Unashamed: A Burning Passion to Share the Gospel

With contagious passion and personal authority from a lifetime's work of evangelism, Floyd McElveen motivates Christians to make evangelism their own priority. Encouraging and challenging them with his many stories, McElveen urgently communicates God's passion for soul-winning and shows how it is the calling of every Christian, regardless of his or her individual spiritual gifts. He contends that our professions of love for Jesus and love for the lost are meaningless if we put other things - even good things - first. God is not willing that any should perish. Are we?

He gives the answers to those eternal questions: Where did I come from? Why am I here? Where am I going? He gives hope to the hopeless, love to the lonely, and purpose to the puzzled. Such changed lives have a great impact on society. They are like a city on a hill that cannot be hidden.

If God and heaven are eternal, then hell is eternal too. Much as we might like to, we cannot pick and choose which parts of God’s Word we will choose to believe. When God is spurned, however, when Jesus is rejected as Lord and Savior, the gifts go back to the Giver. There is not one good thing in hell, and there never will be.

There is the secret to soul-winning!

Go when you feel like it and when you don’t.
Go by faith and not by feeling.
Go when it’s convenient and when it’s not.
Go in season and out of season.
Go when you have fished all night and caught nothing.
Go when you succeed and when you fail.
The only real reason for not reaching men and women for Jesus is a lack of deep love for Him and for the lost. It is a lack of passion for the very reason Jesus shed His blood on the cross and a lack of obedience to His clear commands.

Don’t confuse soul-winning with the broader gift of evangelism. Every Christian is commanded and commissioned by God’s Word – and by His love – to reach souls for Jesus Christ. Every Christian – shy or bold, quiet or well-spoken – is still commanded to win souls, just as every Christian is to show mercy, exercise faith, and give, even though there are those specially gifted in those areas.

One of the greatest motivations for personal evangelism comes as you begin to see God work in the lives of those with whom you have shared Christ. The true doctrine is: “Once changed by Christ, always changed by Christ.”

Nevertheless, offenses will come. They’re bound to. And if we sought to avoid them all, we would never even open our mouths. The gospel of Christ will be offensive to some, no matter how gently you present it – because the Cross itself is an offense. It’s impossible to make the message of the cross non-offensive without diluting, twisting, or otherwise misrepresenting the truth. Jesus himself was refuted, undercut, mocked, rejected, and eventually crucified – and it certainly wasn’t because of any mistakes He made in witnessing.

Salvation depends upon their heart, not their words – what they understand about themselves and the shed blood of Jesus Christ when they call on Him to save them. This only happens as the Holy Spirit acts through the Word of God on their heart. It is not intellect that wins souls.

Once you lead a man or woman to Christ and see his or her face begin to shine with His love, encourage your new convert to begin telling the story to others, while the fire of new joy is blazing hot. Revel in the love of Jesus, and let Him love lost souls to salvation through you. Other than being saved yourself, knowing and loving, and being loved by Jesus, there is no greater joy in this world than that of showing another lost soul the only way home. Don’t miss it.

Faith is not just a head belief but a heart belief. It is not simply believing in a historical fact, like George Washing crossing Delaware, or believing that Christ was crucified. Faith is a commitment to a Person; it is a total surrendering of your body, heart, and mind to Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.

Faith is the root, and feeling is the fruit, of trusting Christ.
