her & enjoys their morning rides in the park. I loved their verbal sparring & how their relationship changed & developed. The wallflower & the rake is a trope I always enjoy, this was no exception. The chemistry between the pair was there from the start, simmering away until it combusted at their first meeting in the house on Judd Street which was breath taking. I loved their insecurities & how they boosted each other so that they both grew confidence. A captivating, enthralling read, which I found very hard to put down & I look forward to the rest of the series.
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

Miss Emma Henley has decided to forgo marriage. She does not want to be for breeding and housekeeping, plus men are not faithful creatures and she wants love and fidelity. she is also known as Homely Emma Henley, her sister is very beautiful and she is not. She wants a taste of passion before she retires from society and she asks him.
Lord Theo Collington is very handsome and charming and every woman wants him. But he does not want to marry a shallow woman as most ton ladies are. His father wanted him to do manly pursuits like gambling, drinking and entertain ladies. He has become a great Rake and that is reputation. He is just bored of it all.
He likes honesty and straight talk. I love the story, the main characters are so adorable they love to tease each other and she tells him straight out if he is doing something wrong. It is a fun tale even with the sexy overtones. It is easy to read but only over eighteen bunch should read it.
I received this from the author and voluntarily reviewed it.

I really adored this one! Unique and developed characters, great dialog, an engaging plot that focused on the romance instead of overshadowing it. Perhaps it’s something about the mood I’m in, but I really felt the growth in chemistry between these two. I loved Emma’s frank and practical understanding of her appearance, with a nice dash of insecurity to give us some sweet angst! Also

Definitely a candidate for my recurring reads shelf.

"Five seasons and still unwed. Not that she had not had opportunities to marry. She had not once been tempted to accept and her own mother described her as 'not pretty enough to tempt a rake and not rich enough to tempt a fortune hunter.'" paraphrashed but it really set the story going forward.
How can I best describe this utterly delightful story? Once I began the first page, I was immersed into one of the best stories I have read this year. I could only admire Miss Emily Henley as she would not settle for less than a real marriage to someone she cared about. She was to the point of setting up her own household and luckily she had the funds, where she could pursue her true interest. Political concerns of restricting child labor and extending the vote to women and many more.
But she did enjoy her conversations with the handsome Lord Theo. Oh yes he was a libertine but their banter was so surprising and he did not want to get married anymore than she did! Little did she know his thoughts about her...
"There was something about her-some restless, passionate, driving force he sensed just beneath the surface calm-that called out to him, as compelling as physical beauty."
A slow journey of friendship and sparks of attraction that literally comes off of the pages. Julia Justiss has created such a memorable story with all the ingrediants that I adore in historical romance. I truly cannot wait for the next story in this series and know I will be revisiting this one again. Perfect.

The Awakening of Miss Henley is the first in a new series by Julia Justiss called The Cinderella Spinsters. But the hero and heroine of this story actually make their debut in The Earl’s Inconvenient Wife as secondary characters. I enjoyed this book. I have read a number of Ms. Justiss’s books and haven’t been disappointed. She is very skilled at layering her characters and then gently peeling back the outward facade they carry to expose the inner vulnerable being within. I thought Lord Theo Collington a very lovable rogue. I enjoyed his witty banter with the heroine - Emma Henley. Emma is not the typical English beauty - but extremely plain in her features, so she doubts her appeal and finds it hard to believe that romance could ever be truly experienced in her life, even when an actual suitor arrives on her doorstep. “Gentle, tender, sensual, the touch of his mouth had set off little lightning bolts of sensation that had shot to every corner of her. Just as she seemed to learn his rhythm and pressed upwards to kiss him back, he’d withdrawn. Leaving her bereft and trembling.” So why only 4 stars and not 5? My only real qualm with this book is that I kept waiting for a villain...and waiting and waiting. Maybe some unexpected twist? Or some dangerous scenario? Nope. There were quite a few passionate scenes. Overall, I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to reading the next in this series. I was given a copy of this book.

I like me a good Regency romance with a little bit of spice. However, I think spice was the main reason for this story and it barely made one jalapeno.
Miss Henley has been told that she isn't pretty enough for most of her life. Whether or not this is true, it has inhibited her enough so that she isn't planning on marrying. She doesn't really try to catch the eye of anyone during any of the seasons she attends. She has involved herself with good works and political actions, as far as a woman of her social class is allowed to. She has an inheritance that will allow her to set up her own household without a husband and she plans to do that also.
The main part of this story is the developing relationship between Miss Henley and a Lord Theo, second son and confirmed bachelor. He finds her intelligence and quick wit refreshing. She is positive he spends time with her only to mollify his parents, who do hope he will eventually marry. That being the case, she thinks he will be the perfect man to give her passionate experiences to keep her happy in her spinsterhood. What could go wrong?
It is a charming little story. There is not much new history, but the cast of characters from other recent books by the author make appearances. I recommend this addition to recent novels.

