I read this after some friends sent me on a quest in my shelves to find Scottish-themed romances. It turns out I do own a couple! So I finally read one. It was enjoyable and good for spring break.

Historically interesting 1590 on the Scottish marsh borderlands. The author did a wonderful job of explaining the details of some of the daily activities. The main character The Black Bastard- was a fair, hardened man with 4 dead wives and 7 children, and after a robbery no way to provide for them. He is a difficult man, who must control his men and not show weakness. Fortune shines upon his family when an 'Englisher' women washes ashore. Someone gave this to me as a joke Christmas present a few years ago and I read it as promised. I was curious how wide of a selection Goodreads had an put this in as a test. Ha!

This book was much less exciting after they finally hit it about the middle of the book. But I'll admit I rarely read romance novels...since I'm too busy living the romantic life for be able to compare it to much.

I loved it -- nothing about wars and history, just a story about a shipwrecked woman and the people who rescue her. Loved reading about the seven children and all her efforts to make the house more habitable. Smart cookie!! And the hero was a bit on the slow side, but came around very nicely. HORRIBLE stepbrother, who tried to ruin her life. LOvely stepfather, who tried to make up for it. As I've said many times, I read for entertainment, and this book entertained me on every page.

Shelves: romance
Nice story with a character I ended up liking, but there were many good grief moments there too, where it is just a bit too predictable. Overall a fun read, but if you have something better to read, I would do so.
