This is one volume of the Oxford History of Music series. It covers just 40 years of music history, but it is a very long and detailed book. I learned ever so much from it, and in the process I discovered new composers I had never heard of before--and thanks to Youtube, I have now heard many of the works written in those years. It's been a great experience reading this. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Everything you'd ever want to know!
