White writes about the land, the people, the history, and the seasons. His descriptions of life "today" in the Adirondacks are quaintly out of date and even the addendum describes events that took place decades ago. It is equal parts reality and romance, a pleasant read about a great area of upstate New York.

This is one of my favorite books - our copy is tattered but loved. My husband and I read and reread sections frequently.

My favorite section deals with description of the area month-by-month.