Emma Henley is a woman a head of her time. She has spunk and courage. She won't be forced to marry just to fulfill society's expectation. I liked her style. She's intelligent and avidly supports social reform. It was easy to care for her. Lord Theo is a charming, handsome rake. He spends his time with the ladies and is a sought after companion. It was interesting to watch Emma and Lord Theo form a powerful connection. This was highly unusual for an unmarried innocent to develop such a close relationship. Their liaison was very romantic. I loved this story! Both characters say they have no desire to marry, but I could see they had developed strong feelings for each other. I wanted a HEA for Emma and Theo. I just wasn't sure it was in the cards for them. I hoped that wounded pride or stubbornness wouldn't keep them apart. Julia Justiss wrote a emotional romance that kept me enthralled. I hated that to be accepted in society that they had to hide their real passions. I'm excited for the next books in The Cinderella Spinsters series.

The Awakening of Miss Henley is the first in the Cinderella Spinster series and is a great start. Three friends who have attended several years on the marriage mart have decided to eschew society and marriage to follow their own dreams. The first is Emma and Lord Theo's story. Emma has grown up being told that she is not pretty enough and would be lucky to receive an offer of marriage and has decided to avoid marriage and set up her own home. Lord Theo is a younger son with no prospects and just wants to enjoy life but when a paramour makes a public scene, he knows that he has to present a respectable front. Emma and Theo have become friends of a sort and he agrees to help her find a residence. The time they spend together leads to growing attraction and the story that follows will entertain and delight. A great beginning to a new series.

I received an advanced reader copy from the publisher but all thoughts and feelings are my own.

Gorgeous story! Emma is determined to live her life with her two friends independent of men. She has all her planning done and is ready to move on. She doesn’t believe she is beautiful enough to inspire any man to commit to her. Theo is a player. He is rich, titled and handsome. He doesn’t believe he has it in him to be married and faithful to one woman for life. They enjoy arguing with each other and find themselves battling their feelings fo each other.

The story is filled with lots of wit and snappy arguments. As these two grow closer together they find strength and courage in being close. They each have to modify their beliefs and decide what is going to make them happiest.

So good! The witty banter reminded me of Austen, and I love the way their relationship developed.

The one snag for me was and that's more due to personal preference than anything. And in fairness, I like how the author handled it,

A chance for passion.

Lord Theo Collington has just broken off with his current mistress. He spends his days in idle pursuit of gambling, drinking and social events. He enjoys his friendship with Miss Emma Henley. Banter and barbs are all in fun until the sexual tension between them leads to secret assignations. No longer is it just about passion. A fast paced romance that takes these two by surprise.

Not bad.

The story line was pretty great. I did however find myself getting bored alot. I ended up skipping pages of a bunch of descriptions because it just kept running on. Also the timeline at the end was way messed up. The season was supposed to be ending in a couple weeks then she leaves and is like 5 weeks prego when she comes back and the season is still going. And why did it take 5 weeks to get to her aunts house?

Beginning was good, but became boring very soon.

For a girl of the period the heroine was too keen to pursue an affair and her disbelief of hero was irritating. Towards end it felt like story was being dragged without any reason. Heroine was too selfish and felt like hero deserved more.

Felt no chemistry between hero and heroine and their conversations were also bland. Couldn’t believe in heroine’s interest for good works when she was that selfish.

Looks like I'm in the minority. Truly disappointed with the start of this new series. Unlike other reviewers, I was bored with a main couple I couldn't connect with, grew impatient with their rambling dialogues along with their personal reflections that seemed to repeat themselves. I kept waiting for that something more, an added spark of excitement. I had hoped it would improve the further I read, but unfortunately Emma's "awakening" simply wasn't engaging nor thrilling.

Awakening!

Superb, flirtatious, refreshing dialog with characters to match. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and could readily relate to Emma's desire to explore and participate in all aspects of life. To have Theo as her counter person placed perspective all around. I am now a follower, Julia Justiss.

Emma Henley, cruelly dubbed as “Homely Miss Henley” by society is in her fifth season and still unmarried. Truth be told, she has her own income, and has no interest in marriage, unless it’s a genuine love match. Since that outcome seems more unlikely every day, she’s determined to set up her own household, which she’ll share with her friends, while devoting her time and energy to her political activities.

Theo Collington is the younger son of a marquess, and, therefore, not the heir. His father encouraged him to live the typical rakish lifestyle enjoyed by many young gentlemen of the ton, including affairs with bored women, unfortunately, many of whom are married. When his latest mistress causes a bit of a scandal, he decides to end their alliance and take a breather before becoming involved in another relationship.

Emma and Theo are acquainted, and she caught his attention by putting him firmly in his place when he pretended to remember their previous introduction. Theo accepted her setdown graciously and with humor, and the two became friends, enjoying their banter and plain speaking. Emma knows exactly the kind of man Theo is, and has no illusions about him, or his interest in her. Still, she can’t deny how his good looks and charm cause her pulse to race, and her imagination to run wild. Theo sees beyond what others consider her plain looks to see the passion in her eyes about the causes she supports. He finds her intensity and her forthright manner extremely appealing, and he can’t help but wonder if her passion would extend to the bedroom. But she’s an innocent, and off limits to him, so he’ll have to be content to enjoy their friendship.

Their early morning rides together in the park and their amusing conversations soon have Theo and Emma becoming closer than ever, and desire is simmering below the surface though neither has openly addressed it yet. When Emma’s dream of her own home is finally about to come true, she and Theo decide to have a no-strings, limited affair. If marriage is not in her future, she’ll at least have a taste of passion, and there’s no one else she’d want to share that with.

Though they exercise discretion and caution, as can be expected, circumstances happen that seem to only be rectified by a quick marriage. Emma still holds fast to only wanting to marry for love – though she admits she’s come to love Theo, he’s made no such declaration to her. Theo comes to realize that he’s also in love, how can he convince Emma, when she believes that he’s only duty driven?

I loved watching the growth of Theo’s character, who, with Emma’s influence changed from a shallow rake to a man willing to embrace his artistic, passionate side. This required considerable courage, as it means standing up to his father, who berated his talent years ago. Theo’s care of Emma’s introduction to passion showed him to be a generous and loving man, and their intimacy was steamy and joyful. Whether in passion, or just in conversation, Emma and Theo have a connection that is rare, and one that is lovely to witness. THE AWAKENING OF MISS HENLEY is a romantic and enjoyable read, and I’ve no doubt that Emma feels beautiful in Theo’s arms, and IS beautiful to him.

First of all, I fell in love with Lord Theo. He is bright and funny and charming and very kind. Who would not fall in love with such a man? He is the youngest son of a marquess. There have been no expectations of him, and he has lived down to that idea. He hides the fact that he is not exactly who he appears to be to the world.

Emma Henley is a young women who has decided that she has spent enough time trying to be a success on the marriage mart. She has plans for her life. Although women are not allowed to vote, there are ways for her to influence some things in the world. She plans to continue to be active in causes which provide her with a purpose in life. If she is not going to have a husband and children, she can devote her time to doing what she wants with her future.

She is fortunate enough to have some money of her own which can help her support her life. She is also fortunate enough to have two friends who share her desire for lives which can do good in their world. The three of them plan to live together and be free of the strictures of the ton's expectations.

Each of these young women believe they will never marry. Each of them are idealistic enough to wish for love and marriage. Each of them are certain they must instead choose a life of good works.

Emma and Theo have known one another for a time. She has been the one young woman in the world who is apparently not in awe of his good looks and boyish charm. Emma teases and jokes with him at every opportunity. Her insults do not wound him, they make him laugh and tease her in return.

Emma is not considered a beauty by her father, her mother or most of society. She has lived in the shadow of her prettier sister. She accepts her life as a wallflower. But, when Theo looks at her, he sees her wit, her beautiful eyes, her sense of humor, her sensual mouth and her intelligence. They have wonderfully entertaining conversations with one another.

To the world, they would be considered an odd couple. But, they share a great many qualities and interests. Both of these people deserve to be seen for who they are. That is one thing they share, each of them see the truth about the other.

Ms Justiss creates wonderful characters. There is depth in everyone, whether major or minor characters. The secondary characters add texture to the story. This is part of a series and the next two Cinderella Spinsters are waiting in the wings.

Although part of a series, this book works as a stand alone read. The plot is complete in and of itself. The reader is guided in the direction of a happy ending.

There is a sense of conflict which is overcome. Basically Emma and Theo move toward futures which are not what they expected or planned but exactly what they deserve.

This reader wanted the very best for both these people. And for me that is what I hope for in any book I read.

I received this book from the author. I am voluntarily writing this review. All opinions are completely my own.
